Guerry Lumber is sponsoring a Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Build Day in Savannah on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Volunteers will turn lumber into beds at 123 W 44th St, Savannah, GA 31405, helping advance SHP’s mission: “No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town!” No power-tool experience is required, but participants must wear closed-toed shoes.
What is the Guerry Lumber Sleep in Heavenly Peace Build Day?
The event is a community construction day organized through SHP’s GA-Savannah chapter and sponsored by Guerry Lumber. Participants work in supervised stations to produce bed components that SHP chapters can deliver to children who need a safe place to sleep.
SHP describes its volunteer approach as an assembly line. Depending on the station, volunteers may measure and cut lumber, sand boards, drill and tap bed pieces, assemble components, stain wood, or apply branding. Chapter leaders direct the workflow and explain each task before work begins.

What volunteers do during the build
Measure, cut and prepare lumber
Some stations measure boards and cut them to the required dimensions. Other volunteers sand rough surfaces so the finished beds are safer to handle.
Drill, tap and assemble
Volunteers drill and tap pieces, then join prepared parts into bed assemblies. Chapter supervisors set the sequence and provide the tools and demonstrations needed for each station.
Rank #2
- Some of the species we carry are: Walnut, Red Oak, White Oak, Poplar, Cherry, Birch, Soft Maple, Hard Maple, Hickory, Cherry, and Red Grandis. You will get at least 3 different species
Finish and identify components
Depending on the chapter’s setup, the assembly line can include staining and branding stations. You may rotate between jobs rather than build an entire bed alone.
Can you volunteer without power-tool experience?
Yes. SHP says previous power-tool experience is not required. The chapter provides instructions and safety precautions, and its guidance emphasizes that willing volunteers will be taught what they need to know. Follow the station leader’s instructions, keep clear of active tools, and ask for a demonstration before starting an unfamiliar task.

Other ways to support children who need beds
| Option | What you contribute | Best for | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hands-on volunteering | Your time at the Savannah assembly line | People who want a direct, one-time local role | No prior power-tool experience is required; the chapter supplies instruction and safety equipment. |
| Material donation | New twin-size sheets, pillows or other bedding requested by the chapter | People who cannot attend or prefer a tangible donation | SHP asks chapters to collect these new twin-size items; confirm current specifications before buying. |
| Financial sponsorship | Funding for a sponsored build | Businesses, groups or donors seeking a larger organized commitment | SHP’s sponsor-a-build guidance lists a $5,000 minimum donation and says it supplies tools, equipment, instructions and safety precautions. |
How to donate bedding responsibly
- Contact or check the GA-Savannah chapter for its current bedding needs and acceptable specifications.
- Purchase new twin-size sheets, pillows or other requested bedding only after confirming those details.
- Keep items clean, unopened where practical, and clearly grouped for collection.
- Arrange drop-off with the chapter rather than leaving donations at the build venue without confirmation.
Needs can change as local deliveries and storage capacity change, so a current chapter confirmation matters more than a general list.
