The Ultimate Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Rug for Every Room

Choose a rug by the furniture and activity it anchors—not room dimensions alone. This room-by-room guide covers rug sizes, furniture layouts, chair clearance, runners, pads, doors, and floor compatibility.

The right rug size is determined by the furniture or activity it anchors—not by room dimensions alone. In a living room, the rug should connect the seating group. In a dining room, it should leave enough room for pulled-out chairs. In a bedroom, size it from the bed and the desired landing zones. For hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms, prioritize clearances, door swings, cabinets, and safe foot traffic.

Before ordering, outline the proposed rug with painter’s tape, test every door and drawer, and compare the taped footprint with the product’s actual measurements. Common labels such as 5×7, 8×10, and 9×12 are useful shopping categories, but they are not guarantees that every rug measures exactly that size.

Quick rug-size decisions by room

Room or use Measure first Main sizing rule
Living room The complete seating group At minimum, place the front legs of every major seating piece on the rug.
Dining room The table plus chairs pulled out Add at least 24 inches beyond the table on every side; 36 inches is more generous.
Bedroom The bed, nightstands, bench, and walkways Common starting points are 8×10 for a queen and 9×12 for a king in a lower-two-thirds layout.
Hallway The narrowest clear width and usable length Leave approximately 4–6 inches of floor at each side and about 6 inches at each end.
Kitchen The sink, island, cabinets, and appliance doors Cover the standing and prep zone without blocking cabinets or appliances.
Bathroom The vanity, tub or shower exit, fixtures, and door Choose a mat for the wet-foot path or a rug for a larger dry area.
Home office The desk plus the chair’s full rolling zone The chair should remain on the rug when pulled away from the desk.
Outdoor dining The table plus chairs in use Allow approximately 24–30 inches beyond the furniture when chairs must move.

These are starting points, not fixed design rules. The correct size is the largest readily available option that satisfies safety, furniture connection, circulation, and room-proportion requirements.

Common room uses and size categories are summarized in guides from Home Depot, Rugs Direct, and other major retailers. A nominal 8×10 rug may have slightly different actual dimensions, especially if it is handmade, hand-knotted, fringed, or irregularly shaped. Check the product page and exclude fringe when determining the usable footprint or ordering a rug pad. Handmade-rug sizing guidance also warns that catalog labels may not match the final measured rug exactly.

How to measure before buying

Do not estimate from the room’s wall-to-wall dimensions unless the rug is intended to cover nearly the entire room. Use the actual furniture arrangement instead.

  1. Place the furniture where it will actually live. Include the sofa, chairs, dining table, bed, nightstands, bench, desk, or island stools.
  2. Choose the placement mode. Decide whether all legs, front legs, or only the coffee table will sit on the rug. For bedrooms, decide whether the rug will cover the lower two-thirds of the bed or include the nightstands.
  3. Outline the rug with painter’s tape. Mark the full proposed footprint, including the direction in which a rectangular rug will run.
  4. Walk the perimeter. Make sure the taped edge does not narrow a main walkway or create an awkward pinch point.
  5. Pull out dining chairs. Test the chairs as if someone were sitting down, not just when they are pushed beneath the table.
  6. Open every nearby door. Test entry, closet, bathroom, cabinet, oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, and appliance doors.
  7. Check fixed obstructions. Account for floor vents, registers, fireplace hearths, thresholds, steps, radiators, built-ins, and changes in flooring.
  8. Measure the tape. Compare the footprint with the exact product dimensions, not only the nominal size.
  9. Test the next size up and down. If the choice is close, tape both options. This often reveals whether the larger rug improves the furniture connection or creates an operational problem.

The temporary-outline method is also recommended by Wayfair’s rug-sizing guide. It is particularly valuable in construction or renovation projects, where a few inches can determine whether a rug clears a door, register, or built-in cabinet.

Useful sizing formulas

  • Living room: rug width = seating-group width + the desired side overhang; rug length = seating-group length + the desired front and back overhang.
  • Dining room: rug length = table length + 48–72 inches; rug width = table width + 48–72 inches. This provides 24–36 inches of rug beyond each side.
  • Runner width: usable passage width − approximately 8–12 inches. This leaves about 4–6 inches of exposed floor at each side.
  • Runner length: usable path length − approximately 12 inches. This leaves about 6 inches at each end, subject to door and threshold clearances.
  • Rug pad: ordinary pad length and width = actual rug dimensions minus approximately 2 inches total—about 1 inch inset on every side.

