Best Smart Door Locks With Handles for Single-Bore Doors (2026)

The best smart lever depends on the door and your access needs. Compare Aqara, eufy, Schlage and Yale options, plus fit, smart-home compatibility and backup access.

For a smart lever that replaces a standard knob or lever on a single-bore door, the Aqara Smart Lock U300 is the most feature-rich choice; the eufy Smart Lock C33 is the value pick for built-in Wi-Fi and fingerprint entry; and Schlage’s Encode Smart WiFi Lever is the premium hardware alternative. The right choice first depends on the door: a smart lever controls its latch, while a smart deadbolt replaces the separate deadbolt on many front doors. If your main entrance relies on a deadbolt, a smart lever alone may not control its primary lock.

Smart lever, handleset, or deadbolt: which do you need?

Smart lever lock

A smart lever replaces a knob or lever and the latch on a single-bore door. It suits a door designed to lock at the lever, such as many side entrances, garage-to-house doors, offices, basements, and interior rooms. Aqara positions the U300 for several of these secondary-door uses in its U300 announcement.

Smart deadbolt or handleset

A smart deadbolt replaces the deadbolt, leaving the existing knob, lever, or pull handle in place. A handleset combines an exterior pull with a locking mechanism, usually a deadbolt. These are different products from a smart lever, even when a shopping page groups them together.

Retrofit smart lock

A retrofit unit fits over or turns existing interior deadbolt hardware, generally leaving the exterior handle and key cylinder intact. It can be useful where preserving the outside hardware matters, but fit depends on the existing deadbolt and the specific retrofit model.

When a smart lever is not enough

If your primary exterior door has a separate deadbolt, replacing only its lever controls the latch but may leave the deadbolt as the main security barrier. Consider a smart deadbolt, a mechanical lever paired with a smart deadbolt, or both smart devices if you specifically want both functions automated. Do not treat an electronic latch as equivalent to a properly installed deadbolt.

Which smart lever fits each buyer?

Aqara Smart Lock U300: best for feature breadth

The U300 combines a lever with fingerprint access, keypad, Apple Home Key, NFC, Bluetooth, mechanical-key backup, and emergency USB-C power. Aqara lists Matter over Thread and a U.S. store price of $229.99. Its specifications list a hub requirement, so do not interpret Matter or a platform logo as a promise that every feature works remotely without additional compatible equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if you want several ways to enter and are prepared to check the precise Aqara hub, Thread border router, or Matter-controller requirements for your chosen ecosystem. It may be more functionality than a simple garage or office door needs.

eufy Smart Lock C33: best value with built-in Wi-Fi

The C33 combines a fingerprint reader, keypad/passcodes, app control, built-in Wi-Fi, physical-key access, and emergency USB-C power. eufy lists capacity for up to 50 fingerprints and 100 passcodes, eight AA batteries, an approximately eight-month battery-life claim, IP53 for the exterior assembly, and ANSI/BHMA Grade 3. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; see the C33 product page.

It is a practical shortlist choice if you want biometrics and direct Wi-Fi without relying on Apple Home or Matter. eufy says this model does not support Apple HomeKit, IFTTT, or Matter. The manufacturer’s stated battery life will depend on use and conditions.

Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever: premium hardware and code management

Schlage lists built-in Wi-Fi, remote control through the Schlage Home app, unique access codes, auto-lock settings, and Alexa and Google Assistant support for its Encode Smart WiFi Lever. The cited model supports up to 100 access codes, and Schlage’s U.S. page listed it from $309. See the FE789 product details and the Encode lever page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is most compelling if Schlage’s hardware options, finish selection, and straightforward Wi-Fi code management are priorities. Its higher observed price is not evidence of a larger biometric feature set; the cited documentation does not establish Apple Home Key or Matter support for this lever.

Yale Assure Lever: investigate the exact regional model

Yale documentation describes a single-hole lever and keypad and key-free variants. The available flyer and installation and programming instructions are from Yale’s New Zealand site. They do not establish current U.S. price, availability, or the compatibility of a particular U.S. configuration. Confirm the exact SKU and module before treating it as a U.S. alternative.

