Samsung’s troubleshooting sequence starts with source selection, TV output, cables, HDMI ARC/eARC negotiation, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections, and the connected device. The quickest way to separate a TV-side problem from a soundbar failure is to play audio from a second, independent source—preferably Bluetooth from a phone or a direct optical/HDMI input—before resetting or replacing anything.
Use the branches below to identify the symptom, test the signal path, and decide when service is justified.

No power
If there is no display, indicator light, or response to the remote, test a different wall outlet, bypass the power strip, check the cord, and confirm the wall switch is on. Some displays time out, so press a soundbar button before concluding that the unit is unpowered.

Incorrect source selection, TV speaker output, a loose cable, an unsupported audio format, or an ARC/eARC handshake is more likely than an immediate amplifier failure. Test another input before declaring the bar defective.

Only TV audio is missing
If Bluetooth, optical, or a phone still produces sound, concentrate on the TV’s output setting, HDMI port, cable, CEC, or ARC/eARC negotiation.
Only one source is missing
Streaming apps working while a console is silent usually indicates a source-device volume, output, secondary-audio, format, cable, or port issue.
The main bar works but the subwoofer or rear speakers do not
This is a wireless-speaker pairing branch, not proof that the main soundbar has failed.
Sound cuts in and out
Check HDMI stability, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi interference, wireless-speaker pairing, overheating, and software. Anecdotal reports of update-related failures do not establish a defect across all Samsung models.

The five-minute triage
- Raise volume on the TV or source device, the soundbar, and any streaming box, console, or disc player.
- Confirm mute is off on both the TV and soundbar.
- Press Source and wait after each change. Samsung says a source change can take approximately 4–5 seconds before audio appears: Samsung’s no-sound troubleshooting guide.
- Read the display. Labels vary, but
D.INcommonly indicates optical or an ARC-related input,TV ARC/eARCindicates an ARC transition,HDMIindicates a direct HDMI input, andBT/BT PAIRINGindicates Bluetooth mode. - Disconnect headphones, Bluetooth devices, receivers, and other equipment that could have redirected audio.
- Power off the TV, soundbar, and source. Unplug them briefly, reconnect, and turn them on in this order: TV, soundbar, then external source. Samsung recommends powering down connected equipment when it interferes with ARC/eARC.
Check the TV’s audio output
On many Samsung TVs, open Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output and select the connected soundbar. Older sets may use Audio/Sound → Speaker Select or Speaker Settings; labels differ by model.
Disconnect the soundbar and select TV Speaker, then play a known-working source. The result narrows the fault:
| TV speakers | Soundbar | Likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Silent | Silent | TV or source problem may be upstream. |
| Working | Silent | TV output, cable, selected source, or soundbar input problem. |
| Working | Works from phone/Bluetooth | TV-to-soundbar connection or settings problem. |
| Working | Silent on every input | Soundbar firmware or hardware becomes more likely. |
Samsung notes that a TV with no audio may itself be the root cause: official U.S. guidance.

Verify the ports
Connect the TV port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT, HDMI TO TV, ARC, or eARC/ARC, depending on the model. A normal TV HDMI input is not the return-audio connection. ARC uses one HDMI cable between those labeled ports.

Enable HDMI-CEC
On Samsung TVs, CEC is called Anynet+. The usual path is Settings → All Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC). Older and non-Samsung TVs use different names and paths.
Watch for the ARC transition
- Select
D.INon the soundbar. - Wait several seconds for the display to change to
TV ARCoreARC. - If it remains on
D.IN, ARC negotiation has not completed.
This display test is described in Samsung’s U.S. support flow: Samsung no-sound troubleshooting.
Replace the cable and simplify the chain
Try a known-good high-speed HDMI cable. Then disconnect consoles, Blu-ray players, AV receivers, HDMI switches, streaming boxes, and CEC adapters. Test only TV ↔ soundbar, and power-cycle both devices. External HDMI equipment can disrupt ARC/eARC negotiation.

Check eARC and format settings
On supported Samsung TVs, eARC is generally under Settings → All Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → HDMI-eARC Mode → Auto. If compatibility is uncertain, temporarily choose PCM or another format supported by both devices. Menu names and eARC availability vary by model: Samsung Canada’s connection guidance.

