Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compact size does not guarantee room-scale performance. The best small dehumidifier depends on whether you need to control moisture in a closet, RV compartment, cabinet, or other tiny enclosure—or remove meaningful amounts of water from an entire room. In the tested group, the ProBreeze PB-030 is the best compact choice, the ProBreeze PB-020 is the budget pick for especially small spaces, and the Waykar PD160B is the better choice when “small” still needs to mean capable of treating a room.
These rankings and test results come from RTINGS’ small-dehumidifier testing, not independent testing by this site. RTINGS says it purchased models from major retailers and evaluated airflow, moisture-removal capacity, and related performance factors, while also considering size and price for its small-dehumidifier recommendations.
The three winners at a glance
| Pick | Best for | Technology | What the testing favors | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ProBreeze PB-030 | A bedroom in an RV, closet, bedside area, or other genuinely small enclosure | Thermoelectric/Peltier | Compact dimensions, quiet operation, low power use, and minimal heat output | Very limited moisture-removal capacity compared with a compressor unit |
| ProBreeze PB-020 | A cabinet, very small closet, RV compartment, or similarly tiny area | Thermoelectric/Peltier | Lower purchase cost and an even smaller footprint | RTINGS reports that it removes moisture substantially more slowly than the PB-030 |
| Waykar PD160B | A larger room where a countertop model is not capable enough | Compressor | Far stronger room-scale moisture removal than the thermoelectric models | Larger, heavier, louder, and more power-demanding than a mini unit |
If you need a quick decision: choose the PB-030 for localized dampness with low noise and little added heat, the PB-020 only when price and size matter more than speed, and the PD160B when the unit must actually dry a room.

1. Best compact small dehumidifier: ProBreeze PB-030
The ProBreeze PB-030 is the strongest choice when the defining requirement is genuinely compact, quiet, low-heat moisture control. RTINGS identifies it as a thermoelectric/Peltier dehumidifier and gives it particularly favorable relative results for bedroom suitability, noise, and temperature stability. Those characteristics make it more appropriate for a small enclosed area than a conventional compressor machine.
Typical use cases include a closet with recurring condensation, a small RV sleeping or storage area, a cabinet where dampness is localized, or a bedside position where noise and heat would be irritating. A retailer listing identifies the U.S. version as PB-03-US and describes it for spaces up to 250 square feet, but that coverage statement should not be read as proof of fast, room-scale drying. RTINGS’ testing indicates that the thermoelectric class has limited capacity compared with conventional compressor dehumidifiers.

