Time-shifting energy means storing electricity when it is available or inexpensive and using it later. At home, a Tesla Powerwall can hold surplus solar power—or charge from the grid when rates are lower—for use after sunset or during an outage. At utility scale, Megapack systems can store electricity and dispatch it when the grid needs it. Neither battery creates energy: each moves its availability from one time to another.
What is time-shifting energy?
Think of electricity on a timeline: solar panels may produce more than a house uses at midday, or grid prices may be lower overnight. A battery stores some of that electricity so it can be used later, when solar output falls, household demand rises, or grid conditions make stored power useful.

This is a timing strategy, not a new source of electricity. Its value depends on when energy is stored and released, how much energy the system can hold, how quickly it can deliver power, and the rules and prices that apply locally.

Tesla describes Powerwall as a home battery that can store electricity from solar or the grid. With solar, surplus daytime production can be stored for evening use instead of being used immediately or exported. Where the electricity plan permits it, the battery can also charge from the grid during lower-price periods and supply the home later. Tesla calls this residential use load shifting.

Capacity and power answer different questions
Tesla’s published U.S. Powerwall 3 specifications list 13.5 kWh of energy capacity and 11.5 kW of continuous on-grid power. Tesla’s product specifications distinguish how much energy a battery can store from how quickly it can deliver it: kWh measures stored energy, while kW measures power at a given moment. These figures alone do not tell you how many hours a particular house can run. Runtime depends on household load, system configuration, and which circuits are backed up.
Backup and bill shifting are related but separate benefits
A Powerwall may be configured to provide backup during an outage, but backup performance depends on the installation and the loads connected to it. A high reserve setting can leave more stored energy available for outages, while leaving less available for routine bill shifting. Resilience value should therefore be evaluated separately from expected electricity-bill savings.
How Megapack and Megablock serve the grid
Megapack is Tesla’s utility-scale battery product. Tesla describes it as integrating battery modules, inverters, and thermal systems; its utilities materials describe energy shifting as storing and dispatching excess renewable capacity. At this scale, operators can shift electricity toward periods of greater need and use storage for grid services. The project’s usefulness depends on such factors as power and duration, location, interconnection, software controls, market access, and lifecycle costs—not just battery capacity.

Megablock is a newer medium-voltage architecture that Tesla says integrates four Megapack 3 units. The timing of production is a company roadmap, not evidence that production has begun: Tesla’s Q3 2025 update said Megapack 3 production was expected to begin in Houston during 2026, and its Q2 2026 update said Megapack 3 and Megablock production remained on track for later in 2026. Tesla’s quarterly updates are the source for those dated plans and status statements.
What the two battery scales have in common—and what they do not
Both systems shift energy availability across time. A home battery is sized and configured around a building’s solar production, household demand, backup needs, and electricity plan. A utility battery is part of a grid project, where dispatch, connection to the network, operating services, and project economics matter. Their shared principle does not make their uses interchangeable.
Storage can help make variable renewable generation available at a different time, but it does not generate electricity. The Tesla materials cited here do not establish that batteries alone provide seasonal or long-duration storage; assess a project’s duration and role rather than assuming a battery covers every gap between supply and demand.

When can a home battery lower an electricity bill?
Bill savings are possible when the value of electricity used later exceeds the costs and losses involved in storing it. The outcome depends on the local tariff and system, not on the battery alone. Relevant variables include:
- Peak and off-peak price spread: shifting use is more valuable when rates differ substantially. A flat-rate plan offers less opportunity for price arbitrage.
- Solar surplus and household load: limited excess solar leaves less energy to save for later. The home’s evening demand determines how much stored energy can be used.
- Export compensation: sending surplus solar to the grid may be more or less valuable than storing it, depending on local rules and rates.
- Battery reserve and outage exposure: keeping energy in reserve for backup reduces the amount available for routine shifting.
- System and financing costs: installation and financing expenses affect whether bill reductions justify the investment.
Tesla says its controls can use usage history, weather forecasts, and utility price estimates to optimize stored energy. That describes a control capability, not a guarantee of savings. Tesla’s Australian Energy Plan guide describes load shifting under that plan and market; its rates, credits, and export arrangements should not be treated as terms available elsewhere. What Tesla’s installed-base figures do—and do not—show
On September 8, 2025, Tesla said more than one million Powerwall units had been installed across 30 countries. The same company announcement reported 17.3 TWh of clean energy generated with solar, 6.7 GW of fleet battery power, 21.5 million outages avoided, and more than $60 million in virtual power plant compensation. These are Tesla-reported fleet metrics, not independently verified estimates of what an individual household will save or receive.