Living-room rug sizes and layouts

The living-room rug should anchor the seating conversation area, not simply sit in the geometric center of the room. A 5×7 can be appropriate in a compact apartment, while a 9×12 or 10×14 may be necessary for a large sectional or open-plan space.

Layout 1: All furniture legs on the rug

This is the most complete and visually unified arrangement. The rug accommodates the sofa, chairs, coffee table, and other furniture that belongs to the seating group. It works especially well when furniture floats away from the walls, in a large room, or in an open-plan area.

Typical starting points are:

  • 5×7 or 5×8: compact seating arrangement or small apartment
  • 6×9: smaller seating group
  • 8×10: medium room or three-seat sofa
  • 9×12: large room or sectional
  • 10×14 or larger: generous great room, large sectional, or open-plan zone

These are shopping starting points, not furniture-sizing laws. The rug should be large enough that furniture does not straddle its edge precariously.

Layout 2: Front legs on the rug

This is often the best solution when the sofa or chairs sit against a wall. Place the front legs of every major seating piece on the rug so the furniture reads as one connected group. Avoid placing only one sofa leg or only the coffee table on the rug while the chairs float entirely outside it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this arrangement when the room cannot accommodate all furniture on the rug, when the sofa backs against a wall, or when budget favors a smaller size. The rug does not need to touch every wall; it needs to connect the furniture that belongs to the same conversation zone.

Layout 3: Coffee table only

A coffee-table-only rug can work in a very small room, but it should have enough visual weight to relate to the surrounding seating. A tiny rug that merely fits beneath the table often creates a disconnected “postage-stamp” effect. If the seating cannot reach the rug, either choose a larger option or make the coffee-table-only arrangement an intentional small-space solution.

Living-room details that change the size

  • Sectionals: Orient the rug so the long side and chaise do not create an awkward partial edge. A larger rug is usually easier to balance.
  • Open plans: Center the rug on the seating zone, not mathematically on the entire floor. A separate dining rug may define the neighboring zone more effectively than one enormous rug.
  • Fireplaces: Measure the hearth depth and raised edge. Do not assume the rug can safely run over or against the hearth.
  • TV consoles: Decide whether the console is part of the seating group. The rug should not stop in a way that makes the console appear unrelated or unstable.
  • Furniture against different walls: Connect the pieces that function together rather than forcing the rug to touch every wall.
  • Uneven edges: If the edge runs under only part of a deep sofa, sideboard, or cabinet, check that the furniture remains stable. An edge under only one portion may require repositioning or shimming; Pottery Barn’s furniture-placement guidance highlights this issue.

Dining-room rug sizes

Measure from the table outward. The rug must remain beneath the chairs when they are pulled back for sitting. A rug that fits the table but drops the rear chair legs onto bare flooring is too small.

The practical formula is:

Rug length = table length + 48–72 inches
Rug width = table width + 48–72 inches

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The lower end provides 24 inches beyond the table on each side. The upper end provides approximately 36 inches and is more comfortable for wide chairs, armchairs, or generous circulation. Pottery Barn recommends measuring with chairs pulled out, while Wayfair summarizes the 24-inch minimum approach.

Dining-room examples

Table footprint Minimum footprint with 24-inch clearance Practical stock-size direction
36×60 in rectangular 84×108 in 7×9 minimum mathematically; 8×10 is often easier to find
42×72 in rectangular 90×120 in 8×10
42×96 in rectangular 90×144 in 8×12, 9×12, or custom
60-in round 108-in round 9-ft round for a conservative 24-inch clearance
48-in round 96-in round 8-ft round
42-in round 90-in round 8-ft round is the nearest common size

There is a genuine difference in retailer recommendations for a 60-inch round table. An 8-ft round rug provides approximately 18 inches of clearance, which may work with compact chairs and limited pull-back space. The stricter 24-inch formula points to a 9-ft round, which is safer when full chair movement matters. Lowe’s dining guidance illustrates the tighter 8-ft approach; the formula above explains why 9 ft is the more conservative choice.

