There is no transparent, independently verified ranking of the world’s ten most expensive private car collections. The Sultan of Brunei is frequently named as the owner of the most valuable, but even widely repeated reports disagree about the collection’s size and describe its value as an estimate. Auction totals offer firmer numbers, but they measure cars sold in a particular event—not the value of an owner’s entire garage.
Why a “top 10” ranking is difficult to verify
“Car garage” is often used to mean a collection of cars rather than a building. But the figures commonly placed side by side refer to different things: estimates of a private collection’s total value, proceeds from auctioning a group of cars, sales across multiple auctions, or the price paid for one vehicle. Those are not interchangeable measures.
The available reports do not establish a common appraisal method or a current, audited top-ten list of private collections. A meaningful comparison would need consistent valuations, dates, currencies and confirmed inventories. Without those, ranking ten collections would imply a level of certainty the evidence does not support.
The Sultan of Brunei: the collection most often named
A 2024 article from Sotheby’s International Realty UK attributes estimates of 7,000 cars and more than $5 billion in value to the collection of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. The same article notes that some sources claim the collection has 2,400 cars instead. These are conflicting secondary estimates, not a verified inventory or independent appraisal: Sotheby’s International Realty UK’s 2024 account.

The Sultan is therefore frequently named when people ask who owns the world’s most expensive car collection, but the reported scale and value should not be treated as established facts. The available figures are insufficient to confirm either the total value or a precise rank among private collections.
What documented auction results can tell us
Auction results give a concrete record of what buyers paid for a defined group of cars. They are useful benchmarks for exceptional vehicles, but they do not establish the value of a complete private collection.

Both results are reported by RM Sotheby’s. They show the scale that carefully assembled car sales can reach, while also illustrating why auction proceeds should not be presented as an owner’s collection valuation.
A record price for one car is not a collection valuation
In 2022, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold for €135 million, according to RM Sotheby’s and Mercedes-Benz. The car came from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Collection. That price is a landmark for an individual vehicle; it does not indicate the total value of a private collection, nor does it turn the institutional collection into a privately owned garage.

Notable collectors without comparable public totals
Jay Leno and Ralph Lauren are among the collectors named in reporting on notable personal car collections. The available material does not establish current, comparable valuations for either collection, so assigning them precise totals or placing them in a defensible numerical ranking would be misleading. A list that fills out ten slots with unsupported estimates would look precise without being reliable.

Is there a verified top-ten ranking of the world’s most expensive car collections?
No comparable, independently verified ranking of ten private collections is established by the cited sources. Reported private-collection estimates, auction proceeds and individual car prices measure different things.
