The gadget is Govee’s TV Backlight 3 Pro: a camera-based RGBWWIC light strip that mounts behind your television and projects changing colors onto the wall. Govee’s U.S. site listed the 55–65-inch version at $179.99 when checked in August 2026; pricing and promotions can change. Check the current product listing before buying.
It does not upgrade your TV’s resolution, HDR hardware, speakers, or panel contrast. What it changes is the room around the screen—and for gamers and viewers who enjoy immersive lighting, that can make the theater feel substantially more enveloping.

What changes when the wall lights up
Without ambient lighting, a television is a bright rectangle surrounded by a dark wall. The Backlight 3 Pro adds a colored halo that extends the visual energy beyond the TV’s borders. A blue landscape can wash the wall in blue; an explosion can produce a rapid burst of warm light; a racing game can make motion feel less confined to the panel.
That effect is subjective, but the reason it can feel transformative is easy to understand: your peripheral vision sees color and movement outside the screen. The television becomes part of the room’s lighting rather than the only bright object in it.
#1 Best Overall
- Softer Lighting Effects for Cooler Accents: Govee LED Strip Lights with Cover are designed with 60 LEDs/m to create softer, uniform, and spot-free lighting effects. Includes an LED Channel, making it ideal for decorative and accent lighting.
- Set Along Inner and Outer Corners: The LED diffuser channel can be applied to skirting lines, ceilings, cabinets, etc. Use the inside and outside corner pieces when applying to inner and outer corners for smoother lighting effects.
- RGBIC Technology: Govee strip lights have 50 customizable segments for personalized color combos. 64 scene modes are ideal for accenting decorations. The endless color selection and party scene modes are great for indoor lighting.
- Smart and Easy Control: Adjust brightness, scene modes, timers, and color temperature in Govee Home App via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This Govee LED lighting strip can also be voice-controlled after pairing with Alexa or Google Assistant.
- Cuttable: Customize the length you need to design your ideal lighting. The LED lights can be cut. Follow the cutting and splicing instructions to ensure the LED strip lights continue functioning. H61B6 only supports up to 10m.
The light can also soften the stark contrast between a bright screen and a completely dark room. It is ambient illumination, not a replacement for carefully calibrated white bias lighting, and it is not automatically better for every film. Start with moderate brightness and sensitivity instead of maximum intensity.
How the Govee TV Backlight 3 Pro works
The system has three main parts:
- A flexible LED strip attached around the rear edges of the TV.
- A camera positioned above the screen.
- A control box and power connection managed through the Govee Home app.
The camera watches the displayed image and the system interprets its colors, sending corresponding effects to different sections of the strip. Because it looks at the final image on the screen, it can react to content from built-in streaming apps, game consoles, disc players, streaming boxes, PCs, and other sources displayed by the TV.
Govee lists an HDR triple-camera system, 1080p/30fps processing, multi-zone calibration, 16-bit RGBWWIC lighting, and DreamView synchronization for the Pro model. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent laboratory measurements; see Govee’s product page for the current details.

What you need before buying
The best results depend as much on the room and installation as on the light strip itself.
- Choose the correct size: Govee lists model H66A0 for 55–65-inch TVs and H66A1 for 75–85-inch TVs.
- Have a nearby wall: The effect is strongest when the TV is wall-mounted or positioned close to a wall. A light, neutral surface usually displays the colors more clearly than a black, heavily textured, or strongly colored wall.
- Check rear access: You need space to attach the strip and route cables.
- Inspect the top of the TV: The camera needs a clear, centered position. It can conflict with a very thin bezel, a built-in sensor, webcam, or soundbar.
- Plan power and cable routing: The control box and power cable need somewhere discreet to go.
- Consider the TV shape: Curved, recessed, unusually thick, or irregularly framed displays may take more effort to calibrate.
Installation and calibration
Exact Govee Home labels can change with app updates, so follow the current instructions supplied with the Pro model. The general process is:
- Clean the rear surface of the television.
- Attach the strip around the TV’s edges with its adhesive and mounting clips.
- Connect the strip to the control box and power supply.
- Place the camera at the top center, aimed squarely at the screen.
- Add the device in the Govee Home app and complete the network setup.
- Run camera calibration using the markers or stickers shown by the app.
- Identify the screen edges and complete any offered color or white-balance calibration.
- Test video mode with a colorful scene.
- Adjust brightness, saturation, sensitivity, and the selected scene mode.
- Remove the calibration markers and secure loose cables.
Calibration is part of the product’s performance, not a minor finishing step. A camera that is off-center, a strip that does not follow the TV edges, or a camera that sees reflections can produce swapped sides, tinted colors, or lights that react to the bezel instead of the image. A general Govee backlight manual illustrates the marker and camera-placement approach, but it is for an earlier model and should not replace the Pro’s current instructions: Govee calibration reference.

It adds immersion without replacing the TV
A backlight can create a noticeable change for far less disruption than replacing a television, receiver, speaker system, or projector. The biggest payoff is usually with colorful films, action scenes, racing games, and games with frequent changes in scenery.