Dining-room exceptions

  • Include table leaves or extensions that are normally used.
  • Match the rug shape to the table where practical: round under round and rectangular under rectangular or oval.
  • Account for armchairs, wide chair backs, bar carts, sideboards, walls, and nearby cabinetry.
  • Choose a low-pile or flatweave rug so chair legs move more easily.
  • Check that the rug edge will not create an unstable condition beneath only part of a table or chair.

Bedroom rug sizes

Bedroom sizing depends on where the rug begins and what it is meant to cover. “8×10 for a queen” and “9×12 for a king” are useful starting points for a common lower-two-thirds arrangement, not universal answers for every frame, nightstand, bench, or room.

Layout 1: Under the lower two-thirds of the bed

The rug begins below or around the nightstands and extends beneath the lower portion of the bed, leaving a soft landing at both sides and the foot. Common starting points are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Twin or full: 5×8 or 6×9
  • Queen: 8×10
  • King: 9×12
  • Very large room, substantial frame, or bench included: 10×14 or larger

Center the rug on the bed, not necessarily on the room. Confirm that the lower edge does not block a bedroom door, closet door, floor vent, or walkway.

Layout 2: Under the bed and nightstands

This fuller arrangement creates a framed, more substantial look. Measure the combined footprint of the bed frame, nightstands, bench or chest, and the visible border you want around them. A standard 8×10 or 9×12 may not be large enough if the nightstands and bench must sit completely on the rug.

Layout 3: Runners beside the bed

Two runners are practical in a narrow room, when the bed is against a wall, when a large rug would obstruct a walkway, or when you want landing zones without covering most of the floor. Common options include 2×6 or 2×9 runners beside a queen bed and approximately 6- or 7-foot runners beside a king. Keep the runners proportionate to the bed and avoid having them extend far beyond it.

U.S. mattress dimensions

Bed size Mattress footprint
Twin 38×75 in
Twin XL 38×80 in
Full/double 53–54×75 in
Queen 60×80 in
King 76×80 in
California king 72×84 in

These are standard U.S. mattress footprints reported by Casper and Sleep Foundation. The actual bed frame can be several inches larger, so measure the frame rather than relying on mattress dimensions. A California king is longer and narrower than a standard king, which can change the most useful rug orientation.

Runner rugs: hallways, entries, kitchens, and bedside paths

Hallways

Measure the clear hallway width at its narrowest point. A runner should generally leave 4–5 inches of bare floor on each side, with 6 inches often producing a balanced border. At the ends, leave approximately 6 inches where doors, thresholds, and transitions permit.

Use this working formula:

Runner width = usable passage width − approximately 8–12 inches
Runner length = usable path length − approximately 12 inches

Typical starting sizes include:

  • 2×6: short hall or transition
  • 2×8 or 2.5×8: standard hallway
  • 2×9, 2.5×10, or 3×10: longer or wider passage
  • Multiple runners: extra-long or segmented corridors

Do not force one long runner through multiple doorways if it touches thresholds or interferes with doors. In a very long hall, two coordinated runners with an intentional gap can look and function better. See Wayfair’s runner-sizing guidance for side and end-clearance recommendations.

Entryways and foyers

  • 2×3 or 3×5: compact entry directly inside the door
  • 4×6 or 5×7: larger foyer
  • Runner: long, narrow entry hall

Leave intentional exposed flooring around the perimeter and test the front-door swing. The rug and pad together must fit beneath the door; a thick rug can fail even when its length and width are correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kitchen runners

Size a kitchen rug around the standing and prep zone rather than automatically covering the whole kitchen. Common starting points are a 2×3 in front of a sink, a 3×5 for a wider sink or prep area, a 2×6 or 2×9 runner in a galley kitchen, and a 5×8 in a larger open kitchen if it does not interfere with appliances or seating.

Leave clearance from cabinetry and check every dishwasher, oven, refrigerator, and pantry door. Lowe’s commonly recommends approximately 6 inches between kitchen rugs and cabinets in sink and stove applications. Choose a low-pile or flatweave construction with a stable, compatible pad or backing.

