The Dayton Audio MKBoom is the best first choice if you want the most complete DIY Bluetooth speaker project. It includes the cabinet, drivers, crossover boards, amplifier, controls, battery board, and power supply—although the version without batteries still requires compatible cells. For a rugged workshop build, choose the 60W ammo-box kit. If you already have an enclosure, the 30W speaker package is the better fit.
These products are not identical. The MKBoom is a near-complete speaker kit, the ammo-box and 30W products are component packages, and the KABD-250, KABD-430, and KABD-4100 are electronics platforms for custom designs. That distinction matters more than the advertised wattage.

What counts as a DIY Bluetooth speaker kit?
There are three useful categories:
- Complete kit: Includes a cabinet, drivers, amplifier, crossover, wiring, and instructions.
- Build package: Includes matched drivers and electronics but expects you to supply or build the enclosure.
- Electronics platform: Provides a Bluetooth amplifier and possibly DSP, while you design the cabinet, select drivers, plan the battery system, and configure the controls.
A product’s Bluetooth version or wattage does not tell you how much construction remains. Cabinet cutting, sealing, battery installation, antenna placement, and finishing can be the largest parts of the project.

1. Dayton Audio MKBoom: best overall complete portable kit
Best for: A first portable speaker with the least acoustic guesswork.
The MKBoom is the closest option here to an all-in-one speaker-building kit. Its knock-down cabinet is designed around two 4-inch midbass drivers, two 3⁄4-inch tweeters, port tubes, and crossover boards. The package also includes a Bluetooth amplifier, battery board, panel controls, a 15V/4A power supply, and step-by-step instructions.
What you still need
The cited Dayton version is specifically without batteries. You must also provide ordinary tools, screws or mounting hardware where required, adhesive or gasket material, and finishing supplies if you want a painted or stained cabinet. The kit’s listed dimensions are approximately 17.75 inches wide, 7.5 inches deep, and 5.5 inches high.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPower and portability
It is a reasonably portable, carryable cabinet rather than a pocket speaker. Dayton advertises Bluetooth operation, aptX HD, and an AUX input. Codec support is not the same as a guaranteed sound-quality result: your source device, antenna placement, interference, amplifier implementation, and speaker design also matter.
Verdict
Choose the MKBoom when you want a matched cabinet-and-driver design and do not want to calculate enclosure volume or port tuning. It is the safest recommendation for a first project, provided you confirm whether the selected product version includes batteries.
Price signal: Dayton lists a battery-free MSRP of $188.99; retailer prices and battery-included versions may differ. See the Parts Express listing.

2. Small Portable 60W Bluetooth Ammo Box Kit: best rugged beginner project
Best for: A compact workshop, garage, or jobsite-style speaker.
The ammo-box kit combines a Dayton Audio KAB-230v4 Bluetooth amplifier, rated at 2 × 30W, with two PC83-8 3-inch full-range drivers and the related battery and wiring components. The wiring is intended to be plug-in, and downloadable instructions are available.
What you still need
The advertised component package does not include the 30-caliber-style ammo box or batteries. You may also need mounting hardware, gasket material, a handle, feet, grille protection, and a way to make clean openings in the box. Its approximate $109.98 price signal is therefore not the finished-project cost.
Important enclosure warning
A metal ammo box is durable, but it can shield or weaken the Bluetooth antenna. Follow the amplifier’s antenna and clearance instructions; an approved external-antenna arrangement may be necessary. Do not assume that a metal enclosure is weatherproof or outdoor-safe unless the box and completed assembly have an appropriate rating.
Runtime and sound
A related listing gives roughly five to six hours at moderate volume, but runtime changes with cell capacity, listening level, music content, amplifier efficiency, and battery condition. The 60W figure is an amplifier rating, not a guarantee of acoustic loudness. Driver sensitivity, enclosure leaks, cabinet resonance, and distortion limits matter too.

