Alex Harding’s Concrete Physics Clock makes a persuasive case for concrete as an enclosure material—but only for the right kind of project. Its Raspberry Pi-powered display shows colored numerals falling and piling up in a simulated gravity scene. Tilt the clock, and an accelerometer/gyroscope changes the direction of virtual gravity. The heavy cast-concrete body turns that interaction into something closer to handling a physical snow globe than waving around a lightweight screen.

That does not make concrete universally better than plastic, wood, metal, or a 3D-printed case. It does show how concrete can work exceptionally well when weight, permanence, tactile character, and visual impact matter more than portability or easy repairs.

A clock that behaves like a snow globe

The Concrete Physics Clock is a digital clock with an intentionally physical-looking interface. Instead of displaying fixed digits, it renders hours, minutes, and seconds as colored numerals that fall, collide, and accumulate. Their different colors, sizes, densities, or related visual properties allow the viewer to distinguish the time units.

The clock becomes interactive when it is tilted. An Adafruit LSM6DS33 accelerometer/gyroscope module detects movement and orientation. The software uses that information to alter the direction of gravity in the simulated scene, so the digits slide and fall toward the new virtual low point.

This is why the project is called a “physics” clock. It combines four kinds of physicality:

  • Physics simulation: the numerals behave like bodies affected by gravity and collisions.
  • Physical sensing: the inertial measurement unit detects how the enclosure is oriented.
  • Physical interaction: tilting the real object changes the virtual scene.
  • Material design: the concrete body adds mass, making the interaction feel intentional and substantial.

It is not a scientific instrument or a novel physics experiment. It is a creative interface built around familiar simulation techniques. Its achievement is making the enclosure, software, and interaction model reinforce one another.

Hackster’s coverage describes the project as an industrial, minimalist object with a display that visually contrasts against the concrete shell.

What is inside the enclosure?

The reported architecture combines a Raspberry Pi, Processing, a display, an inertial sensor, and a cast-concrete enclosure. The sources do not establish one definitive Raspberry Pi model or a verified final display part number, so these details should be treated as a description of the reported build rather than a complete bill of materials.

Element Reported role Important qualification
Raspberry Pi Runs the clock software and rendering environment The exact model is not firmly established in the available sources
Processing Provides the creative-coding environment and graphics Processing for Raspberry Pi is documented at pi.processing.org
Physics code Creates falling and colliding numerals The project was based on Box2D-inspired examples and Dan Shiffman’s tutorials; see Box2D
OLED display Shows the simulated scene Coverage describes an approximately five-inch OLED, reportedly repurposed from smartphone hardware
Adafruit LSM6DS33 Detects acceleration and angular motion Calibration and filtering determine how stable the tilt interaction feels
Concrete shell Provides the structural and visual enclosure It was cast using a 3D-printed form or mold

The Hackaday.io project page also records experimentation with displays and possible Android/Unity development. Those notes should not be read as proof that every explored configuration became part of the finished clock. The project remained experimental, with performance and finish issues still acknowledged.

Why concrete suits this particular project

Weight creates stability

A desk clock that invites the user to tilt it benefits from a heavy base. Concrete makes the object difficult to knock over during ordinary use and gives movement a slower, more deliberate character. A plastic enclosure might be easier to handle, but it would not create the same sense of a solid object resisting casual movement.

That advantage has a boundary: weight is useful on a desk and inconvenient everywhere else. Concrete increases shipping costs, makes repositioning harder, and can damage furniture if the underside is rough. Rubber feet, felt pads, or a separate protective base are small but important details.

It has a distinctive surface

Concrete brings an industrial appearance, mineral texture, and casting marks that are difficult to reproduce convincingly with ordinary plastic. Small pores, tonal variation, and edge imperfections can make each enclosure feel like an individual object.

Those imperfections are not automatically defects. An as-cast finish may suit a sculptural project, while sanding, sealing, or polishing can create a cleaner result. Harding reportedly found that the casting finish was not as clean as hoped, which illustrates a central truth of concrete work: the material’s final appearance depends heavily on the mold, mix, release process, vibration, curing, and finishing.

The mold makes unusual shapes possible

Cured concrete is difficult to modify, but wet concrete can take the shape of a carefully designed form. A 3D-printed mold allows a builder to create display recesses, cable openings, feet, chamfers, and other geometry before the pour.

This makes concrete more flexible than it first appears—but the flexibility exists mainly at the mold-design stage. Once the casting cures, changing the design becomes slow, dusty, and potentially destructive.

Concrete adds thermal mass, not guaranteed cooling

Concrete can absorb and spread heat, but that is not the same as effective cooling. A sealed enclosure can still trap warm air around a Raspberry Pi, display, regulator, or power supply. A concrete body should never be treated as a proven heatsink without temperature measurements under sustained load.

For a real build, provide airflow where practical, separate heat-producing components, keep sensitive parts away from enclosed power supplies, and check temperatures during the heaviest expected workload.

How the cast enclosure was made

The reported approach is straightforward in principle:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Design the enclosure geometry and internal clearances.
  2. Produce a 3D-printed form or mold.
  3. Plan the display opening, cable routes, mounting points, and electronics cavity.
  4. Pour concrete into the form.
  5. Allow the casting to cure.
  6. Remove the form and finish the exposed surfaces.
  7. Install the display, Raspberry Pi, sensor, wiring, and power arrangement.

This should not be treated as a complete reproduction recipe. The project page does not provide a downloadable mold, full components list, mix ratios, or complete construction instructions.

The most important construction decision is what happens inside the concrete. A monolithic pour can look clean, but it can also permanently trap the electronics. A better enclosure plan normally includes a removable rear panel, a separate internal electronics tray, or a printed carrier that can be lifted out of the concrete shell.

