How to Build a Sliding Tile Clock: Design Choices and Parts

A documented sliding tile clock uses four stepper-driven digit modules and Wi-Fi time. Compare its parts and mechanism with a separate rack-and-pinion design, and understand the build details that remain unspecified.

A sliding tile clock displays hours and minutes using physical number tiles rather than a conventional digital screen. The documented 2025 design combines four stepper-driven digit mechanisms, an Arduino Nano ESP32, ULN2003 motor drivers, custom 3D-printed parts, and Wi-Fi time from an NTP server. Its digit assemblies rotate to advance the tiles; the available project materials do not establish a complete parts list or explain how the mechanism recovers its physical position after power loss.

How the sliding-tile mechanism displays time

The featured clock has four digit positions for hours and minutes. Each digit mechanism contains number tiles; when the stepper-driven assembly rotates 180 degrees, the next tile slides into the visible display area. Four motors control the four digit mechanisms independently. See Hackaday’s March 31, 2025 report and the Arduino Project Hub project.

The electronics and software coordinate timekeeping with these physical movements. The Arduino Nano ESP32 connects over Wi-Fi, retrieves time from an NTP server, calculates the four positions from the hour and minute, and advances the mechanisms to match. The project code sets a 60-second NTP update interval and includes Central European summer- and standard-time rules; builders in other time zones need to adapt those rules. The code and report do not establish a measured timekeeping accuracy.

Choose a documented design before sourcing parts

Two projects illustrate distinct ways to build a clock with moving number displays. They are alternatives, not interchangeable parts lists: verify the selected design’s wiring, motor-driver pairing, supply voltage, controller pins, and mechanical coupling before purchasing or assembling components.

Mechanical motion Four stepper-driven digit assemblies rotate to reveal sliding tiles. Vertical number slides move with 3D-printed rack-and-pinion gears.
Controller Arduino Nano ESP32. Arduino Uno.
Motors and drivers Four steppers and ULN2003 motor-driver ICs, as reported by Hackaday; the available source does not provide a verified full bill of materials. Four 28BYJ 5V steppers, four A4988 stepper drivers, and a CNC motor shield, according to the project’s listed supplies.
Time source Wi-Fi and an NTP server. PCF8523 real-time clock module.
Fabrication Custom 3D-printed mechanism parts. Fourteen listed 3D-printed parts, including gears and supports, plus wooden number slides with laser-engraved digits; the author specifies PLA for the printed parts.
Project reference Arduino Project Hub project and Hackaday report. Moose408’s Instructables overview. Its full instructions should be checked before relying on assembly details.

The 2025 project page identifies the Arduino Nano ESP32, while Hackaday reports the four steppers, ULN2003 drivers, and printed parts. Those sources do not establish the design’s complete bill of materials, mechanical dimensions, print settings, cost, or performance. The 2020 project is a separate reference; its components should not be assumed to fit the newer rotating-tile mechanism.

Plan the build around the chosen electronics and time source

For the rotating-tile design

Use the Nano ESP32, four motorized digit modules, ULN2003 drivers, and custom mechanism parts as the starting architecture described in the 2025 project. Consult the project page and its code for the implementation details it provides. The project description does not supply a verified, complete purchasing list, so confirm exact motor models, wiring, power requirements, pin assignments, and mechanical dimensions against its documentation rather than filling gaps by mixing in parts from the other design.

The threaded design allows easy installation (no complex tools needed) and keeps the movement stable, preventing wobbling or misalignment of hands
  • Fit for 9in–12in Clock Surfaces: Tailored for clock panels measuring 9in–12in (22.8–30.5cm) in size and 0.35in–0.43in (9–11mm) in thickness, the kit ensures a precise, snug fit
  • Hassle-Free Installation: To ensure a smooth setup experience, the package includes detailed installation instructions and a QR code for accessing a step-by-step video tutorial
  • Numeral Set and Positioning Template: The kit includes four 3 cm numerals and a positioning template paper. The template ensures accurate alignment of the numerals

For the rack-and-pinion alternative

Moose408’s Slide Clock overview lists an Arduino Uno, CNC motor shield, four A4988 drivers, four 28BYJ 5V stepper motors, and a PCF8523 RTC. Its mechanism uses printed rack-and-pinion gears and wooden, laser-engraved number slides; the author lists 14 printed parts and PLA for those parts. Treat the overview as a distinct design reference, and verify its full instructions before relying on details for assembly.

Account for time-zone and position recovery

The 2025 code’s Central European daylight- and standard-time rules are not a universal timezone configuration. If building elsewhere, adapt the rules to the clock’s intended location and verify how the software handles the local changeover. The 60-second NTP update interval is a code setting, not evidence of a measured accuracy or guarantee that every display update occurs without error.

Please install hands in order (hour, minute, second) and keep them parallel for smooth operation. Aluminum movement may have minor transportation deformation, which is normal and can be adjusted manually.

The code initializes the displayed tile positions at zero, but the available report and code do not show an automatic homing routine. That leaves physical-position recovery after a power interruption unresolved: a controller’s initialized software position may not establish where a tile mechanism actually sits. Do not assume the display will automatically resynchronize mechanically after power loss unless the selected build documentation or your own implementation provides and verifies a homing or position-recovery method.
