The Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) is more than a small smart speaker: it is a screen for photos, recipes, timers, calendars, alarms and media, as well as a control point for compatible smart-home devices. The quickest route from box to useful household display is to use the Google Home app, choose the correct Google Account and home, then configure privacy, media and household access before adding automations.
This guide is for U.S. owners. Google’s menus and feature availability can vary by account, device, country, language, subscription and rollout. As of August 18, 2026, Google’s U.S. Store listed the Nest Hub (2nd gen) at $99.99, but prices and availability can change.

Before you plug in the Nest Hub
Gather these items first:
- Nest Hub (2nd gen) and its power adapter.
- A Google Account that should own or administer the home.
- A reliable, internet-connected Wi-Fi network.
- An Android phone or tablet running Android 9.0 or later, or an iPhone or iPad running iOS 17.0 or later.
- The current Google Home app from Google Play or the App Store.
- Bluetooth enabled on the mobile device during setup.
Connect the phone to the Wi-Fi network you want the Hub to use. Use a secure wireless network; WPA2 is an appropriate baseline. Google’s Android setup guidance lists compatibility with 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and excludes WPA2 Enterprise networks. A computer cannot complete the normal setup process, so use a supported mobile device.

For the first setup, place the Hub approximately 15–20 feet from the router. Keep the phone close to the Hub as well; Google’s troubleshooting guidance suggests roughly 5–20 feet during setup. You can move the display after it is connected and you have confirmed that Wi-Fi works reliably.

Choose the best location
Placement determines which features are convenient and how much personal information is visible or audible.
- Kitchen: Useful for recipes, timers, shopping lists and music. Keep it away from steam, grease, splashes and direct heat.
- Bedroom: Convenient for alarms, clock information, Sunrise Alarm and optional sleep-related features. Consider whether you want a microphone and sensing device in a private room.
- Living room: A strong all-purpose location for photos, media, broadcasts, smart-home controls and shared information.
- Entryway: Helpful for routines, reminders and viewing compatible doorbells or cameras. Do not treat it as a security-critical controller.
The Nest Hub is not battery-powered or portable. It requires wall power for normal operation.
Set up the Nest Hub step by step
- Install or update the Google Home app.
- Open the app and sign in with the Google Account that should manage the home.
- Plug the Nest Hub into a wall outlet and wait for its display to boot.
- In Google Home, tap Add → Device. If an automatic setup prompt appears, tap Set up or Next.
- Scan the QR code shown on the Hub or supplied during setup.
- If scanning fails, select Use setup code and enter the code shown on the display.
- If Google Home still cannot identify it, choose Add a different way, search for the device and select the Nest Hub.
- Wait for the app to connect. A successful connection produces a “Connected” confirmation.
- Follow the remaining prompts to choose the home, room and Wi-Fi network.
- Review optional features such as Voice Match, personal results, Photo Frame, media services, calling, Gemini for Home and Sleep Sensing. You can generally enable eligible features later if you skip them now.
Keep the QR or setup code accessible until setup is complete. If the Hub is eventually moved to another home or Wi-Fi network, Google Home may require you to update its network settings or reset it.

These are not cosmetic choices. The home determines which people, devices, services and automations can interact with the Hub. The room keeps devices organized and makes voice commands such as “turn off the kitchen lights” more reliable. The Google Account controls calendars, reminders, personal results, media links and Voice Match behavior.
If you have multiple Google Accounts, check the active account before adding the device. Setting up the Hub under the wrong account can leave you with the wrong calendar, YouTube profile, music library or personal results. Google Home supports multiple homes; use the home selector in the app to switch between them.
Voice Match and personal results
Voice Match can personalize calendar and commute information, music recommendations, personal libraries, YouTube content and some calling features. It is useful in a household where different people need their own information, but it is also a privacy decision: it creates voice-profile data and allows more account-specific behavior on a shared device.
Depending on your account and rollout, the menu may use either Google Assistant or Gemini for Home:

