The best Raspberry Pi smart lock uses the Raspberry Pi as the local brain—not as the only thing physically securing the door. Run Home Assistant on the Pi, connect it to a mechanically sound commercial smart lock or properly specified access-control product, and add independent door sensing, secure remote access, notifications, backup entry, and tested failure procedures.
A hobby servo turning a deadbolt can demonstrate automation, but it is not automatically a safe exterior-door security system. The ultimate build is layered: reliable door hardware handles the lock, while the Raspberry Pi coordinates decisions and integrations.

Three ways to build it
| Design | Best for | Advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial smart lock plus Home Assistant | Most homeowners | Best balance of reliability, convenience, and integration | Protocol and ecosystem limitations |
| Retrofit deadbolt actuator plus Home Assistant | Renters or owners preserving existing hardware | Often retains the exterior key cylinder | Highly dependent on alignment, motor strength, and battery condition |
| DIY electric strike, solenoid, or access-control system | Gates, workshops, interior doors, and experiments | Maximum customization | Highest safety, electrical, and mechanical risk |
For a primary exterior entrance, choose the first option unless you have specialist access-control experience. A DIY actuator is appropriate for a controlled demonstration or non-critical door, not as an untested replacement for a certified residential lock.

The lock must remain usable if Home Assistant, the network, or the internet is unavailable. Provide a physical key, interior thumb-turn, keypad, or another independent fallback. Home Assistant should make the system more useful without becoming a single point of failure.

A Raspberry Pi 5 is a strong controller for Home Assistant, cameras, dashboards, MQTT, and other local services. Raspberry Pi lists a quad-core 2.4GHz Arm Cortex-A76 processor, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0/BLE, and a PCIe interface on its official product page. Use a reliable power supply, active cooling, dependable storage, and wired Ethernet where practical.
Performance is rarely the limiting factor in a basic lock installation. Radio range, storage reliability, power continuity, door alignment, and the lock’s own local behavior matter more. Use regular Home Assistant backups stored away from the Pi, and consider a UPS for the controller, network equipment, and any lock gateway that must remain available during short outages.
Raspberry Pi’s December 1, 2025 pricing announcement listed US prices of $45 for 1GB, $55 for 2GB, $70 for 4GB, $95 for 8GB, and $145 for 16GB. Prices and availability can change, so verify the current regional price before buying from the official pricing announcement.
If you want Home Assistant with less assembly and maintenance, Home Assistant Green is the appliance alternative. Its official page currently shows a recommended US MSRP of $199, with regional pricing and taxes varying. It is a better fit when you do not need GPIO, custom camera processing, or unusual Linux services.

Lock options worth considering
Aqara U200, U300, and other Matter-capable Aqara locks
Aqara’s Home Assistant integration and Home Assistant’s certified-products directory list supported Aqara devices including the U200 and U300. The U200 listing uses Matter over Thread, and Aqara describes Matter devices in Home Assistant as local integrations. See the Aqara integration and certified-products directory.
This is an attractive path for privacy-conscious users who want standards-based, potentially local control. However, Matter does not guarantee that every manufacturer feature appears in Home Assistant. The certified-device information currently notes that fingerprint sensing is not available in Home Assistant for the listed U200, even though the lock may support fingerprint access through its own ecosystem. Thread also requires a functioning Thread border-router arrangement, and regional hardware can differ.
Yale Assure Lock 2
Yale’s Assure Lock 2 range includes variants with features such as fingerprint access and Apple Home Key support. Check the exact model on the official Assure Lock 2 page.
Home Assistant supports Yale devices through the Yale Home integration, but its documentation classifies the integration as cloud push and says many listed devices require a Yale Connect Bridge or doorbell. That makes Yale a reasonable choice for users already invested in the ecosystem, but not the first choice for someone requiring strictly local, cloud-independent operation. Device updates, available entities, and bridge requirements vary by model.

Nuki’s US product pages advertise Matter and compatibility with major platforms, including Home Assistant. Its retrofit-oriented products can suit users who want to preserve existing door hardware. Review the US Smart Lock page and deadbolt product page for the exact model.
Confirm cylinder requirements, door geometry, regional compatibility, and whether the features you use in the Nuki app are exposed identically through Matter or Home Assistant. A retrofit motor is only as reliable as the door alignment and deadbolt movement it operates.

