Metal corner brackets supplied with some band clamps can dent a project when clamping pressure is excessive. WOOD Magazine’s shop-made alternative uses softwood centers with hardboard or plywood faces to reduce direct contact with the workpiece. It is a practical design, not a guarantee against damage; follow the original illustrations for the bracket’s geometry because the written instructions do not specify every dimension.
Materials and tool
- Softwood 2× stock for the centers
- ⅛-inch hardboard or ¼-inch plywood for the top and bottom pieces
- A 2¼-inch hole saw
These are the construction specifications in WOOD Magazine’s July 26, 2017 shop tip, “These Corner Brackets Won’t Hurt Wood”. The source refers to drawings for the design; use those illustrations for layout rather than assuming dimensions that are not given in the text.
Make the brackets
- Cut the center portions from softwood 2× stock using a 2¼-inch hole saw, following the original article’s illustrations for placement and layout.
- Make the top and bottom pieces from either ⅛-inch hardboard or ¼-inch plywood.
- Adapt the notch angles to the assembly if it has more than four sides. The source says the notches can be cut at different angles, but does not provide angle measurements.
Use them with care
The homemade brackets are an alternative to the metal corner brackets that come with some band clamps. The concern is that too much clamping pressure can dent wood; the shop tip describes its design as gentler, but reports no controlled comparison or measured protection results. Avoid treating the brackets as damage-proof: use pressure appropriate to the glue-up and check that the bracket shape suits the project.
Separate option for clamping blocks
For clamping blocks generally, WOOD Magazine’s “Gluing and Assembly Jigs and Helpers,” updated July 7, 2023, suggests ¾-inch self-adhesive cork pads on block edges to help prevent marring. This is adjacent guidance, not a required component of the corner-bracket design.