Only one Voice Match profile can be associated with a Google Account. Google also notes that Google Workspace accounts do not support the same Voice Match setup flow.
Enable it if…
- You want personalized calendars, reminders and commute information.
- Several household members use different music or YouTube accounts.
- You want supported contact-calling features.
Skip or limit it if…
- The Hub is in a shared room where personal information could be exposed.
- You prefer simpler household behavior over account personalization.
- You do not want to create or retain a voice profile for this home.
Turning Voice Match off removes the voice pattern from the selected home or device and disables personal results there. You can review or remove Voice Match audio clips through Google My Activity. Personal results should be enabled only when the Hub’s location and household make calendar, reminder, contact and similar information appropriate to display or announce.
Personalize the display
Open the Hub’s device settings in Google Home to adjust the experience. Useful settings include:
- Photo Frame: Select Google Photos albums for the ambient display.
- Brightness: Adjust it manually or let the Hub adapt to room light. Google says the display adjusts to ambient lighting.
- Volume: Set a comfortable level for alarms, timers, music and spoken responses.
- Clock, weather and calendar: Choose what appears when the display is idle, subject to account and feature availability.
- Night or bedtime settings: Use available options to reduce disruption in a bedroom.
- Notifications and personal results: Decide how much information should appear on a shared screen.
For a common area, a shared photo album and general weather information may be appropriate. In a bedroom or home office, consider whether calendar details and reminders should be visible to everyone who passes by.

Do not assume that “Hey Google, play music” will use your preferred service until you select a default. In Google Home:
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Confirm that the correct Google Account is active.
- Tap Home settings → Music under Services.
- Choose the default music service.
- Use More music services to link or unlink additional services.
If a service does not appear, sign in to its app first and check whether it is available in your country and subscription tier. Google says smart speakers and displays currently support a single account per streaming service, so household account separation may require Voice Match or a different service arrangement.
The product page advertises compatibility with services including YouTube Music, Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, SiriusXM, YouTube TV, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Sling TV. Availability and voice capabilities vary by service, country, subscription and title.

Add smart-home devices
Once the Hub itself works, add lights, plugs, thermostats, cameras or other devices through Google Home → Add → Device. The setup route depends on the device:
- Works with Google Home Wi-Fi devices: Usually set up the product in the manufacturer’s app first, then link that service to Google Home.
- Matter devices: May be added through Google Home, shared from the manufacturer’s app or shared between ecosystems using Matter Multi-Admin.
- Bridged devices: May require a manufacturer-specific bridge or hub even after they appear in Google Home.
Before buying, look for the Works with Google Home or Matter designation. Prefer local-control or Matter options if reducing dependence on a vendor cloud matters to you. Matter does not eliminate every network, bridge or account requirement, and Google Home may expose fewer features than the manufacturer’s app.
Cloud dependence also creates a long-term risk. Google’s support documentation cites Wemo’s cloud-service termination on January 31, 2026, as an example of why a linked device can become unavailable when a vendor shuts down its service. Google Home cannot restore a vendor service that no longer operates.
Create useful first automations
After basic device control is reliable, open the Automations section of Google Home. The current app separates Home, Activity and Automations sections.
Good starter automations include:
- Morning: Turn on selected lights, report the weather, read the calendar and start music.
- Bedtime: Turn off lights, adjust a compatible thermostat, lock compatible doors and set an alarm.
- Leaving home: Turn off selected devices.
- Cooking: Start repeated timers or a recipe workflow.
- Broadcast: Announce that dinner is ready, a visitor has arrived or it is time to leave.
Keep automations simple at first and test every action. Google warns that automations are for convenience, not safety- or security-critical use. They depend on Wi-Fi, the internet, Google services and third-party services and may fail. Keep manual controls and ordinary safety procedures in place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCalling: useful, but not emergency communication
Calling is optional and geography-dependent. In the U.S., Google Meet calling is available, and Google-supported calling may reach many U.S. and Canadian numbers. Google Fi and Google Voice mobile calling is available in the U.S. with the relevant plan. The Nest Hub (2nd gen) is listed as a supported display.
For Google Meet, use Google Home → profile picture or initial → Home settings → Communication → Video & Voice Apps → Google Meet.
For Google Fi or Google Voice, use Home → All devices → touch and hold the Hub tile → Settings → Communication → Call Providers.
Personal results and, for some contact-calling features, Voice Match are required. Service availability, account requirements and supported destinations can change.
Nest Hub calling is not a substitute for emergency calling. Emergency calls are not supported through these Nest Hub calling methods.
Sleep Sensing and bedroom use
The Nest Hub (2nd gen) product page describes Sleep Sensing as a feature that tracks sleep and provides personalized insights and tips. It is optional, privacy-sensitive and should not be treated as medical diagnosis, medical monitoring or a replacement for professional care.
Before enabling it, consider whether you want a sensing display in the bedroom and whether everyone affected is comfortable with that arrangement. Confirm current eligibility, availability and any subscription requirements in Google Home. If you decide against it, use the Hub for alarms, clock information, photos, music or other features without enabling sleep sensing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy controls worth reviewing immediately
- Microphone: Use the physical microphone switch when you want the Hub’s microphone disabled. Do not describe the device as never listening; the switch and account controls are the relevant safeguards.
- Voice Match: Enable only for people who want personalized results, and review the associated voice-profile controls.
- Personal results: Disable them on a shared display if calendars, reminders, contacts or other personal information should not appear or be spoken there.
- Activity history: Review Assistant or Gemini for Home activity and delete relevant history through Google’s account controls.
- Shared-home permissions: Add trusted household members and grant administrator access only to people who genuinely need to manage devices, services and automations.
- Linked services: Review music, video, calling and smart-home accounts. Google states that linked services may be available to other people in the home depending on the service and Voice Match status.
- Bedroom sensing: Treat Sleep Sensing as a separate choice, not a mandatory part of setup.
The standard Nest Hub (2nd gen) does not have the camera found on the Nest Hub Max. Do not apply Nest Hub Max camera settings or capabilities to the standard model.

