Airport-Compatible Luggage Locks: How to Choose One for Your Bag

Airport-compatible locks help authorized screeners inspect checked bags, but they are not theft-proof. Compare verified features and check the fit before choosing.

There is no evidence here to support a tested ranking of the “10 most secure” luggage locks. Airport-compatible locks solve a narrower problem: they let authorized screeners inspect and relock checked baggage without removing the lock. That access is not a theft-proof rating. Choose a lock for the inspection system you need, how it fits your zipper pulls, and the features you will actually use.

What an airport-compatible lock does—and does not do

Travel Sentry says its approved locks are designed to let authorized airport security open, inspect, and relock a bag with the system’s access tools. The red diamond is the mark Travel Sentry uses to identify its approved locks. The organization describes these locks as a way to deter unauthorized tampering, but cautions that no travel lock can guarantee protection against determined theft. Travel Sentry’s FAQ puts the distinction plainly: “These locks provide a reliable level of security for travellers, but it is important to understand their purpose.”

Airport inspection access and theft resistance are different things. The sources do not provide comparable independent tests of these models for picking, cutting, bypass, or forced-entry resistance. The examples below are therefore a feature-based comparison, not a security ranking.

How to identify a lock that screeners can open

Check the mark on the exact lock rather than relying only on packaging or a product category description. Travel Sentry identifies its accepted locks with a red diamond. Safe Skies uses a separate red torch mark; do not treat the two marks as interchangeable without confirming which system applies to the lock and your travel needs.

Forge TSA Approved Luggage Locks, Open Alert Cable Lock, Black, 4 Pack
  • MOST DURABLE TSA RECOGNIZED AND ACCEPTED TSA LOCK. Forge TSA approved luggage locks are designed from the ground up to be the toughest luggage locks around. Our special alloy lock bodies, tightly braided and sheathed steel cables, hardened steel cable lock ends as well as patented internal mechanisms can take such a pounding that we back our product up with an unconditional lifetime guarantee. If you can find a way to break these locks, we’ll gladly refund or replace them.
  • EASY TO SET 3 DIGIT COMBINATION. Our tsa locks have an easy to use lever mechanism to set the combination. Simply set the locks to the factory default combination of 0-0-0, flip the lever with a pen and enter your personal combination. The combination can also be changed as many times as you like. Never worry about accidently changing your lock to the wrong combination or your combination being changed during rough handling.
  • SECURITY WITH THE FLEXIBILITY OF A CABLE LOCK. Cable locks can handle situations that normal lock shackles simply can’t. Our lock’s cable is thin enough to thread through all standard sized zippers and hard case lock holes but strong enough to protect your belongings. At a length of 4 in from end to end and an internal looped length of 1.5 in when locked, our cable offers the flexibility to secure nearly any suitcase, hard case, gun case, etc. on the market.
  • ALWAYS RELOCKED, ALWAYS PROTECTED. Most TSA locks on the market do not need to be re-locked by a TSA agent after their inspection is completed. With our TSA luggage lock, the agent has to re-lock your suitcase to remove their key. With Forge you never worry about your suitcase locks being left open again.
  • MANY USES WITH LOTS OF VARIETY. Forge travel locks can be used on a wide variety of items besides suitcases or luggage. These locks can be used on a briefcase, gym locker, purse, backpack or laptop bag.

Travel Sentry says a TSA lock is not legally required. However, if officers need to inspect checked baggage secured with a non-approved lock, they may cut, break, or remove it. The U.S. Antarctic Program also explains that TSA may break locks during checked-baggage inspection and describes Travel Sentry locks as openable and relockable by screeners. TSA’s guidance on locks is another place to check current advice.

Model or option Published details Useful when What the information does not establish
Pacsafe Prosafe 800 Travel Sentry Approved combination cable padlock; 10 cm / 4 in high-tensile stainless-steel cable; resettable three-dial combination; zinc-alloy body, according to Pacsafe. You need a flexible cable to pass through zipper pulls that are awkwardly aligned. Its published materials do not establish a comparative independent theft-resistance rating.
ABUS 147TSA Three-digit resettable combination lock with a plastic body and a visible indicator that signals the lock was opened using a TSA key. ABUS describes it as suitable for luggage and lower-value goods. You want a resettable combination and a visual indication of screeners’ access. The maker’s description does not establish resistance to a determined attack.
Safe Skies TSA locks Safe Skies describes its locks as recognized by named security agencies, offers multiple styles and colors, and states that its locks have a lifetime warranty. You want to compare its different lock styles or colors. These are manufacturer claims; verify the mark and the warranty terms for the particular model and market. No single model’s specifications are established here.
Lockable straps or built-in suitcase locks NBC Select’s older guide identifies both as alternatives to external padlocks. You prefer a strap or a lock integrated into the suitcase rather than a separate padlock. The guide’s dated prices and recommendations are not current buying evidence, and it does not establish comparative attack resistance.

Choose the shackle for your zipper pulls

A lock that cannot pass through the bag’s zipper pulls—or closes only under strain—is the wrong fit. Flexible cable models can accommodate pulls that do not line up neatly. Rigid shackles can work well when the pulls align, but may be harder to attach. A specialist comparison discusses this practical trade-off, but it is publisher analysis rather than independent laboratory testing. See the comparison’s discussion of cable and rigid shackles.

  • Thread the shackle through the actual zipper pulls you intend to secure.
  • Close the lock without forcing the pulls together or bending the shackle.
  • Check that the lock does not obstruct the zipper slider or a built-in locking point.
  • If you choose a combination lock, learn how to set and open it before travel.

What a “top 10” security ranking would require

A defensible ranking of the most secure locks would need comparable testing across models—for example, consistent methods for assessing picking, cutting, bypass, and forced entry. The available product details and publisher comparisons do not provide that evidence. No suitable named, independently published statistic comparing luggage-lock security is established here either, so passenger-screening totals or airport counts would not answer which lock is safer.

For a practical choice, treat accepted inspection access as one feature, not a measure of theft resistance. Compare the exact model’s approval mark, fit, shackle design, combination or key features, and model-specific warranty terms. A lock can deter casual interference, but it cannot guarantee that a determined thief will not get into a bag.
