Karnataka was reported to have received Windergy India 2026’s award for the highest under-construction wind power capacity, with the figure stated as 9 GW. That is a reported project pipeline—not wind capacity already operating. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) separately reported 8,896 MW of installed wind capacity in Karnataka as of 30 June 2026. The Hawk/IANS report attributes the award presentation to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi at the Chennai Trade Centre.
What award was reported, and what does the 9 GW figure mean?
Contemporaneous reporting published on 9 October 2026 says Karnataka received Windergy India 2026’s award for the highest under-construction wind power capacity. It describes the capacity as 9 GW and reports that Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL) managing director Divya Prabhu GRJ received the award from Union Minister Pralhad Joshi at the Chennai Trade Centre. These event details and the award description are attributable to The Hawk/IANS report; an organizer’s award criteria or project-level accounting is not established by the available records.

Under construction means the figure concerns projects being built, rather than turbines already commissioned and generating power. The 9 GW should therefore be read as a rounded reported pipeline figure, not as Karnataka’s installed capacity.
How is this different from KREDL’s Global Wind Day recognition?
KREDL separately publicized a “Highest Wind Capacity Pipeline” recognition at Global Wind Day 2026 in Goa. The post’s event-transcript description refers to nearly nine GW of standalone wind projects currently under construction. That is a distinct recognition with different wording and an event in a different location; it should not be conflated with the Windergy India award. KREDL’s post does not provide the project list or calculation method behind the nearly-nine-GW figure.

How does Karnataka compare on installed wind capacity?
MNRE’s state-wise data reports Karnataka had 8,896 MW (about 8.9 GW) of installed wind capacity as of 30 June 2026, while India had 57,443 MW. The same-date table places Karnataka behind Gujarat and Tamil Nadu for installed wind capacity. This does not contradict a reported award for under-construction capacity: the two figures describe different project statuses. MNRE’s physical-progress data is the relevant source for commissioned-capacity comparisons.

What the national wind figures add—and what they do not prove
MNRE reported India added 6.05 GW of wind capacity during FY 2025–26, describing it as a record annual addition and nearly 46% above FY 2024–25. This is a national additions figure; it does not independently verify Karnataka’s separate under-construction estimate. MNRE’s physical-progress releases report the national and state capacity figures.

What remains unverified about the 9 GW claim?
The available reporting and KREDL post do not identify the individual projects included in the pipeline, show how much construction each has completed, or explain the accounting method used to total capacity. The award comparison criteria are also not stated in the available material. Accordingly, “highest” is best understood as the reported award category, not as evidence that Karnataka leads India in installed wind capacity.
