Top 5 Home Assistant Cameras: Your Best Smart Home Picks

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Reolink CX410 is the best overall camera for most Home Assistant users because it combines an officially authorized integration, local operation, useful detection entities, and flexible stream options. For a wired Frigate installation, choose the Amcrest IP5M-T1179EW-AI-V3. The Reolink E1 Pro is the simpler indoor choice, the TP-Link Tapo C120 is the budget option only after verifying local-stream support, and the Ubiquiti UniFi G5 Pro is best for households already invested in UniFi Protect.

“Works with Home Assistant” does not describe one universal feature level. A camera may offer a polished vendor integration, ONVIF video, an RTSP stream only, or access through Frigate, an NVR, or a hub. The right choice depends on local access, stream reliability, networking, recording, detection, and privacy—not resolution alone.

1. Reolink CX410: best overall Home Assistant camera

The CX410 is the safest all-round recommendation for a Home Assistant household. Home Assistant’s official Reolink integration is vendor-authorized, operates locally, and lists the CX410 among models tested with direct connections.

Depending on the camera, the integration can provide live streams, snapshots, motion, visitor detection, and AI-related entities such as person, vehicle, bicycle, pet, and animal detection. That is substantially more useful than adding a generic camera entity that only displays video.

Why choose it

  • Shorter setup path than manually building RTSP or ONVIF configurations.
  • Local operation without requiring a cloud subscription or account for basic camera access.
  • Useful vendor-generated events exposed as Home Assistant entities where supported.
  • Flexible stream options, including RTSP and other documented protocols.
  • Suitable for dashboards, notifications, and local automations.

Reolink documents that internet access can be blocked while the Home Assistant integration and Reolink app or client continue to operate. That makes the CX410 particularly attractive for privacy-conscious installations.

Important limitations

Do not generalize CX410 support to every Reolink product. Compatibility is model-specific. Some models connect through a Reolink NVR or Home Hub rather than directly, while LTE models are listed as incompatible with the direct Reolink integration. Check the exact model in the current Home Assistant documentation before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reolink also warns that running its integration alongside ONVIF or third-party software such as Frigate, Blue Iris, or Scrypted can cause connection drops in some configurations. Start with one connection method and add only what you need.

Verdict: Choose the CX410 if you want the easiest route to a local Home Assistant camera with rich entities. Choose a PoE Amcrest instead if wired reliability and a multi-camera Frigate system matter more than simplified setup.

2. Amcrest IP5M-T1179EW-AI-V3: best PoE and Frigate value

The Amcrest IP5M-T1179EW-AI-V3 is a practical choice for a permanent, local-first surveillance system. It is a 5MP PoE turret camera with a 2.8mm lens, IP67 weather resistance, advertised night vision up to 98 feet, and microSD recording up to 256GB according to its official product listing.

Its conventional IP-camera design fits the workflow Home Assistant and Frigate users often want: Ethernet networking, one cable for power and data, RTSP video, ONVIF-oriented compatibility, and a camera that can remain available for continuous recording. Frigate’s documentation identifies Amcrest as a fallback recommendation for suitable camera hardware and discusses relevant ONVIF support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why PoE matters

  • Power and network traffic use one Ethernet cable.
  • Wired video avoids Wi-Fi congestion and signal fluctuations.
  • PoE is easier to scale consistently across several cameras.
  • Continuous recording does not depend on a battery or wireless link.

The trade-off is installation complexity. You need Ethernet cabling plus a PoE switch or injector, and you will likely spend more time configuring camera accounts, stream profiles, codecs, and recording retention than you would with a consumer Wi-Fi camera.

WYZE Cam Pan v3, Indoor/Outdoor Security Camera with 360° Pan/Tilt/Zoom | Vibrant Color Night Vision, IP65-Rated, Easy Setup, 360° Pan Scan and 2-Way Audio for Home Security, Baby Monitoring and Pets
  • 【Full 1080p HD Clarity with Pan Scan Auto Patrol】- Experience crystal-clear video with 360° pan and 180° tilt coverage—ideal for use as a reliable indoor camera or outdoor security camera. Set up to 4 custom waypoints for automated room monitoring, ensuring you never miss a detail. (Not 5G compatible.)
  • 【Stunning Color Night Vision for Low-Light Environments】- See vivid details even in darkness with advanced color night vision. Perfect for monitoring dimly lit driveways, backyards, or nurseries—day or night.
  • 【AI-Powered Motion Tracking for Pets & People】- This versatile pet camera automatically detects and follows movement—whether it’s your dog, kids, or visitors. Get real-time alerts and enjoy smooth, accurate tracking.
  • 【True Outdoor Durability with IP65 Rating】- Built to resist rain, heat, and cold, this outdoor camera delivers unwavering performance in any season (Outdoor Power Adapter required).
  • 【Clear Two-Way Talk with Enhanced Audio】- Communicate with clarity through the built-in microphone and speaker. Perfect for reassuring pets, greeting guests, or issuing warnings.

