The best no-monthly-fee security system depends on what you mean by “security.” For door and window protection, SimpliSafe is the strongest alarm-first compromise. For smart-home flexibility, consider abode. Ring Alarm is a practical choice for Alexa households, while eufy and Reolink are better fits when local video storage matters more than a conventional alarm. Advanced users can build a low-recurring-cost system with Home Assistant.
This guide reflects current 2026 product and plan information. Prices, included features, and free-tier limitations can change, so verify the exact model and plan before buying.

What “self-monitored” really means
Self-monitoring means the system sends alerts to you rather than to a professional monitoring center. You decide whether to contact police, fire services, medical assistance, or a neighbor.
The system does not guarantee emergency response. You are responsible for keeping the hub powered, connected, armed, updated, and able to notify you. If your phone is muted, the internet is down, or you are asleep or traveling, an alert may not receive immediate attention.

Best alarm-first systems
SimpliSafe: best conventional alarm compromise
SimpliSafe is the clearest fit for homeowners who want a recognizable alarm layout without immediately paying for professional monitoring. A typical installation uses a base station, keypad, door and window sensors, motion sensors, and an audible siren. The system can later be expanded with devices such as smoke, carbon-monoxide, flood, freeze, glass-break, and additional motion sensors.
Its main advantage is flexibility: comparison coverage identifies free self-monitoring and the ability to move to optional professional monitoring. However, verify the current rules for app control, camera live view, recording, smart alerts, and cellular backup. A system may support those functions technically while reserving them for a paid plan.
Choose it if: you want entry sensors and alarm modes first, with the option of adding professional monitoring later.
Do not choose it solely because: a free tier is advertised. Confirm exactly what remains available at $0 per month.
Ring Alarm: best for Ring and Alexa households
Ring Alarm provides a broad sensor and camera ecosystem with a relatively low equipment entry point. Ring’s U.S. store has displayed promotional prices of $199.99 for a five-piece kit, $249.99 for an eight-piece kit, $329.99 for a fourteen-piece kit, and $299.99 for an Alarm Pro eight-piece kit. These are price signals seen on the store and may change.
Ring’s current plan page lists Solo at $4.99 per month, Multi at $9.99, Pro at $19.99, and Virtual Security Guard at $99. The Pro plan includes professional monitoring, while cellular backup is listed among paid-plan features. Check Ring’s current plan details before purchase.

Ring can perform core alarm functions without a paid plan, but video history, advanced alerts, cellular backup, and professional monitoring are not interchangeable features. Alarm Pro also combines the alarm with an eero Wi-Fi 6 router and backup-internet capabilities when the relevant hardware and plan are used.
Choose it if: you already use Alexa or Ring and want to begin with an alarm system without committing to monitoring.
Main trade-off: the most resilient and feature-rich configuration is cloud- and plan-dependent.
abode: best for smart-home flexibility
abode combines alarm sensors with a broader smart-home orientation. It is a strong candidate for users who want automations, compatible locks, lights, cameras, and voice-assistant integrations alongside intrusion detection.
Because capabilities vary by hub and device, verify whether remote arming, notifications, camera recording, cellular backup, and automations remain available without a subscription. Also check compatibility by model rather than assuming every abode product supports HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter in the same way.
Choose it if: you want an alarm platform that can become part of a larger smart home.
Main trade-off: it requires more compatibility research than a tightly packaged alarm kit.

Best camera-first and local-storage options
eufy Security: best local-storage direction for many households
eufy is primarily attractive to readers who want cameras and doorbells with local-storage options, often using a HomeBase hub. Local recording can reduce recurring cloud costs and provide a more direct alternative to subscription-only video history.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not generalize across the entire eufy range. Storage, detection, encryption, remote access, and subscription requirements differ by product. Check the specific camera and HomeBase compatibility information. Comparison coverage also identifies a major limitation: cellular backup is generally not available in the relevant self-monitored configuration.
eufy is better described as a local-storage camera and security ecosystem than as a replacement for a professionally monitored alarm system.
Reolink: best for wired or PoE video
Reolink is a strong choice for homeowners who prioritize reliable local video, wired cameras, Power over Ethernet, and NVR recording. It is particularly suitable for larger properties where Wi-Fi cameras would be difficult to position reliably.
The trade-off is installation. You may need Ethernet cable, a PoE switch or NVR, storage, mounts, and network configuration. Reolink is camera-first rather than a conventional alarm platform, and cited comparison coverage does not identify a professional monitoring option.

Aqara: best for sensor-heavy smart homes
Aqara’s compact sensors and hubs can work well in Apple Home-oriented homes and in automations involving doors, motion, water, temperature, and other conditions. It is more customizable than a typical alarm starter kit.

- Enhanced motion detection with Outdoor 4 — With Outdoor 4, enjoy a wider field of view and be alerted to motion faster with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
Compatibility depends on the hub, firmware, region, and smart-home ecosystem. HomeKit or Matter support does not automatically provide professional alarm monitoring. Aqara is best for users willing to plan the system rather than simply install a packaged alarm.
Wyze: best for a low-cost starting point
Wyze can provide inexpensive cameras and sensors, but the free experience may omit cloud recording, AI detection, or other features available through paid services. Compare the total cost of several cameras and the desired cloud plan rather than judging only the equipment price.