3. Portable 30W Bluetooth Speaker Package: best for a custom enclosure
Best for: Repurposing an existing cabinet or building a speaker in a shape of your own.
The 30W package pairs a Dayton Audio KAB-215 amplifier, advertised at 2 × 15W, with two PC68 full-range drivers and associated battery electronics. It is more accurately a matched driver-and-electronics package than a complete speaker kit.
Battery status requires verification
The product description says that three 18650 lithium-ion cells are required and that batteries are sold separately. However, another feature line appears to say batteries are included. Treat the listing as unresolved: verify the live checkout contents or contact the seller before ordering, and do not budget on the assumption that cells are supplied.
Enclosure work
You must provide or construct the cabinet. Incorrect internal volume, port dimensions, driver spacing, or sealing can make a good component package sound poor. Plan openings for the drivers, controls, charging connection, and any vents; provide amplifier and battery clearance; and secure panels so they cannot vibrate.
Choose it if: You already have a suitable enclosure or want maximum control over the shape and appearance. It is not the best choice for someone who expects a cabinet, cut list, and finished acoustic alignment in the box.
4. Dayton Audio KABD-250: best customizable platform
Best for: An enthusiast who wants a compact stereo build with DSP and room to upgrade.

What you must add
You still need drivers, an enclosure, a 12–24V DC power supply rated appropriately for the design, or a compatible battery system, plus mounting hardware, controls, and speaker wiring as necessary. Dayton lists a battery-free board MSRP of $83.99, but that is only the electronics portion of the project.
DSP trade-off
DSP can provide EQ, crossover functions, bass management, and time alignment, but programming is not automatic. Custom programming requires SigmaStudio and a compatible interface such as the DSPB-ICP1. A builder who does not want to design filters can use a documented configuration where available, but should not assume that the board alone supplies a finished acoustic design.
Choose it if: You understand impedance, power supplies, cabinet volume, and basic speaker design. For a beginner, the flexibility adds more ways to make an expensive mistake.

Best for: A serious DSP, multi-way, 2.1, or high-output custom project.
The KABD-430 provides four 30W channels, Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD, ADAU1701 DSP, plug-in harnesses, and manufacturer-described battery-board options. Its four channels make it the more plausible choice for a moderate-power stereo, multi-way, or 2.1-style build.
Best Value
- Subwoofer Audio Amplifier Board: 100W+100W Bluetooth 5.0 wireless connection, Bluetooth, USB and AUX audio input, 2.0 channel stereo output, just a little sound distortion. Note: When using AUX mode, please confirm that the Bluetooth connection of this module has been disconnected;

