It is considered invasive in parts of North America, but local classifications and rules vary. If it is unsuitable where you live, choose a regionally appropriate alternative rather than assuming the tree’s adaptability makes it a good fit.
Check local guidance before choosing the tree
The USDA Forest Service advises: “In North America, land managers should consider its invasive status prior to planting.” The tree can spread and affect understory plants; the University of Maryland Extension recommends against planting it in its service area. That regional advice is not a nationwide legal determination. Check your state, county, or municipal invasive-species guidance and local extension service before buying a tree.
USDA Forest Service, Silvics of North America and University of Maryland Extension offer background on its status and impacts.
Assess soil and moisture
The USDA Forest Service describes Norway maple’s preferred conditions as deep, fertile, moist, well-drained loam, with a preferred soil pH of about 5.5–6.5. The species can also occur in sandy and clay soils, but tolerance does not guarantee good performance at a particular site. The source reports that seedling emergence and survival are lowest in strongly acidic soil below pH 4.5.

- IDEAL FOR WINDBREAKS & PRIVACY SCREENS – With its quick growth and dense foliage, it can be used as a natural visual, wind, and sound barrier. Norway is the fast-growing variety of spruce.
- BEAUTIFUL YEAR-ROUND COLOR– as a conifer, this tree stays green throughout the seasons.
- GREAT FOR LARGE PROJECTS – achieves a mature height of 40’ – 60’ and a mature spread of 25’ – 30’.
- GROWS IN HARDINESS ZONES 3 – 7 – the Norway Spruce is tolerant of various soil types.
Use these figures as guidance for evaluating a site, not as a substitute for local soil conditions or advice. If drainage, moisture, or soil chemistry is a concern, check with a local extension service before planting.
Plan for canopy, shade, and roots
Allow space for a broad canopy and expect dense shade to limit what grows underneath. UConn Extension describes Norway maple roots as shallow, vigorous, and wide-spreading. They compete with turf and understory plants and can damage sidewalks in urban settings.

- We ensure a successful transplant for 30 days if the included planting instructions are followed with the correct location and water. Deciduous plants bought dormant during the winter are expected to leaf out in the spring under the same conditions.
When choosing a spot, consider nearby paving, lawns, planting beds, and other trees. Do not count on grass or shade-loving plants thriving beneath the canopy without checking whether they suit the resulting conditions.
UConn Extension’s guidance on landscape trees discusses root and shade concerns.
Plant nursery stock carefully and support establishment
For ball-and-burlap nursery stock, USDA Forest Service recommendations emphasize setting the root flare at the soil surface, mulching, protecting the trunk and roots from injury, and providing sufficient water while the tree establishes.
- Set the tree so the root flare sits at the soil surface.
- Mulch the planting area while keeping the trunk and roots protected from injury.
- Provide sufficient water during establishment, adjusting care to site conditions.
The Forest Service notes that compost amendments to backfill had only minor benefits in one cited study, so large amounts of compost are not an established requirement.

If local guidance discourages Norway maple, select a replacement according to your region, available space, soil and moisture conditions, hardiness, and desired shade. Alternatives are not interchangeable everywhere, and a tree that is native in one area may not be native or suitable in another.
| Candidate | What the cited guidance supports | What to verify locally |
|---|---|---|
| Red maple | Listed by Maryland Extension as a possible native or non-invasive alternative for rapid growth or shade; UConn Extension also recommends it as a native alternative. | Regional native status, mature size, site fit, and local availability. |
| Sugar maple | UConn Extension recommends it as a native alternative. | Regional suitability, soil and moisture fit, and space. |
| River birch | Listed by Maryland Extension as a possible native or non-invasive alternative for rapid growth or shade. | Regional native status and whether site conditions suit it. |
| Tulip poplar | Listed by Maryland Extension as a possible native or non-invasive alternative for rapid growth or shade. | Regional native status and whether its mature size suits the site. |
| Southern magnolia | Listed by Maryland Extension as a possible native or non-invasive alternative for rapid growth or shade. | Whether climate and site conditions in your region are suitable. |
Maryland Extension’s examples reflect its service area, not a universal planting list. New Hampshire Extension likewise recommends matching a tree to the planting site and cautions that alternatives may not share Norway maple’s broad adaptability. Consult local extension or invasive-species guidance for a location-specific choice.