Test the existing lock manually before installing electronics. The bolt should move smoothly with the door closed and open. Fix sagging hinges, frame pressure, or a misaligned strike first; a motor that works on a workbench may stall when the bolt is rubbing against the frame.
Install the hardware safely
Keep the mechanical security layer separate from the controller. Use the lock manufacturer’s mounting method, retain the physical override, and install the door contact where it cannot be easily knocked out of alignment.
For a DIY strike, motor, or solenoid installation:
- Never power an electric strike, motor, or solenoid directly from a Raspberry Pi GPIO pin.
- Use a suitable transistor, MOSFET, relay, or dedicated driver.
- Provide flyback protection for inductive loads.
- Use a separate regulated supply when the load requires it.
- Protect GPIO inputs from excessive voltage.
- Add appropriate fusing, strain relief, and enclosure protection.
- Keep mains voltage out of a hobby enclosure.
- Choose a driver rated for the actual load and duty cycle.
- Define what happens if the controller, relay, or power supply fails.
There is no universal relay schematic for every lock. A fail-safe electric strike, fail-secure strike, motorized deadbolt, solenoid, and magnetic lock have different electrical and emergency-egress requirements. For a primary exterior door, have a qualified locksmith or access-control professional review the installation and local code implications.
Fail-safe, fail-secure, and emergency egress
Fail-secure hardware remains locked when power is lost. Fail-safe hardware unlocks when power is lost. Neither is automatically correct for every door. Security, fire safety, occupant safety, and local building requirements must be considered together.
Never create a system that can trap someone inside. Interior egress should remain simple and code-compliant. Magnetic locks and electric strikes are not interchangeable, and their release behavior during fire or power failure can differ substantially. Do not rely on an internet connection or Home Assistant for emergency release.
Set up Home Assistant
- Install Home Assistant OS on supported storage.
- Connect the Pi by Ethernet where possible.
- Pair the lock using its required Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, or vendor integration.
- Add an independent door-contact sensor.
- Expose battery, availability, tamper, and jammed states where the hardware supports them.
- Create a dashboard showing door state and lock state separately.
- Configure notifications and off-device backups.
- Install MQTT only if the selected hardware needs it.
For MQTT deployments, Home Assistant recommends the official Mosquitto Broker app. See the MQTT integration documentation.

Essential automations
The following examples are illustrative. Replace entity IDs and verify whether your contact sensor uses off for closed or on for closed.
Lock only after the door is closed
alias: Lock front door when closed
triggers:
- trigger: state
entity_id: binary_sensor.front_door
to: "off"
for: "00:00:10"
conditions:
- condition: state
entity_id: lock.front_door
state: "unlocked"
actions:
- action: lock.lock
target:
entity_id: lock.front_door
mode: single
This reduces the chance of throwing a bolt against an open or partially closed door. It does not replace mechanical alignment testing.
Warn when the door is unlocked
alias: Alert if front door remains unlocked
triggers:
- trigger: state
entity_id: lock.front_door
to: "unlocked"
for: "00:05:00"
conditions:
- condition: state
entity_id: binary_sensor.front_door
state: "off"
actions:
- action: notify.notify
data:
title: "Front door is unlocked"
message: "The front door has been unlocked for five minutes."
mode: single
Alert on an unexpected state
alias: Check unexpected front-door unlock
triggers:
- trigger: state
entity_id: lock.front_door
to: "unlocked"
conditions:
- condition: state
entity_id: binary_sensor.front_door
state: "on"
actions:
- action: notify.notify
data:
title: "Check front door"
message: "The lock is unlocked while the door sensor reports open."
mode: single
Use this as an alert or automation guard—not necessarily as an automatic relock. Relocking while someone is passing through can create a safety problem.
Add low-battery, unavailable, jammed, door-held-open, and tamper alerts. Automatic unlocking should require an explicit user action plus conditions such as a closed door, permitted alarm state, reachable lock, and no recent failed credential attempts. Presence alone should never unlock the door.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.MQTT: state confirmation matters
Home Assistant’s MQTT Lock integration supports command topics, state topics, availability, and intermediate states such as locking, unlocking, and jammed. A useful structure is:
mqtt:
- lock:
name: Front Door
unique_id: front_door_lock
command_topic: "home/frontdoor/set"
state_topic: "home/frontdoor/state"
payload_lock: "LOCK"
payload_unlock: "UNLOCK"
state_locked: "LOCKED"
state_unlocked: "UNLOCKED"
availability_topic: "home/frontdoor/availability"
The device should publish the state only after confirming the physical result. In optimistic mode, Home Assistant changes the reported state immediately after sending the command; that is not proof that the bolt moved. Use independent feedback whenever possible.

