Before reusing one, check that it fits the plant, can be anchored securely, and leaves room to tend and harvest. Two household frames can also become garden supports with a little adaptation.
Why tomato cages work for some plants and fail for others
Tomato variety matters. University of Vermont Extension describes determinate tomatoes as bushy and compact, while indeterminate types keep growing and can exceed 7 feet. Standard cages are a better fit for compact varieties; University of Minnesota Extension likewise cautions that indeterminate tomatoes usually grow taller than ordinary conical cages. A vigorous plant can outgrow its support or make it unstable.
For an individual plant, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends a wire cage 20–24 inches in diameter and 4–5 feet tall as an excellent option. It also advises choosing cage openings large enough to reach through for harvest and staking the cage for added sturdiness. Those dimensions are guidance for tomato cages, not a guarantee of suitability for every plant or variety.
Two household frames to repurpose
Support peonies with a lampshade frame
The Associated Press has reported an idea for turning a large lampshade frame into a peony support: remove the fabric, set the frame over emerging growth, and secure it at the base. Check that the frame is wide and tall enough for the plant, has sturdy construction, and has no edges likely to injure you or damage stems. This is a reported garden adaptation, not a tested recommendation for every peony or frame.

Make an obelisk-style trellis from an umbrella frame
The AP also reported adapting an old patio umbrella frame into a climbing-plant trellis. The idea involves shortening the legs as needed and sinking the frame into the ground. Inspect it first, adapt it without leaving hazardous edges, and anchor it firmly. Use it only for a climber whose weight and growth fit the frame; an improvised trellis is not automatically strong enough for every vine.
Choose a cage, stake, or Florida weave
The best option depends on whether you are supporting one plant or a row, how tall the plant will grow, how much tying or pruning you are willing to do, and whether the support leaves enough access for harvesting and can be stored between seasons.

| Support | Best fit | Trade-offs and setup |
|---|---|---|
| Cage | A single tomato, especially a compact determinate variety. | Needs relatively little ongoing attention, but a vigorous plant can outgrow it. Choose openings that allow harvest access and stake the cage to improve stability, as Iowa State Extension advises. |
| Stake | A tomato that can be trained to an upright support. | Inexpensive, but requires tying and pruning as the plant grows. Set the stake deeply enough to resist wind, following University of Minnesota Extension guidance. |
| Florida weave | A row of tomatoes supported between posts. | Twine is woven between plants and anchored to posts; add more as plants grow. UVM Extension recommends 7- to 8-foot T-posts for indeterminate tomatoes. Benjamin Block of UVM Extension calls the system “foolproof and economical.” |
A cage might be considered for another vegetable if the plant grows upright and fits the support, but not every crop benefits from being caged or trellised. University of Minnesota Extension says cucumbers and small squash do not need fruit support on a trellis; larger squash and pumpkins are too heavy to trellis and should grow on the ground.

If an ordinary cage is too flimsy, University of Minnesota Extension describes a sturdier option: cut 56- to 60-inch lengths from 4-foot-wide reinforcing mesh and form each piece into a cage about 18 inches in diameter. The mesh is difficult to work. Wear gloves, long sleeves, long pants, and eye protection when cutting and handling it, and secure the finished cage against tipping.

Anchor, inspect, and clean supports before reuse
- Anchor against wind and plant weight. University of Minnesota Extension recommends setting stakes deeply enough to resist wind and securing homemade cages with stakes on opposite sides. UGA Extension warns that a large, top-heavy plant may tip an unanchored cage.
- Check the fit and condition. Before installing a reused frame, make sure it is high and strong enough for the plant, stable in the soil, and free of hazardous sharp or damaged parts.
- Clean supports between seasons. Illinois Extension warns that disease pathogens can overwinter in crevices on cages and stakes. Clean reusable supports before returning them to the garden.
