Construction is active on the Thomas Nelson Middle School and High School Improvements project in Bardstown, Kentucky. Site crews have been preparing footers for concrete placement, while the school’s band program estimates that the expanded campus will be ready for the 2027–2028 school year. Public sources do not provide a verified percentage-complete figure or an independently documented baseline schedule, so “on schedule” should be understood as the project’s stated status rather than a quantified progress measurement.

What is being built at the Thomas Nelson campus?

The project, identified as BG #22-345, expands the Thomas Nelson campus at 150 Generals Blvd. with a dedicated middle-school wing and improvements to existing high-school areas. The district’s facilities planning describes the addition as extending onto recently acquired adjacent property.

The expansion is intended to create a clearer 6–12 grade campus arrangement while keeping existing parking and athletic amenities in place. Plans also call for better visibility from Kentucky 245, a separate middle-school entrance and a dedicated traffic loop. Those features are intended to separate middle-school arrival and dismissal movements from high-school circulation.

Planned educational spaces

The Kentucky Department of Education facility plan lists new standard classrooms, resource classrooms, an FMD (functional mental disability) classroom, restrooms and a secure vestibule as part of the Thomas Nelson Middle/High School reconfiguration.

High-school improvements

The work is not limited to the new wing. The contract package also includes remodeling and building improvements in high-school areas so the campus can function as a combined 6–12 facility after construction.

Current construction activity

A Central Midwest Carpenters trade update documented footer preparation at the site. Member Todd Wallace said, “We’re studying footers for the project right now. We’re going to be pouring concrete here in a little bit.” Footer work and imminent concrete placement indicate that the project has moved into active structural construction rather than remaining at a planning-only stage.

The publicly described construction package covers the major building trades needed to complete the addition and renovations:

When is the new middle school expected to open?

The Thomas Nelson Band program says, “Estimated completion is for the 2027-2028 school year.” That is the clearest public completion outlook currently available. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed opening date, and the accessible project information does not publish a revised substantial-completion date, milestone schedule or percentage-complete report.

The project was advertised for bids with a September 11, 2025 deadline. That procurement milestone confirms the project’s formal bidding stage, but it does not by itself establish when every phase will finish or when students will occupy each space.

Where are middle-school classes meeting during construction?

The school program is continuing while work proceeds on the Thomas Nelson campus. The band page says the middle-school band program is in a transitional state during construction. For the 2026–2027 school year, band classes are held at Old Kentucky Home Middle School during first and second period, in two sections.

This arrangement is a program-specific relocation described by the school. It shows how instruction is being phased around construction, but it does not establish that every middle-school class or activity is being held at Old Kentucky Home Middle School.

How much does the project cost?

A Nelson County facilities discussion reported by Citizen Portal in 2025 referenced an earlier November 2022 Thomas Nelson bid of approximately $24.5 million. That figure is useful historical context, but the available material does not identify it as the final contract value for BG #22-345, nor does it show whether later bids, scope changes or escalation altered the total.

Figure or milestone What it represents

Who is responsible for the work?

The Nelson County Board of Education is the owner. The bid advertisement names Codell Construction Company as construction manager, Studio Kremer Architects as architect, CMTA as mechanical and electrical engineer, KPFF Consulting Engineers as structural engineer and Buzzick as civil engineer.

What “on schedule” can—and cannot—be confirmed

Available public updates support three concrete conclusions: construction has begun in the field; footer and concrete work were imminent in the cited trade update; and the school program continues to plan around a 2027–2028 completion estimate. They do not support a numerical claim such as a percentage complete, a precise opening date or proof that every interim milestone has been met.

For families, the practical expectation is continued phased schooling during 2026–2027, including the documented band schedule at Old Kentucky Home Middle School, followed by a targeted campus completion in the 2027–2028 school year. The district or construction manager would need to publish an updated milestone schedule to verify any change to that outlook.