Security hardening
- Do not port-forward Home Assistant directly to the internet.
- Do not expose an unauthenticated MQTT broker.
- Use unique passwords, strong user accounts, and multi-factor authentication.
- Use a properly secured VPN or Home Assistant Cloud for remote access.
- Never run arbitrary lock-control scripts as root unless their risks are understood and controlled.
- Do not unlock from an unauthenticated webhook.
- Keep permanent access codes and secrets out of public repositories.
- Use separate, revocable accounts for household members, guests, and service providers.
- Review access logs and failed credential attempts.
- Prefer local Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Bluetooth paths when they meet your requirements.
“Works with Home Assistant” does not mean “fully local.” Identify the protocol, required hub, cloud dependency, update method, polling or push behavior, and missing manufacturer features before purchase. Matter can provide basic lock control without exposing fingerprint enrollment, user-code management, operation history, temporary codes, alarms, calibration, or firmware controls.

Presence, cameras, and biometrics
Presence detection is useful for reminders and notifications, but automatic unlocking based only on a phone appearing on Wi-Fi is unsafe. A safer model is:
Known person present
+ door is closed
+ explicit unlock request
+ alarm state permits entry
+ lock is reachable
+ no recent failed credential attempts
A Pi camera can provide a doorbell view, snapshots, delivery detection, and tamper evidence. Face recognition should not be the sole credential because lighting, masks, camera placement, spoofing, and recognition errors can produce false decisions.
For fingerprint systems, establish where templates are stored, whether they leave the lock, whether Home Assistant can manage them, whether a cloud account is required, how credentials are revoked, and what happens after a factory reset or resale.
Failure testing before relying on the lock
- Lock and unlock using the manufacturer’s local control.
- Lock and unlock from Home Assistant.
- Operate the physical key.
- Operate the interior thumb-turn or manual release.
- Try the door-open and door-ajar conditions.
- Confirm low-battery notifications and emergency power access.
- Restart Home Assistant.
- Reboot the Pi.
- Disconnect the network.
- Interrupt power to the controller and gateway.
- Test a stalled or misaligned bolt without forcing the mechanism.
- Try an incorrect PIN or unauthorized credential.
- Confirm that a tamper or unavailable state generates a useful alert.
- Verify that occupants can exit quickly without the Pi, phone, or internet.
Do not enable “lock when everyone leaves” until you have also tested dead phone batteries, presence false negatives, a second occupant remaining inside, guests, children, pets, service workers, and an open door.
Best design by user
| User | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| Most homeowners | Commercial smart lock plus Home Assistant and an independent door sensor |
| Privacy-first users | A compatible local Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Bluetooth design with documented offline behavior |
| Renters | A retrofit lock that preserves the existing exterior cylinder and physical key |
| Experimenters | A DIY actuator on an interior, cabinet, workshop, or non-critical door |
| Gates and workshops | Professionally specified electric strike or access-control hardware |
| Users who want minimal maintenance | Home Assistant Green or another supported appliance instead of a self-built Pi system |
Bottom line
The ultimate Raspberry Pi smart home door lock is not a Raspberry Pi GPIO pin connected to a servo. It is a layered access system: reliable mechanical hardware, independent door sensing, a local Home Assistant controller, secure networking, battery and tamper monitoring, physical fallback entry, and a documented recovery plan.
For most homes, start with a commercial lock that fits the door and offers a documented local or standards-based integration. Use the Pi to coordinate it with cameras, notifications, presence, guest access, and the rest of the smart home—while ensuring the door remains safe and usable when the Pi does not.