Troubleshooting the Nest Hub
The app cannot find the Hub
- Update Google Home.
- Confirm the Hub is powered on and nearby.
- Turn on location services and give Google Home the required location permission.
- Unplug the Hub for one minute and reconnect it.
- Turn the phone’s Wi-Fi off and on.
- Force-close and reopen Google Home.
- Look for a temporary Wi-Fi network such as
GoogleHomeXXXX. - Try another supported phone or tablet.
- Move the Hub within approximately 15–20 feet of the router.
Factory-reset only after these steps fail. A reset erases device data and cannot be undone.
Setup freezes
Unplug the Hub, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in and restart setup. Keep the phone close to the display and avoid switching apps unnecessarily while the connection is being established.
Wi-Fi will not connect
- Confirm the phone and Hub are intended to use the same network.
- Recheck the Wi-Fi password.
- Keep the phone close to the Hub.
- Bring the router within approximately 15–20 feet during setup.
- Check whether the phone supports the 5GHz network if that is the network being selected.
- Check for router isolation, enterprise authentication or other network restrictions.
The wrong music account plays
Verify the active Google Account, check Home settings → Music, select the intended default service and configure Voice Match for household members who need separate personal results. Some services support only one linked account on a smart speaker or display.
A smart-home device is offline
Check whether it was set up in the manufacturer’s app, whether Matter sharing was completed, whether all relevant devices are on the intended network and whether the product needs a bridge. Also check the vendor’s service status. If the vendor cloud has been discontinued, Google Home cannot bring the device back online.
Is the Nest Hub still the right Google device?
The Nest Hub (2nd gen) is the better fit if you want a dedicated screen for photos, visual recipes, timers, alarms, calendars, media, compatible camera feeds and touch-based smart-home control.
The Google Home Speaker (2026) is an audio-only alternative positioned by Google as a smart speaker with Gemini-related features. It may suit voice-first users, but it cannot replace a screen for photo display, visual recipes, visual timers or on-screen camera feeds.
The Nest Hub Max may be preferable if you need a larger display or camera-related functions. It is a different product, and its setup and available sensing or calling features should not be assumed to match the Nest Hub (2nd gen).
The Pixel Tablet with Charging Speaker Dock can provide a larger tablet experience with hub-like use, but it is more expensive and complex than a dedicated, always-plugged-in Nest Hub. Google documents Pixel Tablet Hub Mode separately from ordinary Nest displays.
