The OpenX Dual Blade Package Opener is designed to start a cut with a retractable piercing blade, then continue it with a recessed slide blade. Ranchmark lists it for plastic packaging and several other everyday items, but warns that both the blades and cut plastic edges are sharp. Its listed model is OX-102; whether it suits your needs depends on the packaging you open, your comfort with the two-step motion, and safe handling.
How the OpenX package opener works
Ranchmark’s instructions describe a two-step opening process. First, extend the piercing blade, pierce the plastic and pull the tool to make an initial slit. Then place the front tip of the recessed slide blade into that slit and push the tool along the package. The manufacturer’s product instructions explain the intended sequence; the retailer listing identifies the retractable piercing blade and recessed slide blade.
- Extend the piercing blade and keep your fingers clear of the blade and the path of the cut.
- Pierce the package and pull the tool to create a starting slit.
- Insert the front tip into the slit, then push and slide to continue opening it.
This is a deliberate start-then-slide method, rather than a claim that the tool makes every package easy or safe to open. Use it only where the material and cut direction allow you to keep your hand out of the cutting path.
What packaging is it intended to open?
Ranchmark lists plastic packages, boxes, pill containers, snack bags and water bottles as intended uses. The retailer listing also names blister packs, shipping boxes, disc wrappers and pill bottles. These are stated use cases, not a guarantee that the opener will work well on every package, plastic type or shape.

Design details and reviewer observations
The Opentip listing identifies the tool as model OX-102 and gives its length as 7 inches. In a review published September 18, 2012, Eric Weinhoffer at Make: described a hard yellow plastic case, a hanging keyhole and a removable slide blade. He also reported using the piercing blade for some cuts. Those are details and impressions from that dated review, not fresh testing.
A 2007 Cool Tools entry, marked a Cool Tools Favorite in a 2018 update, includes a left-handed contributor’s report that the button placement made operation awkward for them. That is one person’s experience; the sources do not establish a general handedness specification or controlled comparison.

Safety: sharp blades and sharp package edges
Ranchmark’s instructions state: “WARNING: Extremely Sharp Blades. Keep out of reach of children. When package is cut, plastic edges are sharp.” The piercing blade is exposed to start a cut, so keep fingers away from both the blade and the direction of travel. Handle the opened package carefully as well: its cut plastic may be sharp. The available information does not establish comparative injury rates against scissors or utility knives, and the OpenX should not be treated as risk-free.

Ranchmark maintains an OpenX product and order page, and Opentip identifies the OX-102. Make: said in its 2012 review that the tool could be purchased on Amazon at that time. Current Amazon listing status, stock and price have not been verified, so search for “OpenX Dual Blade Package Opener” and confirm that any listing is the exact product before ordering. The available information also does not verify a current manufacturer affiliate or referral program.