Bathroom rugs and bath mats

A bath mat is primarily functional and absorbent, usually placed where someone exits a shower or tub. A bathroom rug is more decorative and may cover a larger dry area near a vanity. Size either one around the available floor and fixture operation—not by applying living-room rules.

Nominal bath size Typical use
17×24 in Powder room, pedestal sink, or very small shower area
20×32 or 21×34 in Standard single vanity or tub/shower exit
24×40 in Larger vanity or shower area
20×60 or 24×72 in Double vanity or narrow bathroom runner
3×5, 4×6, or 5×8 ft Large primary bathroom, only when clear of fixtures and doors

Measure the open floor, vanity width, shower or tub exit, toilet clearance, and door swing. Do not allow the rug to buckle around fixtures or create a raised trip edge. Wayfair’s bathroom sizing guide provides additional bath-mat and vanity-based examples.

Home-office rugs

An office rug must cover the chair’s actual rolling zone, not just the desk footprint. Pull the chair away from the desk as far as it is normally used, turn it, and mark the full movement area with tape.

  • A 5×7 may work for a compact desk and limited chair movement.
  • A 6×9 is a more useful starting point for a desk-and-chair zone.
  • An 8×10 or larger may be needed for a large desk, guest chair, filing cabinet, or meeting area.
  • Low-pile or flatweave rugs are easier for casters than thick shag or high-pile rugs.
  • A chair mat may be appropriate over a valuable rug when the chair is used heavily every day.

Review Rugs Direct’s office-rug guidance for the desk-plus-chair approach. A rug that catches wheels can be less functional than a smaller, flatter option.

Kids’ rooms, nurseries, and playrooms

For a crib or toddler bed, consider a 3×5 beside the bed or a 5×7 or 6-ft round beneath it. For a twin or full bed, 6×9, 8×10, or an 8-ft round can work beneath the lower two-thirds, depending on the room and furniture.

For a playroom, choose the largest rug that leaves safe clearance around doors, storage units, stairs, and circulation paths. Washable construction, a stable pad, and flat edges are practical priorities. “Machine washable” does not necessarily mean the entire rug and pad can be placed in a household washing machine; check the manufacturer’s care instructions. Ruggable’s kids’ room guidance also recommends sizing around the bed and selecting the largest playroom rug that fits safely.

Outdoor rugs

For outdoor dining or conversation areas, allow approximately 24–30 inches beyond the table or seating set on all sides when chairs need to move. Match round tables with round rugs where practical, and use rectangular rugs with rectangular conversation sets. This is a practical retailer recommendation rather than a universal standard; Lowe’s outdoor-rug guide uses the same general clearance range.

Measure the patio, deck, or porch, then check door thresholds, drainage, furniture feet, and wind exposure. An outdoor rug that extends into a door swing or traps water against a threshold is the wrong size even if the furniture fits.

Open-plan rooms: use rugs to define zones

An open floor plan often works better with multiple defined rugs than with one rug covering the living room, dining room, kitchen traffic path, and entry. Use one rug to anchor the living seating group and another beneath the dining table if that area has its own furniture footprint.

The rugs do not need to match exactly. Relate them through color, tone, texture, or pattern, and keep their scale reasonably balanced. One enormous rug next to a tiny scatter rug can look accidental, while two appropriately sized rugs can make the layout easier to navigate and maintain.

Clearance rules that prevent common failures

Bare-floor borders

There is no universal “18-inch rule.” Some design guidance suggests approximately 5–18 inches of exposed floor around an area rug; other guidance uses 12–18 inches around a defined living area. About 18 inches is a traditional styling heuristic, not a building code. Runners usually need only 4–6 inches at each side, while dining rugs need 24–36 inches beyond the table so chairs remain supported.

  • Low-pile Design & Foldable Packaging: Designed with a low-pile construction, this rug offers soft touch and can fit easily under furniture and door gaps. Robotic vacuums can travel freely over its surface. This structure also supports convenient machine washing and space-saving storage
  • Note on Shipping Creases: Creases may appear after unpacking due to folded shipping packaging. These indentations will fade naturally within days under regular use. To accelerate flattening, reverse-fold the rug or place heavy items on creased areas

Choose the border that suits the furniture and circulation. A larger rug is usually more visually connected when two sizes work equally well, but “bigger is better” does not override doors, vents, walkways, cabinets, or furniture operation.