Amcrest exposes many configuration choices. That flexibility is useful for Frigate, but the exact AI-V3 firmware and model variant matter; do not treat older IP5M-T1179 versions as identical.

Verdict: Select the Amcrest for a wired, scalable Home Assistant and Frigate installation where reliability and local recording outweigh plug-and-play convenience.

3. Reolink E1 Pro: best indoor camera for easy setup

The Reolink E1 Pro is the indoor counterpart to the CX410 recommendation. Home Assistant lists it among Reolink models tested for direct connection, so it benefits from the same official integration path: automatic discovery where available, local credentials, camera entities, and supported event sensors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It suits rooms, offices, apartments, nurseries, and pet monitoring where running Ethernet is inconvenient. A renter can place it near power and use Wi-Fi without building a PoE installation.

What to consider indoors

  • Wi-Fi interference and congestion can affect live video and recording.
  • Pan/tilt is not a guarantee that equivalent PTZ controls will appear in Home Assistant.
  • Check the exact hardware revision and firmware for privacy shutter, microphone, and two-way-audio behavior.
  • Verify the available main stream and substream before configuring Frigate.

The E1 Pro is not the best substitute for a fixed outdoor camera or a wired multi-camera system. For Frigate, confirm its encoding and substream behavior rather than assuming every Reolink product has identical stream capabilities.

Verdict: Buy the E1 Pro when you want Reolink’s Home Assistant support in an indoor, Wi-Fi-friendly package.

4. TP-Link Tapo C120: best low-cost option, with a compatibility warning

The Tapo C120 is appealing when the main goal is inexpensive 2K indoor/outdoor coverage. TP-Link’s official materials describe a 120-degree field of view and Wi-Fi connectivity, and the official US store showed a $33.99 sale signal against a $44.99 comparison price during the research period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, the available product information does not establish a universal, current RTSP/ONVIF guarantee for every C120 hardware or firmware revision. Do not assume that because the camera works in the Tapo app it will provide the local stream and events required by Home Assistant or Frigate.

The security camera is also easy to set up, just follow the detailed instructions on the app. Make sure the pet camera is connected to Wifi within a 3 feet range.

Check before purchase

  1. Confirm the exact C120 model and hardware revision.
  2. Check current firmware documentation for RTSP and ONVIF support.
  3. Verify whether local streaming requires enabling a separate account or setting.
  4. Confirm that the intended Frigate host supports the camera’s codec and stream profiles.
  5. Buy from a seller with a practical return policy if local-NVR support is essential.

The C120 can be a sensible budget monitor for basic coverage, especially when Wi-Fi installation is more important than engineered 24/7 recording. It is a weaker choice for a Frigate-first system unless the exact local-stream behavior has been confirmed.

Battery-powered Tapo models should be evaluated separately. Low-power cameras commonly sleep between events and may not support continuous RTSP, ONVIF, or 24/7 recording.

Verdict: The C120 is the budget pick only after you verify local-stream compatibility for your exact camera and software stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Ubiquiti UniFi G5 Pro: best premium ecosystem camera

The UniFi G5 Pro is a premium 4K indoor/outdoor PoE camera with 3× optical zoom and long-range infrared night vision. Ubiquiti’s official US store listed it at $379 during the research period.

Its strongest case is not that it is the cheapest way to put a camera on a Home Assistant dashboard. It is that an existing UniFi household may already have the networking, console, storage, and management environment needed to run UniFi Protect smoothly.

Why existing UniFi users may prefer it

  • PoE provides a stable wired connection.
  • Optical zoom can help frame distant areas without relying only on digital cropping.
  • UniFi Protect offers a centralized surveillance ecosystem.
  • Premium hardware may make sense for larger or more permanent installations.

Evaluate the total cost, not just the camera. A Protect-compatible console or NVR, storage, PoE hardware, and optional accessories may be necessary. The official page also listed an optional long-range IR LED or floodlight enhancer at $99 and UI Care at $69 per unit during the research period.

Home Assistant access is not the same as managing the entire camera through Home Assistant. Confirm current UniFi Protect integration capabilities and limitations for recordings, events, audio, and PTZ before committing to the ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The G5 Pro is the premium choice for an established UniFi Protect installation, but poor value for a single inexpensive Home Assistant dashboard camera.

What “works with Home Assistant” actually means

Home Assistant’s Camera integration is a building block supplied by other integrations; it is not a universal recorder that automatically supports every camera.

Official vendor integration

An official integration is usually the cleanest route and may expose streams, motion, AI detections, snapshots, audio, and controls. Reolink is the strongest example in this group. Follow the documented model list rather than assuming brand-wide compatibility.