The PB-030 has automatic shutoff when its small tank fills. That is useful in an unattended closet or RV compartment, although it means the unit stops removing moisture until the tank is emptied. If you are considering a ProBreeze PB-030, treat it as a localized-dampness solution rather than a substitute for a full-size basement or bedroom dehumidifier.
Choose the PB-030 if:
- You have a small, enclosed area rather than a damp whole floor or basement.
- Quiet operation matters, such as in a sleeping area.
- You want to minimize added heat and power draw.
- You can tolerate slower moisture removal and periodic tank emptying.
Do not choose it if:
- The room has persistent high humidity, water intrusion, or visible condensation across multiple surfaces.
- You expect it to dry a normal-size bedroom quickly.
- You need continuous drainage or a large water-removal capacity.
2. Best budget small dehumidifier: ProBreeze PB-020
The ProBreeze PB-020 is the budget recommendation for a very small space. It is cheaper and more compact than the PB-030, and its automatic shutoff helps prevent overflow when the tank is full. That combination can make sense for a cabinet, small closet, RV compartment, or another restricted area where the appliance itself must occupy very little space.
The important qualification is performance. RTINGS reports that the PB-020 is almost four times slower than the PB-030 at reducing moisture in an equivalent space. It should therefore be regarded as a low-cost localized option—not as a practical way to control humidity throughout an ordinary bedroom, apartment, basement, or living area.
North American product and warranty materials identify the PB-02 family as a mini dehumidifier, but regional model suffixes can vary. Check that the exact version is compatible with your voltage, retailer, and warranty region before buying a ProBreeze PB-020.
Choose the PB-020 if:
- The space is truly tiny and the lowest purchase cost is the priority.
- You are addressing a small enclosed moisture pocket rather than a building-wide humidity problem.
- You accept slower results and frequent tank checks.
For any room large enough that people regularly occupy it, compare the PB-020 with a compressor-based model instead of assuming that a lower price makes it better value. A unit that cannot remove moisture at the required rate may run continuously while the room remains damp.
3. Best small whole-room dehumidifier: Waykar PD160B
The Waykar PD160B is the appropriate winner when “small” means a relatively compact portable room unit—not a desktop appliance. RTINGS places it well ahead of the thermoelectric countertop models for room-scale moisture removal. Its compressor design is less suited to a bedside table, but it is much better equipped for a larger bedroom, workshop, utility room, or other space with a meaningful moisture load.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Waykar lists a headline capacity of 34 pints per day under conditions of 95°F and 90% relative humidity. The product page also specifies coverage of up to 2,000 square feet, a 0.66-gallon tank, adjustable humidity settings from 30% to 80%, gravity drainage, automatic defrost, wheels, a timer, and a washable filter. Manufacturer coverage figures are not a guarantee that the unit will maintain a target humidity in every building; insulation, air leakage, moisture sources, temperature, and starting humidity all matter.
The PD160B is also listed in the official ENERGY STAR product record. That record gives it a capacity of 9.81 pints per day under the DOE Appendix X1 test condition and an integrated energy factor of 1.73 liters per kilowatt-hour. The 34-pint and 9.81-pint figures are not a simple contradiction: they come from different test conditions. The manufacturer’s headline figure uses much warmer, more humid air, while the current DOE/ENERGY STAR procedure uses cooler conditions intended to better represent portable dehumidifier operation, including basement use.
Choose the PD160B if:
- You need to lower humidity across a room rather than inside a cabinet or closet.
- A compressor unit’s greater capacity is more important than minimal noise, heat, or power use.
- You want the option of bucket operation or gravity-fed continuous drainage.
- You need wheels and a portable floor-standing design.
Remember that a “whole-room” pick is not the same as a commercial restoration machine. If a room has active leaks, flooding, saturated materials, or severe building-envelope problems, address the moisture source and use appropriately rated remediation equipment.

Why tiny thermoelectric units and compressor units are not interchangeable
Thermoelectric dehumidifiers use a Peltier element to create a cold surface where moisture can condense. Their advantages are compactness, relatively quiet operation, low heat output, and generally modest power demand. Their trade-off is limited moisture-removal capacity.
Recommended Free Tools
Compressor dehumidifiers move air over a refrigerated coil and are physically larger, but they can remove substantially more water from room air. They may produce more operating noise and heat, occupy floor space, and consume more electricity. The testing summarized by RTINGS shows why the distinction matters: the PB-030 and PB-020 are useful for localized moisture, while the Waykar PD160B is the room-capable choice in this group.
Do not select a mini unit simply because its marketing lists a large square-footage figure. Match the appliance’s real moisture-removal performance to the wetness of the space and the consequences of undersizing.
How to size a small dehumidifier
Room area is only one part of sizing. A slightly damp, enclosed room needs less capacity than a very damp room with condensation, poor ventilation, wet materials, or ongoing moisture migration. ENERGY STAR’s sizing guidance recommends moving into higher pint-per-day ranges as conditions progress from slightly damp to very damp or wet, and generally favors oversizing rather than undersizing.
- Identify the space. Is the appliance for a cabinet, closet, RV compartment, bedroom, workshop, basement, or an open connected area?
- Assess the moisture condition. Look for condensation on windows or pipes, musty odors, damp materials, staining, or humidity that remains high after ventilation.
- Consider temperature. Cooler spaces affect compressor performance and may require automatic defrost. The PD160B includes auto defrost, but no portable unit eliminates the need to consider the room’s conditions.
- Prefer excess capacity over a borderline fit. An undersized dehumidifier may run for long periods without reaching the desired humidity.
- Check drainage before installation. A small tank can fill quickly in a wet room, making continuous drainage more convenient than manual emptying.
The PB-020 and PB-030 belong in the first category: small, localized spaces. The PD160B belongs in the second: a room where the appliance needs substantially greater capacity. Neither category should be treated as a universal answer for every “small” room.