Advanced DIY: Home Assistant
Experienced users can combine Home Assistant with compatible sensors, cameras, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter devices, local storage, a UPS, and an alarm automation such as Alarmo. This can minimize recurring costs and provide powerful local automations.
It also creates responsibility for networking, backups, firmware, updates, account security, integrations, and troubleshooting. Home Assistant is not a substitute for professional monitoring unless you separately arrange a service that provides it. It is best for technically capable homeowners who value control more than turnkey support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Alarm-first versus camera-first
An alarm-first system uses a hub, keypad, entry sensors, motion sensors, and a siren. It is better at detecting a door or window opening even when no camera has a clear view. It also makes arming the whole home and configuring entry delays more straightforward.
A camera-first system provides visual verification and may offer better resolution and local recording. But cameras can miss events because of blind spots, lighting, motion zones, obstructions, network failures, or charging. A camera notification is not the same as a dedicated alarm event.

What happens during outages?
Ask five separate questions:
- Will the siren operate from the hub’s battery?
- Will the hub communicate over cellular service?
- Will the router and network switch remain powered?
- Will cameras continue recording locally?
- Will you receive an alert if broadband is unavailable?
A battery-backed hub is not the same as cellular backup. A camera system connected to an unpowered router may stop working even if an alarm hub remains active. For outage-prone homes, consider a UPS for the router, access points, switches, and NVR, along with a system that explicitly supports cellular alarm communication.
Local storage: benefits and limitations
Local storage may mean a microSD card, a hub, an NVR, or network-attached storage. Confirm which one the exact product uses, whether storage must be purchased separately, how footage is overwritten, and whether remote playback still requires internet access.
Local recording reduces cloud dependence but is not automatically safer. A thief can steal a camera or recorder, an attacker can damage the hub, and the homeowner must manage storage and firmware security. Place critical recording equipment somewhere less accessible and enable two-factor authentication on accounts that control remote access.

- Automatic dispatch: you, not a monitoring center, decide what to do with an alert.
- Human verification: no operator may assess whether an event appears genuine.
- Cellular backup: alarm communication may depend on broadband or a paid plan.
- Video history: live view may remain available while recorded footage requires a subscription.
- Advanced detection: person, package, vehicle, or other AI alerts may be plan-dependent.
- Replacement and support benefits: paid plans may include warranties or equipment benefits not available at $0.
Cost-of-ownership examples
Small apartment: start with a hub, keypad, two entry sensors, a motion sensor, and—if permitted—a camera. Favor peel-and-stick installation, local siren control, and equipment that can move with you. Check lease rules for exterior cameras and shared-hallway recording.
Three-bedroom home: cover every accessible exterior door and vulnerable window, then add motion sensors, a siren, a doorbell, and cameras for verification. Separate the equipment cost from optional monitoring, cloud recording, cellular backup, storage cards, and replacement batteries.
Large or outage-prone property: consider alarm sensors with repeaters, multiple keypads, smoke, carbon-monoxide, water and freeze sensors, wired or PoE cameras, an NVR, UPS protection, and cellular backup. This costs more upfront but avoids relying on one Wi-Fi access point or one battery camera.
Installation and reliability checklist
- Place the alarm hub centrally and within reliable communication range.
- Install entry sensors on every accessible exterior door and window.
- Test every sensor, siren, and notification after installation.
- Lock your phone and test alerts with sound muted and notifications restricted.
- Simulate both a power outage and an internet outage.
- Back up the router and networking equipment where appropriate.
- Enable two-factor authentication and remove unused household accounts.
- Replace or recharge batteries on a schedule.
- Use certified smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms; do not treat a camera or listener as an automatic substitute.
- Review local fire, building, lease, and privacy requirements before installation.
How to choose
Choose SimpliSafe if your priority is a conventional alarm that can begin with self-monitoring and later add professional monitoring. Choose abode if smart-home integrations are central. Choose Ring Alarm if you already use Ring or Alexa and accept that several resilience and video features are plan-dependent. Choose eufy for a local-storage camera direction, Reolink for wired or PoE video, and Aqara for sensor-rich smart-home automation. Choose Home Assistant only if you are comfortable maintaining the system yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a self-monitored system call the police automatically?
Not merely because it has an alarm or app alert. Automatic dispatch generally requires an active professional-monitoring service, and the provider’s plan and local procedures determine how incidents are handled.
Is local video storage the same as a no-subscription alarm?
No. Local storage can avoid recurring cloud-video fees, but it does not automatically provide entry sensors, a central siren, cellular backup, or professional emergency response.
Does a battery-backed hub keep the entire system working during an outage?
No. The hub may remain powered while the router, Wi-Fi access points, cameras, switches, or NVR shut down. Test each component separately.
