Trane Furnace Troubleshooting: Safe Checks for Common Problems

Check thermostat settings, furnace power, and the air filter first. Leave ignition, gas, electrical, and lockout repairs to a qualified HVAC professional.

If your Trane furnace will not start, blows cool air, cycles repeatedly, or enters lockout, begin with the thermostat, power, and air filter. These homeowner checks can resolve simple issues; ignition, gas, electrical, venting, and safety-control faults require a qualified HVAC technician. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds or you smell strong, persistent gas, leave the home and call for emergency help from outside.

Before troubleshooting: know when to leave

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds

Go outside to fresh air immediately, call emergency services, and do not reenter until responders say it is safe. Do not use the furnace again until trained personnel have inspected it. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says, “Never ignore an alarming CO alarm!” CPSC carbon monoxide questions and answers.

If you smell gas

A strong, persistent gas odor is a reason to leave immediately. Do not operate switches or try to find the leak while inside. Once you are at a safe location, contact emergency services and follow their instructions. Trane’s furnace troubleshooting guidance.

Start with three homeowner checks

  1. Thermostat: Set the mode to Heat and raise the setpoint above the room temperature. If the thermostat uses batteries, check them and replace them if needed. For a furnace that runs but does not heat, set the fan to Auto rather than On.
  2. Power: Check that the furnace switch is on and inspect the home’s circuit breaker. If the breaker trips again, do not keep resetting it; arrange professional service.
  3. Air filter and airflow: Check whether the filter is dirty and whether return-air vents are blocked. If replacing the filter, use the size and type specified for your furnace or shown on the existing filter. Trane describes 30–90 days (about 1–3 months) as a typical filter replacement range, with the interval varying by filter quality and conditions; it is not a universal schedule. Trane filter guidance.

Furnace error codes, filter dimensions, and compatible parts vary by model. Use the owner’s manual for your unit and the thermostat manual for thermostat codes; do not infer a diagnosis from a general code list.

Trane FLRQB5AH23M11 MERV 11 QuikBox Filter 22.7"x20"x4.70" 2-Pack
  • Important Note: Qty on the Envoriwise box says 1 but it means 1 pack of 2. The label also does not have the complete size on the outer box and is printed as 22.7x20x4.7 , but it is printed correctly as 22.7x20.7x4.7 on the air filter.

If the furnace will not turn on

Check the thermostat mode and setpoint, batteries if applicable, furnace switch, and circuit breaker. If the furnace remains off after those checks—or the breaker trips again—contact an HVAC professional rather than opening the unit or attempting electrical repairs. Trane guidance for a furnace that will not turn on.

If it clicks or tries to ignite but does not light

Thermostat settings, power, a dirty filter, or gas supply can be involved, but clicking or repeated ignition attempts can also point to a fault that needs diagnosis. Trane describes the flame sensor as “a safety device that detects a flame”: when it does not detect flame, it signals the control board to stop gas flow. Do not attempt to clean or replace the ignitor or flame sensor based on a general troubleshooting guide. Have a qualified technician inspect ignition and gas-related faults. If the furnace runs but blows cool air

Confirm that the thermostat is set to Heat and that its fan setting is Auto, not On; the On setting can circulate air even when the furnace is not heating. Inspect the filter and replace it if dirty, using the correct size and type. If the furnace still blows cool air, a technician may need to assess airflow, ignition, flame sensing, or another system fault. Trane guidance for a furnace not blowing hot air.

If it starts and stops repeatedly or enters lockout

A restricted filter or airflow problem can contribute to overheating and shutdown. Repeated cycling or lockout can also involve ignition, fuel, venting, burners, controls, or safety switches. Replace a dirty filter if appropriate, but do not repeatedly reset the furnace or bypass a safety control. A hard lockout needs professional diagnosis and repair; contact an HVAC technician if the problem continues. Trane lockout guidance and Trane short-cycling guidance.

If the blower behaves oddly

A fan setting of On can keep the blower running without heat; switching it to Auto is a reasonable first check. Also inspect the filter and make sure return vents are not blocked. If the blower still behaves abnormally or the furnace cycles repeatedly, have a professional check for a switch, motor, control-board, or other fault rather than attempting component repairs. Preventive safety and maintenance

  • Install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. CPSC advises using alarms with battery backup or battery power and testing them monthly. Follow the alarm manufacturer’s placement and operating instructions. CPSC carbon monoxide alarm guidance.
  • Have heating systems, including vents, inspected and serviced annually by a trained technician, as CPSC recommends. CPSC heating-system service guidance.
  • Use the furnace manual for model-specific filter and maintenance requirements; a general replacement interval cannot account for every filter, home, or operating condition.