ONVIF

Home Assistant’s ONVIF integration supports ONVIF Profile S devices and requires the FFmpeg integration. Discovery may be automatic, but a separate camera user is recommended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ONVIF is not full feature parity. A device may expose video but not events; PTZ, audio, profiles, and motion behavior vary by firmware. Some cameras also require a distinct ONVIF service port.

RTSP and Generic Camera

If a camera provides a stable RTSP stream but lacks a rich integration, Home Assistant’s Generic Camera can provide live video. An RTSP address generally follows this pattern:

rtsp://user:password@CAMERA_IP:554/STREAM_PATH

The stream path is model-specific. Use the manufacturer’s documentation or a verified configuration; there is no universal path. This approach normally gives you video, not motion or object-detection entities. A local AI system such as Frigate can supply those events.

Frigate

Frigate’s Home Assistant integration adds local recording, detections, zones, events, and event-driven automation. It requires RTSP accessibility for live streams, and Frigate’s go2rtc restream uses port 8554 by default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frigate recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility. Multiple substreams let detection, live viewing, and recording use different resolutions, reducing unnecessary re-encoding. A sensible architecture is:

How to add a camera to Home Assistant

For Reolink’s official integration

  1. Open Settings → Devices & services.
  2. Select Add Integration.
  3. Search for Reolink.
  4. Follow the setup prompts.
  5. If manual setup is required, enter the camera’s local IP address and its device username and password—not the Reolink cloud-account credentials.

Reolink devices are normally discovered automatically. If discovery fails, confirm network reachability, locate the camera’s current IP address, check whether the model requires an NVR or Home Hub, and verify that it is not an incompatible LTE model.

For ONVIF

  1. Configure the FFmpeg integration.
  2. Go to Settings → Devices & services → Add Integration.
  3. Search for ONVIF.
  4. Use discovery or enter the camera details manually.
  5. Use a dedicated, least-privilege camera account.

Home Assistant may enable only the first H.264 profile as a camera entity by default. Additional profiles and device features may require model-specific configuration.

For RTSP, Generic Camera, or Frigate

Enable local streaming in the camera’s settings, create a dedicated account, reserve the camera’s IP address in your router, and test the stream from the same network as the Home Assistant or Frigate host. If using Frigate, configure a main stream for recording and a lower-resolution substream for detection where available.

How to choose

  • Easiest overall setup: Reolink CX410.
  • Easy indoor installation: Reolink E1 Pro.
  • Wired reliability and Frigate: Amcrest IP5M-T1179EW-AI-V3.
  • Lowest initial cost: Tapo C120, after confirming RTSP/ONVIF behavior.
  • Existing UniFi network and Protect system: UniFi G5 Pro.
  • Battery operation: Treat it as a separate category and verify hub, NVR, streaming, and recording limitations for the exact model.

What to check before buying

  • Exact model number, hardware revision, and firmware.
  • Whether it connects directly or requires an NVR or hub.
  • Stable local RTSP access and the documented stream path.
  • ONVIF Profile S support if you need ONVIF.
  • H.264 availability and AAC audio compatibility.
  • Main and low-resolution substreams for Frigate.
  • PoE versus Wi-Fi requirements.
  • MicroSD, NVR, NAS, Frigate, and cloud recording options.
  • Whether AI detections run on the camera, locally, or in the cloud.
  • Microphone, speaker, privacy-shutter, and PTZ behavior through the intended integration.
  • Local operation after internet access is blocked.
  • Return policy and compatibility with your Home Assistant or Frigate host.

Common mistakes and failure modes

Confusing app support with local support

Compatibility with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, or a vendor mobile app does not prove that Home Assistant can access local video. Confirm the actual integration, RTSP, ONVIF, or Frigate route.

Using resolution as the ranking system

A stable 5MP wired camera with an H.264 substream may be more useful for Frigate than a higher-resolution Wi-Fi camera that drops connections or requires transcoding. Low-light performance, lens angle, bitrate, placement, and storage matter just as much.

Assuming every feature transfers

Vendor-app PTZ, two-way audio, motion events, and AI labels may not appear in Home Assistant or Frigate. Verify each feature through the specific integration you plan to use.

Ignoring codecs

Reolink documents RTSP support for 4K H.265 where supported, while RTMP and FLV do not support that mode. H.265 can reduce bandwidth but may create compatibility or transcoding problems. Prefer H.264 unless H.265 support is verified across your complete pipeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding every integration at once

Using the vendor integration, ONVIF, Generic Camera, Frigate, Scrypted, and an NVR simultaneously can duplicate entities, increase bandwidth, and contribute to dropped streams. Establish one stable path first.

Exposing cameras to the public internet

Do not forward RTSP ports directly to the internet. Use a secure Home Assistant remote-access method or VPN, isolate cameras on a VLAN where practical, reserve their IP addresses, and limit outbound internet access according to the features you actually need.
