Researchers reported four vulnerabilities in one specific TP-Link Tapo L530E setup: hardware version 1.0.0, firmware 1.1.9, and Tapo app 2.8.14. Their attack scenarios involved conditions such as a nearby attacker and interaction with the local Wi-Fi; the study does not show that an arbitrary remote attacker could compromise any household. TP-Link later published affected-version information and fixes. If you own a potentially affected bulb, check its hardware revision and region, then apply the update TP-Link lists for that exact device.

What the Tapo bulb study found

In a 2023 paper presented at the 20th International Conference on Security and Cryptography, Davide Bonaventura, Sergio Esposito, and Giampaolo Bella reported a security assessment of a Tapo L530E smart bulb. Their test setup used bulb hardware v1.0.0 with firmware 1.1.9, a Wi-Fi switch, and a Samsung phone running Android 11 with Tapo app 2.8.14. The authors said they disclosed the findings to TP-Link through its vulnerability reporting program.

The paper identified four issues and assigned severity scores under CVSS v3.1. These are findings about the tested setup, not a count of active attacks or affected homes.

Issue reported by the paper Severity Score
Lack of authentication between the bulb and the Tapo app High 8.8
A short, hard-coded shared secret High 7.6
Weakness involving predictable or static initialization vectors Medium Not stated by the paper
No freshness check for received messages, permitting replay Medium Not stated by the paper

The paper describes potential exposure of Tapo credentials and a Wi-Fi password, as well as possible effects on other devices associated with the same Tapo account. These are consequences in the researchers’ scenarios, not evidence that credentials were stolen or devices were compromised in real homes.

Could an attacker reach your household through the bulb?

The study does not establish a universal remote attack. SecurityWeek’s account of the work describes proximity and local-network conditions. One credential-exposure path involved the bulb being in setup mode. Another scenario considered a configured bulb, Wi-Fi deauthentication, and a user resetting the bulb. The conditions matter: the findings should not be read as showing that simply connecting a bulb to Wi-Fi gives an attacker anywhere on the internet access to a household.

The National Vulnerability Database’s CVE-2023-38906 entry describes sensitive-information exposure through an authentication code for UDP messages and lists affected Tapo product and app versions. TP-Link’s advisory associates the disclosure with CVE-2023-38906, CVE-2023-38908, and CVE-2023-38909. The paper reports four issues, so the CVE-2023-38906 record alone is not a complete account of all four.

Which Tapo versions did TP-Link identify as affected?

TP-Link Italia’s advisory, updated October 24, 2023, identifies Tapo L530 variants including L530B and L530E with firmware 1.0.x or earlier, and Tapo app versions 2.17.x or earlier, as affected. The advisory lists released fixes, but the firmware version depends on the bulb’s region and hardware revision:

Device or software listed by TP-Link Fixed version stated in the advisory
L530 EU/US V1 firmware 1.3.0 or later
Certain L530 V2/V3 variants 1.1.0 or later
Tapo app 2.18.x or later

Those version numbers are not interchangeable across every L530 bulb. Consult the advisory’s device table and update guidance for your exact model, hardware revision, and region; do not assume a firmware number listed for one variant applies to another. If your bulb or region is not covered by the table, use TP-Link support or download information for that specific revision.

How to check and update your bulb

  1. Check the bulb’s identity. In the Tapo app, open the bulb’s device page and its device settings or device information to confirm the model, hardware version, and installed firmware. App labels can vary by version; use TP-Link’s guidance for the device if you cannot find these details.
  2. Compare the details with TP-Link’s advisory. Match the model, hardware revision, and region to the corresponding affected and fixed versions rather than relying on the L530 name alone.
  3. Install the applicable bulb firmware update. Follow the update route shown in the Tapo app and TP-Link’s instructions for that exact revision.
  4. Update the Tapo app. Install the latest available version from the relevant app store; TP-Link’s advisory lists app 2.18.x or later as fixed.
  5. Seek model-specific guidance if there is no matching entry. Contact TP-Link support or use its support/download information for your precise hardware revision and region.

TP-Link says in its advisory that the vulnerabilities persist if recommended updates are not performed. The advisory is in Italian and was updated October 24, 2023; use the vendor’s regional support information if your device differs from the variants it lists.

What the evidence does not tell owners

  • The study did not test every Tapo bulb, later L530 hardware revisions, or current firmware.
  • It did not establish how many households were affected or document exploitation in the wild.
  • It does not support a claim that every TP-Link smart bulb is vulnerable, or that a different brand is safer.
  • Replacing the bulb or changing router settings is not established by these sources as a fix; the vendor’s specific firmware and app updates are the supported actions.

TP-Link’s Product Security Trust Center describes a process covering acknowledgment, triage, product and version assessment, remediation planning, and publication of advisories and fixes. The page says triage aims for a response within five working days and remediation may take up to 90 days or longer; these are descriptions of the vendor’s process, not guaranteed timelines for an individual report.
