Kudzu remains established across much of the eastern United States, especially the Southeast, where it can smother vegetation and weigh down trees. The often-repeated acreage figures are dated estimates, not a current national census, and climate-related spread farther north is a possibility—not a measured certainty.
How kudzu became established in the United States
The kudzu discussed here is Pueraria montana var. lobata, a vine native to China. The U.S. Forest Service says it was brought to the United States from Japan in the late 1800s; its history source records its display at Philadelphia’s Centennial Exposition in 1876. It was promoted at different times as an ornamental, forage plant, and erosion-control measure. No single use explains its subsequent spread. The Forest Service’s Fire Effects Information System review summarizes its history and ecology.
Where kudzu is found today—and what acreage estimates mean
The Forest Service review describes kudzu across much of the eastern United States, from parts of the Midwest and Northeast south to Florida and Texas, as well as Hawaii. It identifies the Southeast as the region where the plant is most invasive. Because the review and its state-by-state references are older, they are a broad distribution guide, not a live map.
| Figure | What the source says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nearly 8 million acres | USDA Agricultural Research Service, FY 2019 accomplishment page: kudzu was infesting nearly 8 million acres, much of it in commercially owned forests. Source | An agency estimate reported in 2019, not a 2026 census. |
| 7 million acres | The Forest Service review cites this estimate for the Southeast. Source | An older regional estimate, not a current national total. |
| 8 million acres and 150,000 acres per year | A 2009 USDA ARS article repeats these figures. Source | Dated claims; the annual rate should not be treated as a verified current spread rate. |
These figures describe different sources, dates, and geographies. They should not be combined into a single current count. The sources cited here do not establish a current nationwide acreage census.

- DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Made from high-strength manganese steel, this garden shears offers excellent sharpness and hardness. The rough surface texture doesn't compromise performance, ensuring long-lasting use and high impact resistance.
- EXQUISITE CRAFTSMANSHIP: The TPR rubberized handle of this weeder tool is anti-slip, and makes it very comfortable to hold. The metal head also adopts advanced welding technology, with solid welding points, which makes it very delicate to look at as a whole.
- MORE EFFORTLESS WEEDING : With a reasonable tooth angle and an extended handle, this garden weeding tool allows you to remove weeds easily and comfortably. The ergonomic design of the handle also prevents hand fatigue and strain.
- WIDE APPLICATION: This manual weeder allows you to easily remove all kinds of weeds from your garden, whether they are deep-rooted or surface-level. It is also multifunctional, as you can use it for horticultural planting, digging and cuttings.
Why kudzu can damage habitats and trees
Kudzu grows over other plants, forming dense stands that block light and can dominate a site. The Forest Service review says it can outcompete native plants, alter plant communities, and hinder forest regeneration. Where vines cover trees, reduced light can weaken shade-intolerant trees; the accumulated vine weight can also pull trees down. Effects vary with the site and the history of an infestation.
Covering the ground does not necessarily prevent erosion. USDA ARS plant pathologist Mark A. Weaver, of the Biological Control of Pests Research Unit in Stoneville, Mississippi, put it this way: “Gullies still form underneath kudzu. You just can’t see them,” ARS AgResearch Magazine, 2016.

USDA ARS’s FY 2019 summary also identifies kudzu as a carrier of Asian soybean rust, a disease that can damage soybeans, and says kudzu can increase nitrous oxide emissions. These are agency-reported concerns, not a claim that every kudzu patch causes the same effects. USDA ARS, FY 2019.
Could kudzu spread farther north?
It could, but that is a risk rather than an established nationwide trend. USDA ARS’s FY 2019 summary says invasion and impact may expand northward with climate change. A USDA-hosted summary of research published in 2018 reports that kudzu’s cold tolerance varies by season and concludes that the vine may survive north of its current range if people disperse it. The study supports the possibility of northward range expansion; it does not show that climate change has already produced a measured national advance. USDA ARS summary of the 2018 study.

What it takes to control an established infestation
Control may mean suppressing growth or attempting eradication; those are different goals. The Forest Service review describes herbicides as one possible effective method, alone or combined with other tactics. Root crowns and stored reserves can fuel regrowth, so one application is not a reliable eradication plan. Repeat spot treatments may be needed for several years, and some sites require ten or more years of monitoring and follow-up.
USDA ARS reported in 2016 that persistent herbicide applications typically take about ten years to eradicate kudzu. That is a general estimate, not a guaranteed schedule for a particular property. ARS also reported that combined control programs can suppress kudzu faster than individual methods. Site conditions, infestation age, treatment choice, and follow-up affect the work and timeline. USDA ARS, July 13, 2016.

Factors to weigh before choosing a control approach
- Goal: Decide whether the immediate aim is to limit spread and protect nearby land or to pursue eradication.
- Site: Consider the infestation’s size and age, nearby desirable plants, and the property’s intended use.
- Treatment: If using a herbicide, choose a product labeled for the intended kudzu-control use and follow its label and local requirements. The cited sources do not establish one best treatment for every site.
- Follow-up: Plan for repeat treatment and monitoring rather than assuming the vines are gone after one visible dieback.
For a substantial infestation, a local invasive-plant or land-management professional may help assess the site and develop a follow-up plan.

Kudzu has historical uses, including as forage, and the Forest Service review describes potential value as livestock feed. That history is not a recommendation to plant it: the same review says kudzu is not recommended for cultivation for any purpose because it is an invasive pest plant in the South.
