Different houseplants can share a planter when their light, moisture, soil, and nutrient needs are compatible. There is no universal set of eight species that belongs together: choose plants for the conditions in your room, rather than relying on a fixed list. The eight choices below are adaptable categories for building a grouping; check each plant’s care requirements before combining them.
Eight houseplants to consider for a shared planter
These are candidates, not a guaranteed recipe. Pair plants within the same care profile, and verify the needs of the specific species and varieties you buy. A plant’s common name alone may cover varieties with different growth habits or requirements.
- Pothos: Consider it for a grouping where its light and watering needs align with its neighbors. Its trailing growth can spill over a planter’s edge, so allow room for it.
- Philodendron: A candidate for a foliage-focused arrangement when its care needs match the other plants. Account for its mature size and growth habit.
- Spider plant: Its arching leaves can add a different shape to a grouping. Compare its moisture and light requirements with the plants around it.
- Peace lily: Include it only with plants that can share its preferred growing conditions; do not assume it suits a grouping simply because it is a popular indoor plant.
- Chinese evergreen: A foliage option to evaluate against the light available in the chosen spot and the moisture needs of its companions.
- Snake plant: Its care profile may differ from that of plants that prefer consistently moist soil. It can be displayed with other plants in separate inner pots, but that does not make their watering requirements identical.
- Succulent: Use only with neighbors that tolerate its need for the growing medium to dry periodically, or keep it in its own pot within a decorative planter.
- Orchid: Orchids may also need to dry periodically, so assess their needs individually rather than treating them like plants that decline in dry soil.
The list is a starting point, not evidence that all eight can be planted together. NC State Extension’s example of compatible plants is lavender, thyme, and oregano: they suit one container because their requirements for loose medium, dry conditions, and little fertilizer are similar. That principle applies to indoor groupings too: compare care requirements, not just appearance. NC State Extension’s container guidance explains the compatibility rule.
How to choose a compatible combination
Start with the light in the room
Choose the location before the plants. Light is a primary consideration for houseplants, and a mix of low- and high-light plants may not work in the same spot. Check the plants’ light needs and compare them with the actual exposure at the intended location; a decorative grouping cannot compensate for inadequate light. The University of Florida IFAS guidance on indoor gardens discusses light compatibility.

Match moisture needs instead of using one schedule
Do not assume every plant in a shared planter should be watered on the same day. The amount of time soil takes to dry changes with conditions such as light, temperature, humidity, container type, and plant growth. Some succulents and orchids need to dry periodically, while other plants decline when their soil dries out. Check the plants and their growing medium as conditions change rather than following a fixed weekly routine.
Compare soil, drainage, and nutrients
Plants sharing a container also share its growing medium. Check whether their soil and drainage needs are compatible, and whether their nutrient requirements align. For an indoor garden, UF/IFAS recommends an indoor-plant mix and a large, shallow planter with a saucer. Illinois Extension notes that drainage holes are best for most plants. These choices support a suitable setup, but they do not make incompatible plant needs compatible. See Illinois Extension’s container-garden plant guidance.

Allow for mature size and growth
Plants that look balanced at purchase can compete for space as they grow. Consider mature size, growth rate, and proportion before combining them. Leave room for foliage and roots, and avoid crowding plants simply to fill a container.
Set up the arrangement without forcing a shared watering routine
- Choose the location. Assess the light available where the planter will sit, then select plants suited to that exposure.
- Compare care requirements. Check each plant’s light, watering, soil, and nutrient needs. If they conflict, choose a different companion or keep the plants in separate pots.
- Select the container and medium. Use a container sized for the arrangement, with drainage suited to the plants and a saucer to catch excess water. Use indoor-plant mix when appropriate.
- Leave room for growth. Consider the mature size and shape of each plant rather than arranging only for its appearance on planting day.
- Observe and adjust. Watch how quickly the medium dries and how the plants respond as room conditions and growth change.
For plants with different moisture needs, UF/IFAS describes partially submerging the drier plant’s own pot inside a wetter arrangement so it can be watered less often. The guidance describes this approach for short-term groupings in nurseries and florist shops; it is not proof that plants with conflicting needs are suitable for permanent planting together. Separate inner pots also make it easier to remove a plant for watering or care.

Signs the grouping needs attention
Inadequate light or water can stress plants, and stressed plants may become more susceptible to pests and diseases, according to UGA Cooperative Extension’s guidance on mixed containers. If the plants are not doing well, reassess whether the location, moisture, soil, or spacing suits each one rather than adding water or fertilizer to the whole arrangement automatically.