Doors and thresholds

Measure the gap beneath every door that could pass over the rug. The combined thickness of the rug and pad must remain below that gap. A low-pile rug may fit where a plush rug does not. Also check transitions to tile, hardwood, carpet, stairs, and exterior doors.

Rug-pad sizing

A normal pad should generally be about 1 inch smaller than the rug on every side. In dimensional terms, subtract approximately 2 inches from both the rug’s length and width. The rug’s edges should contact the floor so the pad does not show or create a raised lip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a thick pad or very large rug, some manufacturers recommend a larger inset—approximately 2.5–3 inches rather than the usual 1 inch per side. Follow the pad manufacturer’s instructions, especially for heavy rugs, thick cushioning, or irregular shapes. RugPadUSA’s measuring guidance explains the ordinary inset and thicker-pad exception.

Pile height and furniture movement

Pile-height labels vary by retailer. Lowe’s uses practical categories of thin below 0.25 inch, medium from 0.26–0.75 inch, high at 0.76 inch or more, and shag at approximately 0.5–1 inch or more. These are shopping classifications, not universal industry definitions.

For dining rooms, kitchens, hallways, offices, and doorways, low-pile or flatweave rugs are generally easier to cross and move furniture over. Always check the product’s measured pile height and include the pad in the clearance calculation.

Floor compatibility

Do not assume every non-slip backing or rug pad is safe for every floor. Floor & Decor warns about possible discoloration or staining from rubber- or latex-backed rugs on vinyl. Flooring and pad manufacturers may give different advice depending on the finish and material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using rubber, latex, PVC, adhesive-backed, or specialty pads on vinyl, laminate, unfinished wood, or a specialty finish, check the flooring manufacturer’s warranty and compatibility requirements. If the floor changes color, feels sticky, traps moisture, or shows residue, remove the product and investigate before continuing to use it.

What to do when no standard size fits

Do not buy a too-small rug simply because it is the nearest catalog size. Consider these alternatives:

  • Use front-legs-on placement instead of trying to put every living-room piece on an undersized rug.
  • Use two bedside runners instead of one large bedroom rug.
  • Use multiple coordinated rugs to define open-plan zones.
  • Layer a smaller decorative rug over a larger flatweave or natural-fiber base. A styling guide from Pottery Barn suggests revealing approximately 1–3 feet of the lower rug; treat that as a styling option, not a requirement.
  • Order a custom size for an oversized table, unusual room, or nonstandard furniture arrangement.
  • Choose a washable or indoor/outdoor construction when maintenance is the priority.
  • Use carpet tiles or a chair mat in a high-use office if a conventional rug interferes with rolling.

Common rug-sizing mistakes and fixes

Problem Why it happens Fix
Postage-stamp living-room rug Only the coffee table fits while the seating floats around it. Move up to a size that reaches the front legs, or make the coffee-table-only layout intentionally small and proportionate.
Dining chairs catch on the edge The rug was measured around the table, not the chairs pulled out. Add at least 24 inches beyond every side of the table.
Bedroom rug looks too short It ends before the side landing zones or covers only the foot of the bed. Use a larger lower-two-thirds layout or two bedside runners.
Runner touches the walls The runner was sized from the full hall width. Subtract approximately 8–12 inches from the clear width and test the exact product dimensions.
Door will not open The rug and pad together are thicker than the door clearance. Use a thinner construction or pad, or change the rug’s location.
Pad shows or creates a lip The pad was cut to the nominal rug size. Inset it approximately 1 inch on every side, or more for a thick pad if directed.
Floor is discolored or sticky The backing or pad is incompatible with the floor finish. Stop using it and check the flooring manufacturer’s requirements.
Rug does not match its label Actual handmade, knotted, fringed, or irregular dimensions differ from the nominal category. Use the product page’s exact dimensions and measure the rug without fringe.
Furniture rocks One side sits on the rug edge while another sits on bare floor. Move the rug farther beneath the furniture, choose a larger rug, or keep the furniture completely outside its footprint.