- PICK UP EVERY PIECE OF DIALOGUE: Hear voices more clearly with automatically amplified dialogue - allowing it to stand out so you don't miss a word, no matter what you're watching.
If you use optical
- Connect the TV’s Digital Audio Out/Optical Out to the soundbar’s optical input.
- Remove both protective plastic caps and seat the plugs fully.
- Select
D.INon the soundbar. - Set the TV output to optical or external speaker.
- For a compatibility test, set digital audio output to PCM.
Optical bypasses HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC. If it works while ARC does not, the speakers and amplifier are probably operating; investigate the HDMI cable, TV port, settings, or handshake.
Use Bluetooth as an independent test
Pair a phone
- Change the soundbar away from Bluetooth.
- Enter
BT PAIRINGwith the remote’s PAIR button or the model’s source/multi-function control. - Open Bluetooth settings on the phone and select the soundbar.
- Play a locally stored or known-working track. Some models may request PIN
0000.
Model controls vary; Samsung’s Bluetooth instructions are at Samsung Canada support.
Interpret the result
- Bluetooth works: the basic audio path is alive; focus on the TV, cable, ARC, optical connection, or TV output.
- It pairs but is silent: check phone volume, selected phone output, soundbar volume, and source mode.
- It drops repeatedly: move the phone closer and away from routers, microwaves, metal surfaces, obstructions, and other interference sources.
- No pairing and no wired audio: firmware or hardware trouble is more plausible.
If the soundbar uses Wi-Fi or SmartThings
Wi-Fi-capable TV and soundbar setups must use the same wireless network. Restart the router, temporarily move the soundbar closer, and confirm the network has internet access. If the bar disappeared from the app, open SmartThings (or the applicable Samsung Sound app) and use Devices → Add (+) → Add device → Scan, then select it again under the TV’s Sound Output. Basic HDMI, optical, and Bluetooth models do not require Wi-Fi or SmartThings.

- SEAMLESS SWITCHING: Connect up to two devices to your soundbar, like your smartphone and computer, via Bluetooth and switch between them seamlessly. Play your favorite music from either device without disconnecting.**
Do not reset first: it erases Bluetooth pairings, Wi-Fi credentials, app registration, custom sound settings, calibration, and possibly wireless-speaker pairing. Use this order:
- Power-cycle the system.
- Test a second source.
- Replace or bypass the cable.
- Re-select source and TV output.
- Re-pair Bluetooth or wireless speakers.
- Apply firmware only from the exact model page.
- Perform that model’s documented factory reset.
Reset combinations differ across Samsung generations. Use the manual for your model rather than a universal button sequence. Manuals, downloads, warranty lookup, and repair requests are available through Samsung U.S. Support.
Subwoofer and rear-speaker diagnosis
- Confirm each wireless unit has power and check its indicator light.
- Move the unit temporarily closer to the main bar.
- Keep it away from routers, microwaves, metal surfaces, and other interference.
- Run the model-specific wireless pairing procedure.
- Test the main bar itself before considering a complete replacement.
When hardware failure is probable
Service becomes reasonable when the bar powers on, the TV or source works through another output, multiple known-good cables have been tried, at least two independent sources fail, the correct source is selected, Bluetooth or a direct wired input also fails, and a model-specific reset does not restore sound. A second compatible TV or source is an especially useful confirmation.
Possible causes include an amplifier or power-stage failure, main or I/O board damage, a damaged HDMI or optical port, an internal speaker fault, power-supply failure, wireless-module failure, or an intermittent thermal component. Do not open the unit unless you are qualified to repair mains-powered electronics; use Samsung support or an authorized repair route.
Repair or replace?
Repair or service is favored when
- The unit is under warranty.
- Bluetooth or another input still works and only ARC/eARC has failed.
- It is a premium multi-speaker system.
- The problem followed a TV, cable, or source-device change.
- Only the subwoofer or rear speakers need pairing.
Replacement is more reasonable when
- No input produces sound after independent-source testing and reset.
- The unit is out of warranty and the estimate is a substantial fraction of a comparable replacement.
- The model lacks features you now need, such as eARC or current app support.
- Parts are unavailable or intermittent failures keep returning.
Samsung’s announced 2026 U.S. list prices were $1,999.99 for HW-Q990H, $1,499.99 for HW-Q900H, $1,099.99 for HW-Q800H, and $999.99 for HW-QS90H. These are announcement list prices, not guaranteed sale or checkout prices: Samsung Newsroom’s 2026 lineup announcement. Do not buy a replacement until Bluetooth or a second-source test shows that the existing bar itself is failing.
Quick Recap
Quick decision tree
- Does it power on? If no, test the outlet, cord, and power strip; service it if still dead.
- Does Bluetooth from a phone work? If yes, investigate the TV, cable, ARC, optical path, or source device.
- Does another wired source work? If yes, the original device, TV, cable, or port is implicated.
- Do all independent inputs fail? Follow the exact-model reset procedure; if silence remains, request service.
