A smart lock with a handle is usually a smart lever or smart knob that replaces a single-bore knob or lever and its latch. The strongest documented U.S. match is the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever. It combines a lever, keypad, built-in Wi-Fi, app control and a physical key. It is not, however, the right answer for every door: many popular smart locks replace only a separate deadbolt.
Before comparing features, identify your door hardware, measure the opening and decide how you will enter if the batteries, Wi-Fi or app fail. Prices and availability can change; the Schlage and Yale price details below were checked August 16–18, 2026, while the buying frame is the 2025 product landscape.

First, identify the lock you actually need
Look at the door edge and the bore holes:
- Smart lever: an integrated exterior keypad or touchscreen and lever that replace a conventional single-bore lever and latch.
- Smart knob: the same concept with a round knob; choices are more limited.
- Smart handleset: an exterior handle assembly, often paired with a separate deadbolt rather than replacing one complete lock.
- Smart mortise lock: a larger lock case inside the door edge, common on commercial, European and some premium residential doors.
- Smart deadbolt: an upper lock that leaves the existing knob or lever in place.
If your door has one bore hole and the handle contains the latch, start with a smart lever or knob. If it has a separate deadbolt above the handle, a smart deadbolt is usually the broader and simpler category. A residential lever is not automatically suitable for a mortise, multipoint, narrow-stile, sliding, storm or fire-rated door.
Quick answer: the best documented integrated-handle choice
Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever
For a standard U.S. residential single-bore door, the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever is the clearest documented choice. Schlage lists built-in Wi-Fi, Schlage Home remote management, Alexa and Google Assistant support, keypad entry, unique access codes, history, notifications, auto-lock options and one physical backup key. It stores up to 100 codes and carries ANSI/BHMA A156.39 Grade AAA certification for security, durability and finish.

Schlage lists a $309 MSRP. The lever fits doors 1⅜–1¾ inches thick with a 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backset, is reversible for left- or right-handed doors and uses four AA alkaline batteries. Schlage claims up to six months of typical battery life and requires a 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi network for Wi-Fi operation. Six months is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test, and usage, temperature, signal strength and alignment affect actual life.
- Choose it when: you need a true lever replacement, direct remote access and phone-free keypad entry.
- Skip it when: your door is nonstandard, has a separate deadbolt, requires Apple Home Key or must meet a specialized fire, commercial or access-control specification.
Apple Home Key support is not established for the Encode Lever page. Do not transfer Home Key claims from a different Schlage model.
Smart lever versus smart deadbolt
| Door situation | Likely hardware | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| One bore; handle contains latch | Smart lever or knob | Replaces the complete lock and handle. |
| Separate deadbolt above handle | Smart deadbolt | Leaves the existing handle in place; usually offers more product choice. |
| Large lock case in door edge | Smart mortise lock | Requires mortise-specific dimensions and hardware. |
| Narrow metal stile, multipoint or sliding door | Specialized product | A standard residential single-bore lever may not install or latch safely. |
Measure before ordering
Do not rely only on “fits most doors.” Record these dimensions and conditions, then compare them with the exact model’s template and installation guide:
- Measure door thickness.
- Measure backset, from the door edge to the bore center.
- Measure bore-hole diameter and the edge faceplate.
- Identify the latch type and whether it is tubular or part of a mortise case.
- Record left- or right-hand operation and confirm the model’s handing procedure.
- Check keypad clearance outside and battery-compartment clearance inside.
- Confirm the door closes and latches without lifting, pushing or pulling.
- Check that the strike plate aligns with the latch.
For the Encode Lever specifically, the documented range is 1⅜–1¾-inch doors and 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backsets. That specification does not certify compatibility with every frame, trim or door assembly.
Security: smart does not automatically mean safer
Evaluate the entire entry assembly, not just wireless features. A Grade AAA lock is meaningful product certification, but it cannot strengthen a weak door, hinges, frame or strike installation. Schlage explains its Encode rating at its security-rating guide.

- Use a sound door and a securely fastened strike.
- Check latch throw, frame alignment and resistance to forced entry.
- Consider code visibility, tamper alerts and keypad exposure.
- Remember that a physical keyway is another attack surface and may require rekeying.
- Do not treat a single-latch smart lever as equivalent to a deadbolt with a reinforced strike on a main entry.
Choose the access methods that fit your household
Keypad codes
Keypads suit families, cleaners, contractors and rentals because users do not need a phone. Look for unique, revocable and, where supported, scheduled codes, plus activity history and notifications. Schlage documents 100-code capacity, unique codes, history and remote management. Codes can still be observed or shared, and touchscreens may be difficult in rain, snow, darkness or gloves.
Physical key
A key provides familiar backup access but preserves a pickable keyway, requires key management and may not match an existing master-key system. The Encode Lever includes one backup key.
App control
Apps can provide remote unlock, alerts, history, battery warnings and guest management. They also introduce phone, account, cloud and internet dependencies. Keep a local entry method.
Apple Home Key
Apple Home compatibility is not the same as Home Key tap-to-unlock through Apple Wallet. Home Key must be listed for the exact model. Yale identifies the Assure Lock 2 Plus as its Home Key model, but it is a deadbolt, not an integrated lever. Yale’s page also says remote HomeKit access requires an Apple home hub.
Fingerprint readers
Biometrics can be fast for a small group, but wet, dirty, cold or damaged fingers can be rejected. Guests and service providers still need another method. Treat fingerprint access as a convenience, not a substitute for dependable backup entry.

Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, Matter and hubs
| Option | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in Wi-Fi | Remote access without a bridge is important. | Often higher battery use and dependence on a strong 2.4-GHz network and cloud service. |
| Bluetooth | Local phone control and lower power are priorities. | Remote control generally needs a bridge or compatible hub. |
| Matter over Thread | You already have a Matter controller and Thread border router. | Feature parity and setup vary; Matter does not guarantee remote access or long battery life. |
| Z-Wave or Zigbee | Your SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant or professional system already supports it. | Requires a compatible hub and more platform-specific setup. |
Schlage presents Wi-Fi, Matter, Thread and Z-Wave as separate paths across its range; evaluate the exact model at the ecosystem overview. Yale sells Bluetooth and Wi-Fi variants in the Assure Lock 2 family, so the connectivity version matters as much as the family name.

Before buying, confirm the low-battery warning, exterior emergency-power contacts, physical key, mechanical override and inside egress. The Encode Lever uses four AA alkaline cells, displays low-battery warnings on the lock and in the app, and has Schlage’s claimed typical life of up to six months.
- Keep a complete spare set where you can reach it.
- Replace all cells together; do not mix old and new batteries.
- Test the key or emergency-power procedure before installation day.
- If the motor strains or retries, correct alignment rather than repeatedly replacing batteries.
Door alignment is a reliability requirement
A noisy or failed motor often means the latch is rubbing, the door is sagging, weather stripping is exerting pressure, the strike is too tight or the frame is warped.
- Close the door and turn the existing lever.
- Confirm the latch retracts smoothly and extends fully when released.
- Close the door without lifting or pushing it.
- Confirm the latch enters the strike without force.
- Correct the frame, strike or weather stripping before installing the smart mechanism.
Fire safety, egress and property rules
Check local building and fire codes, the door’s fire rating, lease or HOA rules, insurance requirements and any landlord or property-manager approval. Occupants should be able to exit from inside without a phone, code or key unless the applicable code and assembly documentation explicitly permit otherwise. Never assume a residential Grade AAA lock is approved for a fire-rated, panic-hardware or commercial assembly.

Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus
For an Apple household with a separate deadbolt, Yale’s Assure Lock 2 Plus is the relevant alternative because Yale identifies it as supporting Apple Home Key and Apple Wallet tap access. On the official shop page checked August 2026, displayed prices were $219.99 for Bluetooth and $309.99 for Wi-Fi, and the models were shown out of stock. Availability must be rechecked. It is not a handle replacement.

Aqara U300: verify before purchase
Aqara positions the U300 for lever-style use, but the U.S. page inspected contained placeholder copy rather than dependable specifications. Confirm the manual, exact door compatibility, connectivity, Apple behavior, battery information and emergency-entry method before treating it as an alternative.
Installation and setup sequence
- Test the existing latch and correct alignment.
- Photograph existing hardware and record measurements.
- Confirm the exact SKU, connectivity version and handing.
- Install the latch and exterior and interior assemblies according to the manufacturer’s guide.
- Install fresh batteries.
- Pair in the manufacturer’s current app.
- Connect Wi-Fi, a hub or a Matter controller as required.
- Calibrate or hand the lock using the official procedure.
- Create a primary code and separate guest codes.
- Test locking and unlocking from both sides.
- Test the physical key or emergency-power method.
- Confirm inside egress works without electronics.
- Store spare batteries and backup credentials.
Troubleshooting common failures
It does not fit
Check door thickness, backset, bore, faceplate, mortise construction, narrow stile, double bore and multipoint hardware against the manufacturer’s template.
The motor is loud or will not lock
Test the door mechanically, realign the strike, install fresh batteries and recalibrate. Then investigate handing or connectivity.
Remote unlock fails
Confirm whether the lock is Bluetooth-only, whether a bridge is required, whether the 2.4-GHz network is available and whether router, account or cloud-service problems are involved. Retain keypad or key access.
Apple Home works but Home Key does not
Those are separate features. Verify Home Key for the exact SKU; do not transfer a deadbolt’s feature list to a lever.
Battery life is shorter than claimed
Manufacturer estimates vary with cycles, cold, weak Wi-Fi, motor resistance, auto-lock frequency, notifications, battery chemistry and firmware. Correct alignment and replace the full set of cells.