The KABD-4100 is the high-output alternative, specified at 4 × 100W under stated test conditions with a 36V DC recommended supply. Dayton lists an MSRP of $120.99 for the board and describes four-channel operation with the possibility of cascading boards for more channels.
Why this is an advanced pick
Neither board includes drivers or a cabinet. You must design for power delivery, heat, speaker impedance, ventilation, mounting, and battery current. At maximum output, the KABD-4100 demands substantially more from the supply and thermal system than the portable packages. DSP programming also requires SigmaStudio and a compatible programming interface.
Choose the KABD-430 for a realistic lower-power custom build. Choose the KABD-4100 only when you specifically need high output and are prepared to engineer the power and cooling system. Neither should be presented as a beginner-ready kit.
How to compare amplifier wattage
Do not rank these products by the biggest number on the label. Amplifier output depends on supply voltage, speaker impedance, distortion level used for the measurement, and whether the figure is per channel or total. The finished speaker’s loudness also depends on driver sensitivity, enclosure alignment, battery current capability, and thermal limits.
For example, the KABD-250’s 2 × 50W specification assumes stated test conditions, including a 24V supply and 4-ohm load. The KABD-4100’s 4 × 100W figure is likewise tied to stated conditions, including a 36V supply and 6-ohm load. These are not guarantees that an unfinished cabinet will play four times louder.
What to budget beyond the kit price
Use this formula:
Finished cost = package price + batteries + enclosure + power supply or charger + hardware + wiring + finishing materials + shipping and tax.
- Reputable, matched 18650 or 26650 cells where required
- Compatible battery or protection board and charger
- DC power supply matched to the amplifier’s voltage and current requirements
- Fuse or additional protection where appropriate
- Switches, potentiometers, connectors, speaker wire, screws, and standoffs
- Foam gasket tape, acoustic damping, enclosure material, and finish
- Handle, grille, feet, or carrying hardware
- DSP programming interface for KABD projects
Do not mix lithium-ion cells with different capacities, ages, or charge states. Insulate cells from metal hardware, provide strain relief, and stop using any cell that is swollen, damaged, or overheating. Follow the exact battery-board and charger instructions for the amplifier you choose; do not substitute an arbitrary battery arrangement.
Is soldering required?
Several Dayton packages emphasize plug-in wiring, but that does not make every build tool-free. Expect to use screwdrivers, a drill and bits, wire-routing hardware, adhesive or gasket material, and sandpaper or finish. Cutting driver holes, switch openings, ports, and mounting points may be necessary. Soldering is typically only needed if you change connectors, extend wires, or add controls—but verify the individual manual before starting.
Beginner-friendly build path
- Inventory every part before assembly and confirm the selected battery version.
- Read the amplifier, battery-board, and kit instructions.
- Confirm battery type, polarity, voltage range, and charger compatibility.
- Dry-fit the amplifier, battery board, controls, drivers, and wiring.
- Assemble and seal the cabinet or enclosure before final installation.
- Install drivers with gasket material and check that panels are rigid.
- Connect wiring with the power source disconnected.
- Inspect for shorts, loose strands, pinched wires, and unsecured cells.
- Test Bluetooth at low volume.
- Increase volume gradually while checking distortion, heat, rattles, and battery behavior.
Common problems and fixes
- No power
- Disconnect the battery and inspect polarity, connectors, fuse protection, and the amplifier’s required voltage. If using a KABD battery board, Dayton notes that the charging adapter may need to be connected briefly after batteries are installed or reinstalled before the amplifier starts.
- Bluetooth will not pair
- Clear the speaker from the source device’s Bluetooth list, reset pairing, move away from other wireless equipment, and check that the antenna is not trapped inside a metal enclosure.
- One driver is silent
- Power down and inspect the channel wiring, connector seating, driver terminals, and impedance. Do not repeatedly test a suspected short at high volume.
- Distortion at moderate volume
- Reduce volume and bass boost, check supply voltage and current capacity, inspect for clipped DSP settings, and verify that the driver impedance matches the amplifier.
- Weak bass
- Look for air leaks around the drivers and cabinet joints, incorrect port dimensions, reversed driver polarity, inadequate enclosure volume, or a DSP configuration that reduces low frequencies.
- Rattling cabinet
- Check loose screws, vibrating panels, handles, grilles, wires, and battery mounts. Add bracing or gasket material where appropriate.
- Short runtime or shutdown
- Volume, cell capacity, battery age, music content, heat, and amplifier protection all affect runtime. Verify the battery arrangement and supply limits rather than assuming the advertised wattage is the cause.
Which kit should you buy?
- Least uncertainty: Dayton Audio MKBoom.
- Rugged workshop project: Small Portable 60W Ammo Box Kit.
- Custom cabinet: Portable 30W Bluetooth Speaker Package, after verifying battery contents.
- Best enthusiast upgrade path: Dayton Audio KABD-250.
- Advanced DSP or multi-channel build: KABD-430; select KABD-4100 only for a carefully engineered high-output project.
For a broader overview of Dayton’s kit ecosystem, see the Dayton Audio speaker-kits category. The best choice is the one whose remaining construction work matches your tools, electrical experience, enclosure skills, and realistic budget—not necessarily the one with the highest wattage.