Use a hygrometer to verify whether the unit is working
A dehumidifier’s setting is not the same thing as an independent measurement of room humidity. ENERGY STAR recommends using a separate hygrometer when a unit lacks a useful relative-humidity display or when you want to verify its reading. A digital hygrometer or indoor humidity monitor can show whether humidity is actually falling at the location that matters.
ENERGY STAR generally identifies 30% to 50% relative humidity as the preferred indoor range. In cold climates during winter, a lower target may sometimes be appropriate to reduce window condensation. Avoid chasing an unnecessarily low reading: over-dry air can create its own comfort and material problems.
Place the monitor away from the dehumidifier’s exhaust, direct sunlight, heating vents, exterior doors, and obvious drafts. Let it stabilize, then compare readings before and after the dehumidifier has operated for several hours. If humidity does not fall, check that the tank is seated, the air filter is clean, doors and windows are reasonably closed, and the building does not have an active moisture source overwhelming the appliance.

Bucket versus continuous drainage
All three recommendations use a collection tank with automatic shutoff, but the practical consequences differ. Mini units have small tanks and may stop quickly in a damp enclosure. The Waykar PD160B adds gravity-drain support, allowing water to flow through a hose to a suitable floor drain or other approved drainage point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsENERGY STAR notes that drain hoses must be routed safely away from electrical connections and trip hazards. The hose should have a continuous downward path; a gravity drain cannot push water uphill. Before purchasing a dehumidifier drain hose, verify the connector size, required length, and compatibility with the exact model. Do not route water where it can discharge onto flooring, wiring, insulation, or building components.
Filter care
The PD160B has a washable filter. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and drying instructions, because a clogged filter restricts airflow and can reduce moisture removal. Owners who need a Waykar PD160B replacement filter or another replacement dehumidifier filter should verify exact model compatibility rather than assuming that filters are universal.
Do not treat the appliance as a mold cure
A dehumidifier can reduce one condition that supports mold growth, but it does not repair leaks, dry hidden cavities, replace damaged materials, or remove established contamination by itself. Investigate roof and plumbing leaks, ground moisture, condensation, drainage, ventilation, and air leakage. Wet construction materials may require targeted drying, removal, or professional assessment.

Which winner should you buy?
Choose the ProBreeze PB-030
when your priority is a quiet, low-heat, compact appliance for a closet, RV, bedside area, or similarly small enclosure—and you accept limited capacity.
Choose the ProBreeze PB-020
when the space is exceptionally small and price and footprint matter more than speed. It is the weakest performer of the three and should not be used as a whole-room solution.
Choose the Waykar PD160B
when you need a compressor-based unit for a larger room, want stronger moisture removal, or need the option of gravity drainage. Expect a larger appliance and do not compare its manufacturer capacity directly with its ENERGY STAR capacity without noting the different test procedures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the ProBreeze PB-030 and PB-020 suitable for a whole bedroom?
They are better suited to localized moisture in a closet, RV compartment, cabinet, or genuinely small enclosure. RTINGS reports much lower capacity than conventional compressor dehumidifiers; the PB-020 is also almost four times slower than the PB-030 in the cited equivalent-space test.
Why does the Waykar PD160B have both a 34-pint and a 9.81-pint rating?
The figures use different test conditions. Waykar’s 34-pint headline figure is measured at 95°F and 90% relative humidity, while the ENERGY STAR record lists 9.81 pints per day under the DOE Appendix X1 test condition. Capacity ratings should be compared only when the test procedures and conditions match.

ENERGY STAR generally identifies 30% to 50% relative humidity as a preferred indoor range. A lower winter target may be appropriate in cold climates to reduce window condensation. Use a separate hygrometer to verify actual humidity rather than relying only on the appliance setting.
Can a small dehumidifier prevent mold?
It can help reduce humidity, but it cannot by itself fix leaks, dry hidden building cavities, or remove established mold. Find and correct the moisture source and assess wet or contaminated construction materials separately.
The Bottom Line
The right winner depends on what “small” means in your project. The ProBreeze PB-030 is the best compact and quiet option for localized dampness; the PB-020 is a cheaper choice for an exceptionally tiny space but is notably slower; and the Waykar PD160B is the clear choice when a portable unit must remove moisture from a room. Confirm the actual humidity with a hygrometer, plan drainage safely, and investigate leaks or other moisture sources instead of expecting the appliance to solve a building problem on its own.
