Tool-Triggered Dust Extractors: How They Work and What to Check

A tool-triggered extractor starts with a compatible power tool or control. Compare activation, task fit, filtration, airflow, capacity and accessories—and assess dust-control requirements for the actual job.

A tool-triggered dust extractor starts and stops extraction when a compatible power tool or wireless control signals it. That can keep collection synchronized with the work, but the trigger feature alone does not establish that a setup captures a particular dust hazard or meets applicable requirements. Check the complete tool, accessory, extractor and task combination.

How tool-triggered extraction works

Instead of switching on a separate vacuum manually, a tool-triggered extractor receives a signal associated with tool operation and starts or stops accordingly. The signal may be wired or wireless; those systems are not automatically interchangeable.

Tool-activated outlet

On the Bosch VAC090AH, Bosch specifies a tool-activated outlet that lets the connected power tool’s switch turn the extractor on and off. Confirm the tool’s power requirements and the extractor’s outlet instructions before connecting equipment. Bosch VAC090AH specifications.

Wireless tool-to-extractor control

Makita’s AWS uses Bluetooth communication between equipped tools and extractors. Compatible system components must communicate and be paired; a Bluetooth-equipped tool does not automatically trigger an unrelated extractor. Makita says its extractor runs while the AWS tool is in use and describes reduced continuous noise as a benefit of running only during tool use. That is the manufacturer’s stated benefit, not a quantified result for every setup. Makita AWS and extractor information.

What to verify before choosing one

Start with the work and the dust-control setup, not just the extractor’s headline airflow or trigger feature. A fitting hose connection does not by itself show that the arrangement is suitable for a given task.

  • Activation and power: Identify whether the extractor uses a tool-activated outlet, remote, or wireless system. Check the exact tool, extractor, pairing requirements and power source.
  • Task and accessories: Match the extractor to the operation—such as drilling, cutting or grinding—and verify the shroud, hose, adapter and connection for that tool and material.
  • Filtration and collection: Check the filter rating and configuration, collection bags or other method, and whether the extractor supports wet use if needed. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for filters and consumables.
  • Filter cleaning and pre-separation: Determine whether automatic filter cleaning or a pre-separator is needed for the task and system. Dust buildup can reduce capture; OSHA’s compliance workbook discusses filter-cleaning mechanisms and cyclonic pre-separators in relation to specified Table 1 entries. OSHA Compliance Guide for Silica (2021).
  • Airflow and suction: Consider the manufacturer’s airflow and suction specifications alongside the tool and dust attachment. CFM alone does not establish capture performance.
  • Capacity and mobility: Consider tank or bag capacity, hose reach, weight, wheels, transport needs and available power.
  • Fit and replacement parts: Confirm hose diameter, connector and adapter fit, and the exact compatible filter and bag part numbers. Check that replacements are available.

Manufacturer specifications: two examples

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results or a head-to-head comparison. The figures were captured from official product pages in 2026. Differences in test methods and filtration wording mean the values should not be treated as directly comparable.

Model and source Published specifications Activation and other stated features
Bosch VAC090AH Bosch lists maximum airflow of 150 CFM, 9-gallon capacity, automatic filter cleaning every 15 seconds, and HEPA filtration rated at 99.97% for particles 0.3 microns or larger. Bosch specifies 120 V, a tool-activated outlet and Power Broker suction adjustment.
Milwaukee 8960-20 Milwaukee lists 148 CFM airflow, 8-gallon capacity, HEPA filtration rated at 99.97% for particles greater than 0.3 microns, and 69 dB. Milwaukee describes an onboard tool-activated plug, automatic filter cleaning and a suction-control dial.

Specifications describe what each manufacturer publishes for its model; they do not prove performance with a particular tool, material or accessory. Neither example establishes a universal best choice.

Automatic start is not the same as task compliance

OSHA’s construction silica standard, 29 CFR 1926.1153, sets exposure-control requirements for covered construction tasks, with provisions that depend on the task and control method. An extractor that starts automatically is only one possible component of a dust-control setup; the trigger feature itself is not a certification of exposure control.

OSHA’s 2021 compliance workbook says employers may use aftermarket products intended to fit the make and model of a tool. It also says collection systems should capture tool-generated dust without introducing hazards, such as obstructing safety mechanisms. OSHA Compliance Guide for Silica.

Manufacturers’ compliance statements can be limited to select applications, tested tool models and specified conditions. Makita identifies select applications and tested models and conditions; DEWALT likewise presents compliance through specific tool-and-accessory combinations. Consult the applicable standard and product documentation for the actual task and configuration rather than treating a general extractor claim as universal. Check accessory compatibility and upkeep

Filters, collection bags, hoses and adapters are model-specific items, not generic assumptions. Bosch lists compatible bags, filter types, hoses and extension accessories for the VAC090AH; Milwaukee lists a hose, filters, bags and adapters for the 8960-20. Before ordering or connecting an accessory, verify the part number and connector fit against the exact extractor and tool. Bosch VAC090AH accessories; Milwaukee 8960-20 information.