- Slim Gravity-Fit Camera: This camera length is just 90mm, nearly invisible without blocking the screen. Gravity-fit design works with ultra-thin TVs. Govee tv lights upgraded adhesive for super easy installation. Heat-resistant and residue-free
- Faster Color Sync: Dual-chip delivers 132% faster processing with millisecond response. Fast-action scenes and competitive games stay smooth without lag. Strong anti-interference keeps complex light effects stable. Lights track every frame perfectly
It works with the TV’s own apps
This is one of the camera method’s clearest advantages. If Netflix, a streaming service, or another app runs directly on the TV, the camera can still see the resulting picture. You do not have to route every source through a separate synchronization box.
It can serve as ordinary room lighting
When screen matching is not appropriate, static colors, scenes, or music modes let the strip function as decorative lighting. Additional Govee fixtures can potentially be synchronized through the company’s ecosystem.
It is more convincing when the wall and TV placement cooperate
The light needs a surface to illuminate. A television floating far from the wall, blocked by furniture, or installed in a bright room may still produce effects, but the visible payoff will usually be weaker. A close-to-wall installation gives the projected halo more definition.
What it does not do
- It does not increase resolution or frame rate.
- It does not improve the TV’s speakers or soundstage.
- It does not make HDR objectively higher quality.
- It does not improve the panel’s native black levels or contrast.
- It does not replace a projector or a professionally designed bias-lighting system.
- It is not invisible: the camera is mounted above the display and the strip and cables require installation.
Color matching is also an approximation. Results vary with camera position, calibration, reflections, wall distance and color, screen content, room light, and user settings. A review cited by Pocket-lint reported that the Pro was brighter, more responsive, and more accurate than an earlier Govee generation, while also noting that setup and calibration require care. That is a subjective review assessment, not a laboratory accuracy result: read the cited review.

The camera is the central compromise
The camera is what makes the system broadly compatible, but it is also the most important reason not to buy it blindly. It is visible above the screen and observes the screen during reactive operation. That may be unacceptable in a minimalist room or to someone who does not want a camera on the television.
A camera-based system also reacts to what the lens sees. Glare, room lights, reflections, a dirty lens, incorrect angle, and dark scenes can all affect the result. Govee’s current privacy documentation and app behavior should be reviewed if data handling is a deciding factor; do not assume what the camera stores, transmits, or retains. A practical privacy precaution is to disable or unplug the system when it is not in use, accepting that this may remove standby or smart-home functionality.

If the effect looks wrong after setup, work through these steps:
Recommended Free Tools
- Recheck that the camera is centered and aimed at the screen.
- Confirm the strip follows the TV edges in the correct direction.
- Repeat the camera calibration.
- Repeat color or white-balance calibration if the app provides it.
- Reduce direct room light and reflections.
- Clean the camera lens.
- Verify that the selected TV-size profile matches the hardware.
- Update the Govee Home app and device firmware.
- Power-cycle the control box.
- Contact Govee support if the camera or strip is not detected.
For black-and-white films, dark horror, subtle dramas, letterboxed video, or restrained color palettes, reduce brightness and sensitivity—or switch to a static, low-intensity white mode. Active lighting is not an improvement if it pulls attention away from the picture.

How it compares with alternatives
| Option | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Govee TV Backlight 3 Pro | Broad source compatibility and strong immersion per dollar | Visible camera and calibration requirements |
| Govee Envisual TV Backlight T2 | A lower-cost camera-based setup | Older or lower-tier design compared with the Pro |
| Philips Hue Play gradient lightstrip | Existing Hue owners and premium ecosystem users | Requires a Hue Bridge and Sync Box; higher total cost |
| Static white bias light | Privacy, simplicity, and low-cost ambient lighting | No screen-matching color effects |
Govee Envisual TV Backlight T2
Govee’s U.S. store listed the 55–65-inch T2 at $139.99 when checked. It uses a dual-camera design and sits below the Pro in the range. It may be the better value if you want the basic reactive-lighting concept for less and do not specifically need the Pro’s newer camera and processing claims. Check the current T2 listing for availability and price.
Philips Hue Play gradient lightstrip
Philips Hue listed its 55-inch Play gradient lightstrip at $274.99 and the 65-inch version at $296.99 when checked in August 2026. The system requires a Hue Bridge and Hue Sync Box, sold separately. It appeals to buyers already invested in Hue or those who prefer HDMI-based signal synchronization, but the total cost is substantially higher. A Sync Box also means compatibility depends on the connected HDMI sources and TV configuration; built-in TV apps do not behave like external HDMI sources. See the official 55-inch and 65-inch listings.
Static white bias lighting
A simple white LED strip is the sensible choice if your priority is gentle ambient illumination, privacy, low cost, or a reference-style viewing environment. It avoids a camera, calibration, and app dependency, but it cannot create the color-following effect that makes the Govee feel immersive.

The Govee TV Backlight 3 Pro makes the most sense for a 55–65-inch or 75–85-inch TV mounted near a light-colored wall, especially when the household watches colorful content or plays games. It is also a practical choice for people who use built-in TV apps and do not want a separate HDMI synchronization box.
Skip it if you want a completely invisible installation, dislike a camera above the screen, watch mostly understated content, have no useful wall behind the TV, or want laboratory-grade color matching. In those cases, static white bias lighting or a signal-based premium ecosystem may be a better fit.