Smart-home compatibility and remote access are not the same thing

Model Advertised ecosystem signals What to verify
Aqara U300 Aqara, Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Matter, Home Assistant, and IFTTT are identified in Aqara materials; Thread and Bluetooth connectivity Hub/controller needs and which controls or entry features each platform exposes
eufy C33 eufy Security, Alexa, and Google Assistant eufy says C33 lacks Apple HomeKit, IFTTT, and Matter support
Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever Schlage Home app, Alexa, and Google Assistant; built-in Wi-Fi Do not transfer features from a different Encode deadbolt or SKU
Yale Assure Lever Yale’s documentation describes a modular ecosystem Compatibility depends on the module and region; verify the exact U.S. model

A lock can offer local Bluetooth access without offering remote unlocking. Built-in Wi-Fi connects a lock to a home network directly; Thread and Matter commonly depend on a compatible controller or Thread border router for remote access and automations. Proprietary hubs may also be needed for some functions. Aqara’s U300 specifications state “Hub Required: Yes,” while its product page describes expanded integration through an Aqara hub. eufy advertises built-in Wi-Fi for the C33.

Measure the door before choosing a model

Do not rely on a retailer’s “standard door” label. Measure your door and compare the results with the current installation guide for the exact model and finish.

  • Count the bores. A smart lever is intended to replace a single-bore knob or lever. Identify any separate deadbolt bore above it.
  • Measure thickness and backset. Backset is the distance from the door edge to the center of the bore. eufy lists C33 compatibility for doors about 1⅜ to 2⅙ inches thick, with a 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backset. Aqara lists U300 compatibility at 35–55 mm, approximately 1⅜–2⅙ inches. Confirm the exact hole and latch dimensions in the product documentation.
  • Check bore and latch dimensions. Confirm the hole diameter, latch shape, and whether the existing latch preparation matches the replacement.
  • Check handing and clearance. Confirm the door’s left- or right-hand orientation and that trim, molding, glass, or nearby walls will not obstruct the lever, keypad, or interior hardware.
  • Assess exposure and construction. Verify whether the exact lock is suitable for the door material, temperature range, and degree of weather exposure. A smart-lock label alone does not establish weather suitability.
  • Test the existing door mechanically. It should close and latch smoothly without lifting, pulling, or forcing the handle. A smart latch cannot correct a sagging door, misaligned strike, swollen frame, or excessive weather-strip pressure.

Security: evaluate the hardware, credentials, and installation separately

Physical security

Look for an explicit lock grade or certification, then inspect the latch, strike, fasteners, key cylinder, and installation instructions. eufy identifies the C33 as ANSI/BHMA Grade 3. Schlage describes the Encode lever as backed by a “best-in-class” BHMA rating, but that wording should not be converted into a specific grade without a clearly stated certification for the exact model. A properly aligned latch and a well-secured strike matter; follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance and ensure the door frame is sound.

Credential and access security

Use separate codes for people who need separate access, and remove or change them when access ends. Where the model offers them, consider time-limited guest codes, failed-attempt lockout, entry notifications, and auto-lock. Enable two-factor authentication on the associated account if the vendor offers it. Treat voice-assistant unlocking as a separate access path and configure it only if its controls fit your household.

Connectivity and privacy

Check whether setup requires a cloud account, which features require an internet connection, and what continues to work locally if the network or service is unavailable. Do not assume biometric data is stored locally or in the cloud unless the manufacturer documents that detail for the exact model. A smart lock is not hack-proof or burglary-proof: account security, firmware support, network reliability, mechanical condition, and installation all remain relevant.

Battery life and lockout prevention

Model Manufacturer-stated battery and fallback details
Aqara U300 Up to 10 months on one set of replaceable batteries is Aqara’s claim; emergency USB-C power is provided. See the product page and specifications.
eufy C33 Eight AA batteries and approximately eight months of battery life are listed by eufy; low-battery notifications, emergency USB-C power, and a physical key are listed. eufy says USB-C emergency power is not for charging the batteries. See the C33 product page.
Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever Battery type, runtime, and fallback should be checked for the exact SKU in the product details.