Final pre-order checklist

  • Confirm the product’s exact length and width, not just its nominal size.
  • Confirm the rug’s orientation and the direction of its pattern or pile.
  • Mark which furniture legs, chair positions, or wheels must remain on the rug.
  • Test dining chairs in their pulled-out position.
  • Open entry, closet, bathroom, cabinet, oven, dishwasher, and appliance doors.
  • Check floor vents, registers, fireplace hearths, thresholds, stairs, radiators, and built-ins.
  • Walk the intended route and preserve usable circulation.
  • Confirm the rug and pad will fit beneath doors.
  • Choose the pad size and thickness separately from the rug.
  • Check pad and backing compatibility with the flooring manufacturer’s requirements.
  • Account for fringe, irregular edges, and actual product variation.
  • Review return or exchange terms before ordering a nonstandard or oversized rug.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 5×7 rug too small for a living room?

Not always. A 5×7 can work in a compact room or beneath a coffee table, but it is usually too small if the goal is to place the front legs of a sofa and chairs on the rug. Tape the seating footprint and test a 5×7 against a 5×8 or 6×9 before buying.

Should a rug be wider than the sofa?

Ideally, a living-room rug is wide enough to connect the sofa and chairs, and a larger rug often extends beyond the sofa ends. However, a rug can be narrower than the sofa when the front-legs-on layout still connects the seating group and leaves safe circulation.

How much rug should extend beyond a dining table?

Allow at least 24 inches on every side, measured from the table edge. Use up to 36 inches when chairs are wide, armchairs are used, or more pull-back space is needed.

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

An 8×10 is a common starting point when the rug sits under approximately the lower two-thirds of a queen bed. A larger rug may be necessary if the nightstands, bench, or bed frame must sit fully on the rug.

What size rug goes under a king bed?

A 9×12 is a common starting point for a king bed in a lower-two-thirds layout. Measure the actual frame and surrounding furniture first, especially for a California king or a large bedroom with a bench.

Should all furniture legs be on the rug?

Not necessarily. All-legs-on is the most complete living-room layout, but front legs on the rug is a valid and often better option in smaller rooms. Dining chairs, however, should remain on the rug when pulled out.

How much floor should show around a rug?

For many area rugs, approximately 12–18 inches of exposed floor can create a balanced border, but this is a styling heuristic rather than a rule. Runners commonly leave 4–6 inches at each side, while dining rugs need substantially more clearance beyond the table.

How wide should a hallway runner be?

Subtract approximately 8–12 inches from the hallway’s usable width, leaving about 4–6 inches of floor at each side. Measure at the narrowest point and check doors, thresholds, and baseboards.

How much shorter should a rug pad be?

For an ordinary pad, make it approximately 2 inches shorter in both dimensions—about 1 inch inset on every side. Thick pads or large rugs may require a larger inset according to the pad manufacturer.

Will the rug fit under a door?

Only if the combined rug-and-pad thickness is less than the gap beneath the door. Test the actual rug and pad thickness, particularly at entryways, closets, bathrooms, and rooms with low-clearance doors.

Can I put a rug over carpet?

Yes, but use a pad or rug-to-carpet solution intended for that application and test for sliding, rippling, trapped moisture, and door clearance. Do not assume a standard hard-floor non-slip pad is appropriate for every carpet or floor finish.

Are nominal rug sizes exact?

No. Retail sizes such as 8×10 are shopping categories. Handmade, hand-knotted, fringed, and irregular rugs may differ from the label, so use the product page’s exact measurements and exclude fringe from the usable footprint.

Is an 8-ft or 9-ft round rug right for a 60-inch table?

An 8-ft round rug gives approximately 18 inches of clearance and may work with compact chairs. A 9-ft round gives approximately 24 inches and is the safer choice when full chair movement is important.

What should I do if no standard rug size fits?

Try front-legs-on placement, two bedside runners, multiple coordinated rugs, layering, a custom-size rug, or a lower-pile washable or indoor/outdoor alternative. Do not choose a size that blocks doors or makes furniture unstable simply because it is readily available.

The Bottom Line

Choose the rug from the furniture outward: connect the seating, keep pulled-out dining chairs on the rug, size bedroom rugs from the bed placement, and preserve runner clearances. Test the footprint with painter’s tape, check every door and cabinet, compare exact product dimensions, and size the pad separately. When two options work equally well, the larger rug usually creates a more connected room—but only after safety and operation requirements are satisfied.
