To keep wasps from gathering around your backyard, remove food and garbage attractants, check for early nest activity, and avoid disturbing nests. Cover outdoor meals, clean up scraps, secure bins, and pick up fallen fruit. Traps may help with a localized or short-term problem, but they do not remove a nest or make a yard wasp-free. If a nest is large, concealed, in the ground, or difficult to reach, contact a pest management professional.

Reduce what attracts wasps to the yard

Wasps forage for food, so sanitation is the most useful everyday prevention. Keep food and drinks covered between servings, and promptly remove scraps and dirty dishes after outdoor meals. Store garbage in tightly closed containers, clean bins when food residue builds up, and avoid leaving food waste exposed. Pick up fallen fruit, and keep pet food indoors or covered when it is not being eaten.

These steps make outdoor dining less inviting, but they cannot prevent every wasp from passing through. Social wasps also hunt pest insects and may forage on flowers; their presence alone does not mean a nest is nearby. The University of Maryland Extension describes their ecological roles and common sting triggers in its guide to social wasps.

Inspect early, without disturbing a nest

As temperatures warm and again in early summer, look for wasp activity and paper nests around eaves, sheds, play structures, dense shrubs, and ground-level openings. Health Canada recommends early-summer checks around the home and yard, and Iowa State University Extension advises scouting as the season warms. Early identification gives you time to assess the location before a nest grows or becomes a routine hazard.

Look from a safe distance. Do not put a hand into a cavity or opening you cannot see into, and do not approach a nest to identify the species. If activity leads to a wall void, ground opening, roof space, or another inaccessible location, leave investigation and treatment to a professional.

What to do when a wasp comes near people or food

A wasp near a meal is often foraging, not attacking. It is more likely to sting if it is handled, swatted, trapped against the body, or if its nest is disturbed. Stay calm, avoid sudden attempts to hit it, and cover or remove the food that is attracting it. If needed, gently redirect it with a longer object rather than using your hand.

Do wasp traps work?

Baited traps can catch some foraging wasps, but their usefulness depends on the wasp species and lure. A trap is best treated as a limited tool for a localized problem or a short-term outdoor event—not a way to eliminate a nest or control wasps throughout a property. Iowa State Extension notes that commercial lure effectiveness varies among paper wasp species.

Place a commercial baited yellowjacket or wasp trap well away from dining, play, and other areas where people gather. Bait can draw more wasp activity toward the trap, so placing one beside a patio table can make the immediate area less comfortable. Health Canada says food bait can increase trap effectiveness but also warns about nearby activity; it suggests protein bait rather than sweet bait to reduce bee bycatch. The Province of British Columbia’s yellow jacket guidance also advises careful trap placement.

Decide whether a nest can be left alone

A nest that is safely out of the way may not need immediate removal. Wasps can prey on pest insects and pollinate while foraging; Kansas State University entomologist Raymond Cloyd describes them as beneficial parts of the ecosystem. Health Canada recommends leaving a nest until late in the year if it presents no health hazard, then removing it once abandoned.

Risk depends on more than nest size. A nest near a doorway, play area, or regular work zone is harder to avoid than one in an unused corner. Ground nests, nests inside walls, nests high on a ladder-accessible structure, uncertain identification, and occupants with a history of severe allergic reactions are reasons to avoid DIY removal. Active nest removal can provoke multiple wasps. Cloyd advises: “To avoid getting stung, contact a pest management professional.” Kansas State’s 2026 guidance on protecting a home from wasps distinguishes newly forming nests from large, mature nests and recommends professional help for the latter.

Use sprays only when the product and site are suitable

A labeled wasp and hornet spray is not a universal solution for every nest. If considering a pesticide, confirm that its label covers the target pest and the exact application site, read all directions and warnings, and follow local requirements. Do not apply a product to a wall void, ground nest, or other location unless its label permits that use. When a nest is large, concealed, high, or otherwise hazardous to reach, seek professional help instead of attempting treatment.

For readers in Canada, Health Canada advises checking the product’s Pest Control Products registration number and following the label. Registration requirements differ by jurisdiction, so that Canadian instruction should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. See Health Canada’s wasp guidance for its prevention, trap, nest, and pesticide advice.