Battery-life figures are manufacturers’ estimates, not independent measurements; frequent use, connectivity, temperature, signal strength, and settings can affect runtime. Keep a physical key where supplied, heed low-battery alerts, and learn the emergency-power procedure before you need it. An emergency USB port may power the lock temporarily rather than recharge its batteries.

For the cited Schlage configuration, the manufacturer lists an operating-temperature range of approximately 14°F to 120.2°F for the interior lock body. That range is specific to that component and configuration; do not apply it to every part or model.

Weather exposure and accessibility checks

Use the manufacturer’s exact environmental rating rather than assuming the lock is waterproof. Aqara lists an IPX4 rating for the U300 exterior panel; eufy lists IP53 for the C33 exterior assembly. Confirm the manufacturer’s temperature guidance and whether the lock is intended for a covered or exposed door. Cold weather can also affect batteries.

A lever can be easier to operate than a round knob for many people, but usability depends on placement and design. Check keypad height and visibility, lever clearance, grip, interior controls, and whether the intended user can operate the lock comfortably with one hand. Keep a non-biometric method available: wet, cold, dirty, or poorly enrolled fingers—and sensor contamination—can interfere with fingerprint entry.

Installation and setup checklist

  1. Photograph the existing lock and note whether the door has one bore or a separate deadbolt.
  2. Measure thickness, backset, bore, latch, handing, and clearance; compare them with the exact model’s installation guide.
  3. Confirm that changing the hardware is permitted and that the lock is intended for this door type.
  4. Correct door sag, strike misalignment, or latch binding before installing electronics.
  5. Install the latch and strike as directed, using the specified fasteners; confirm the mechanical latch works smoothly before adding app features.
  6. Install the specified batteries and create the administrator credential using the manufacturer’s setup instructions.
  7. Add at least one backup entry method, such as a PIN or physical key, alongside fingerprint access.
  8. Test locking and unlocking from both sides, then set and test auto-lock only after confirming the door closes reliably.
  9. Test the documented emergency-power or key procedure and store recovery information securely.

Renters, landlords, and owners in managed buildings should get any required approval before changing exterior hardware. Fire-rated doors, shared master-key systems, building access controls, door closers, and panic hardware may require a different solution; do not assume a residential lever is suitable.

What happens when something fails?

Problem What may help Important qualification
Battery depleted Use the physical key or emergency external power if the model provides it. Follow the exact model’s procedure; emergency USB power may not recharge batteries.
Wi-Fi or internet outage A local keypad, fingerprint reader, Bluetooth, or key may remain available. Offline behavior is model- and firmware-dependent; verify before relying on it.
Phone lost or app unavailable Use a stored local credential or physical key, if available. Account recovery and administrator procedures vary.
Cloud service outage Previously stored local credentials may continue to work. Remote control and cloud-dependent features may stop; do not assume local operation without documentation.
Hub or controller offline Try the lock’s documented local entry methods. Remote control and automations that depend on the hub may be interrupted.
Fingerprint fails Use a PIN or key; clean the sensor and check enrollment. Cold, wet, dirty, or damaged fingers and children’s fingerprints can be harder to recognize.
Door will not latch Adjust the door, latch, or strike as needed. Electronics will not fix a mechanical alignment problem.

Which smart lock with a handle should you buy?

  • Choose the Aqara U300 if you want the broadest combination of fingerprint, keypad, Apple Home Key, NFC, and Matter/Thread features and are willing to confirm hub and controller requirements.
  • Choose the eufy C33 if built-in Wi-Fi, fingerprint entry, keypad access, and a lower observed price matter more than Apple Home or Matter integration.
  • Choose the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever if Schlage’s hardware options, finish choices, and Wi-Fi code management justify its higher observed price for you.
  • Investigate the Yale Assure Lever only after confirming a current U.S. SKU, price, and module compatibility for your intended ecosystem.
  • Choose a smart deadbolt instead if your main goal is to control the separate deadbolt on a typical front door; a smart lever may operate only the latch.