Concrete enclosure design: the details that determine success

Allow for wall thickness and rounded corners

Concrete is not simply plastic poured into a thicker shape. Thin walls, sharp internal corners, narrow projections, and abrupt changes in section can create weak points. Generous radii reduce stress concentrations and make demolding easier. The final wall should be thick enough to tolerate handling, vibration, and small casting defects rather than being copied directly from a thin plastic prototype.

Fine features may also fail to fill properly, particularly when the mix contains aggregate that is too large for the mold. A fine casting mix is generally more suitable for small enclosures, but the correct material depends on the geometry and intended strength.

Expect surface defects

Air bubbles, porous areas, uneven color, and damaged edges can result from:

  • An overly rough or poorly sealed mold
  • Insufficient or excessive release treatment
  • Inconsistent mix proportions
  • Trapped air and inadequate consolidation
  • Premature demolding
  • Uneven curing

Decide early whether the project is meant to display a natural as-cast surface or a refined one. Sanding and sealing can improve usability and stain resistance, but a highly polished finish may conflict with the intended industrial character.

Design service access before pouring

Concrete is unforgiving when a component fails. Include a service strategy from the beginning:

  • Provide a removable rear or underside panel.
  • Use a separate screwed or bonded electronics bracket.
  • Plan access to USB, power, and any switch.
  • Leave wiring service loops rather than pulling cables tight.
  • Make the display window replaceable.
  • Use threaded inserts or captive hardware where repeated access is expected.
  • Keep the SD card or other removable storage accessible if the design requires it.

A removable printed inner carrier is often the best compromise: the concrete provides the exterior identity, while the carrier holds the Pi, sensor, display, and wiring in a maintainable module.

Keep fresh concrete away from electronics

Fresh concrete contains water and is strongly alkaline. Electronics should not be embedded directly in uncured material. Use a physical mold or cavity, allow the enclosure to cure fully, and isolate the electronics from residual moisture. In damp locations, also consider condensation, water ingress, corrosion, and the long-term performance of sealants.

Plan the sensor’s reference frame

The tilt interaction depends on more than connecting an IMU. The software needs a defined “down” direction and a stable relationship between the sensor and the display. A usable implementation may require startup calibration, filtering to reduce jitter, handling for rapid movement, and a fallback if the sensor is disconnected.

  • 【Modern Design】: It is perfect decoration for living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, office, dining room, school or classroom display, and it is an ideal gift for family, frineds, kids or business.

Vibration can be especially troublesome in a heavy enclosure: the body may move slowly while the sensor detects short sharp disturbances. Calibration should be tested with the clock sitting on its intended surface, not only while it is held in the hand.

Protect readability

A pile of falling numerals is visually engaging but not necessarily quick to read. Test the display for color contrast, brightness, viewing angle, font size, and occlusion. After the clock has been tilted, digits may overlap or settle into a configuration that makes the time harder to identify. The visual distinction between hours, minutes, and seconds must remain clear during and after movement.

Concrete compared with other enclosure materials

Criterion Concrete 3D-printed plastic Metal Wood
Weight and stability Excellent Poor to moderate Moderate to excellent Moderate
Ease of modification Poor after casting Excellent Moderate with tools Good
Visual uniqueness Excellent Good Good Excellent
Impact behavior Can chip or crack Often deforms or breaks Can dent or bend Can dent or split
Moisture tolerance Depends on mix and sealer Material-dependent Corrosion-dependent Requires a finish
Heat management Thermal mass, but not automatic ventilation Low thermal mass Often best for spreading heat Low to moderate
Repairability Poor unless designed in Excellent Moderate Good
Portability Poor Excellent Variable Good

Plastic is usually the best material for prototyping because it is light, quick to revise, and easy to open. Metal can provide rigidity and heat spreading, although it may interfere with wireless signals. Wood offers warmth and straightforward fabrication. Concrete wins when the object is intended to feel permanent, sculptural, and stable.

A practical hybrid approach

For a new build, the most robust solution is usually a hybrid enclosure:

  • Concrete outer shell: supplies mass, texture, and visual identity.
  • Printed inner carrier: holds the Raspberry Pi, display, sensor, and wiring.
  • Removable service panel: provides access for repairs and software updates.
  • Protected display recess: prevents the screen from taking direct impact.
  • Rubber feet and strain relief: protect furniture and power connections.

This approach retains the reason to use concrete without forcing every repair to become a demolition project. It also lets the builder prototype the electronics and software in a lightweight plastic enclosure before committing to a final casting.

Where the headline needs correcting

The project demonstrates a compelling use of concrete; it does not prove that concrete is a universally superior enclosure material. The available coverage describes an experimental project rather than comparative engineering tests. There is no evidence here that concrete provides better cooling, impact resistance, electrical safety, radio performance, or long-term reliability than competing materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nor is the clock presented as a turnkey commercial product or a fully reproducible open-source build. The project page lists no complete files, components list, or instructions, and it acknowledges unfinished areas including the casting finish and Raspberry Pi optimization. Readers can reproduce the design idea, but not necessarily the exact object from the published material alone.

Verdict

Concrete is a strong enclosure choice for a stationary electronics object that benefits from weight, permanence, and a distinctive tactile surface. The Concrete Physics Clock is a particularly good match because its heavy body and tilt-driven display make the enclosure part of the experience.

For portable, frequently upgraded, tightly ventilated, or easily repairable equipment, 3D-printed plastic or a hybrid design is more practical. Concrete’s real strength is not universal superiority. It is the ability to turn an enclosure into part of the object’s character—provided the mold, service access, curing, heat management, and protection of the electronics are designed as carefully as the software.
