Let the candle wax harden, gently lift away the excess, then—if the tablecloth’s care label allows heat—press the stain between clean absorbent paper with a warm iron. Treat any remaining mark according to the care label, and check the cloth before drying.
Before you start: check the care label
Read the tablecloth’s care label before ironing or washing. There is no single safe iron setting for every fabric, finish, dye, or weave. If the cloth is delicate, valuable, heat-sensitive, or marked dry-clean-only, do not use a general household ironing method; ask a professional cleaner for advice. The Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute’s guidance and Samsung’s table-linen guidance both make fabric-care restrictions relevant to the treatment.

Remove candle wax from a tablecloth
- Let the wax harden. Avoid wiping or rubbing it while soft, since that can spread it. Let it dry, or use ice to help it set sooner, as Persil’s wax-removal guidance suggests.
- Lift off the surface wax. Use a spoon, dull knife, or plastic card to ease hardened wax from the fabric. Work gently to avoid cutting or snagging the cloth. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension advises careful scraping, and the Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute recommends removing wax buildup before applying heat.
- Transfer embedded wax with paper and a warm iron, if heat is safe. Place the stained area between layers of clean absorbent paper, such as paper towels. Press with a warm iron on a low, fabric-safe setting, following the care label; the cited guidance does not specify one temperature suitable for all tablecloths. Replace the paper whenever it absorbs wax so the wax does not transfer back. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension advises pressing from the back of the fabric and rotating the towel as it absorbs wax.
- Treat any remaining mark and wash only as permitted. Apply detergent to residue and launder according to the care label. Use the warmest water the label allows, not a temperature chosen on the assumption that all fabrics tolerate the same treatment. Samsung also recommends allowing detergent pre-treatment to sit before washing in its general table-linen guidance.
- Inspect before drying. If wax or a mark remains, repeat a suitable treatment before machine drying. Drying with a stain still present can make it harder to remove.
If colored wax leaves a mark
Removing the wax may not remove its dye: color can remain after the wax itself has transferred to the paper. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension describes diluted rubbing alcohol for dye residue, followed by rinsing, and says bleach should be used only when safe for the fabric. Test any treatment in an inconspicuous spot, follow the care label, and avoid experimenting with chemicals on delicate or valuable cloth.

When to stop and call a cleaner
Follow the care label for dry-clean-only tablecloths rather than machine washing them. If a mark persists after appropriate home treatment—or if the fabric cannot safely tolerate the heat or cleaning method—take the tablecloth to a professional cleaner. The methods above are not guaranteed for every textile construction or finish.
