Atlanta’s proposed Stitch project has a revised Phase 1 design and a later construction outlook: Georgia Public Broadcasting reported on June 11, 2026, that the project was expected to be shovel-ready in early 2027, with construction estimated to start in late 2027. Those are forecasts, not confirmation that permits are complete or work has begun. The project’s federal funding loss has reshaped its delivery outlook.
What The Stitch proposes to build
The Stitch is a proposal to place public spaces and housing over part of the Downtown Connector, reconnecting Midtown and downtown Atlanta. Georgia Public Broadcasting described the overall project as spanning 17 acres in its June 2026 coverage. An earlier Urbanize Atlanta account, published in 2024, described a master-plan goal of 14 acres of new public space. Those figures refer to different descriptions and versions of the proposal, not a single confirmed construction footprint.

The distinction matters for understanding the project as infrastructure as well as placemaking: the overall concept, a particular phase, and the area counted as public space are not interchangeable measures.
What appears in the revised Phase 1 design
Central Atlanta Progress presented reworked Phase 1 renderings in October 2025. The proposal places the site between Peachtree Street on the west, Courtland Street on the east, Ralph McGill Boulevard on the south, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on the north. The renderings were developed by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, WSP, and Hargreaves Jones.

Proposed public-space features
- A pavilion intended for performances and shade
- Paths, gardens, and places for social gathering
- A large playground
- An interactive water feature with fog effects
These are design elements shown in renderings, not completed amenities. Urbanize Atlanta’s October 2025 coverage described an earlier Phase 1 footprint of 5.7 acres; the revised design and that older acreage figure should not be treated as proof of the final buildable area.
Why the funding picture changed the outlook
The project’s federal grant loss is central to its schedule and delivery uncertainty. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported in June 2026 that leaders had originally been allotted $160 million in federal grants, which were rescinded. In the same report, Stitch Inc. CEO Jack Cebe said about $50 million in local and federal funding had been secured to date and described annual revenue from a special services district.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Earlier coverage gives different figures and scopes that should not be combined into a single reconciled budget. Urbanize Atlanta reported in October 2025 that $151.4 million in federal grant funds had been rescinded, while Georgia Public Broadcasting reported a $157 million loss that month. Georgia Public Broadcasting also reported a $700 million project estimate in October 2025 and said $50 million was then available, described as a quarter of Phase 1 funding needs. The available reporting does not reconcile that phase-specific description with the broader project estimate or the grant figures.
Before the funding loss, Urbanize Atlanta reported in October 2024 that roughly $200 million had been secured, mostly federal, and described a 2026 groundbreaking forecast. That earlier projection is not a current commitment. The same 2024 account described a roughly four-year Phase 1 construction schedule and a goal of about 14 acres of public space by around 2036, conditional on funding.

What the published schedule does—and does not—say
The newest located construction forecast is Georgia Public Broadcasting’s June 11, 2026 report: Phase 1 was expected to be shovel-ready early in 2027, with construction estimated to start in late 2027. The report does not establish that construction has started, that permitting is complete, or that the forecast remains on track as of October 2026.
An earlier schedule has already shifted. Urbanize Atlanta reported in January 2026 that Atlanta Downtown Stitch Inc., a new board for implementation and oversight, was forecasting shovel-ready status with full permitting by that summer. The June report’s early-2027 shovel-readiness estimate is later than that target. Readers should treat the January milestone as superseded by the newer forecast unless the project or city confirms otherwise.

A nearby installation is not part of the proposed park build
Georgia Public Broadcasting also reported in June 2026 on “What We Weave,” an interactive LED sculpture installed in Mayors Park in May. The artwork uses interweaving lights connected to an audio receiver; its colors change in response to vocal pitch. Artist Eddie Farr made the piece with collaborators in fabrication, lighting, audio, installation, and sculpting. The report described it as a collaboration between Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation and the Office of Cultural Affairs.
Farr said he hoped the installation might encourage people to talk with someone they otherwise would not. It is a separate nearby public-art project, not one of the features shown in The Stitch’s Phase 1 renderings.
What remains uncertain for construction and delivery
- Current permitting status: The June 2026 report gives a projected shovel-ready date but does not confirm completed permits.
- Final scope and acreage: Published accounts use different acreage measures for the overall concept, planned public space, and earlier Phase 1 footprint.
- Reconciled financing: Reports cite different grant-loss figures and distinguish, but do not fully reconcile, project-wide estimates and Phase 1 funding needs.
- Completion date: The latest located schedule estimates a construction start, not a confirmed finish date.
Urbanize Atlanta reported that project backers projected $9 billion in economic value and 4,500 jobs from full implementation. These are projections attributed to Central Atlanta Progress, not measured outcomes. The sources reviewed do not establish an independent evaluation of those projections.
