The Race to Find the World’s Oldest Plant: What Welwitschia’s Age Tells Us

Welwitschia may live for millennia, but no oldest living plant has been confirmed. Here is how Kew’s age estimate differs from a 2026 radiocarbon measurement.

Welwitschia mirabilis may live for millennia, but no definitive oldest individual has been established. Kew says some plants are thought to be more than 2,000 years old, while a 2026 study directly dated the oldest sampled tissue in one moderately sized dead plant to 531 ± 20 radiocarbon years. Those figures describe different kinds of evidence—not a confirmed record and its runner-up.

How old is the oldest Welwitschia?

There is no securely established age for the oldest living Welwitschia. The best-known estimate comes from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: some plants are thought to be over 2,000 years old, but Kew cautions that exact ages are difficult to measure. It is an estimate, not the result of a precisely dated record specimen. Kew’s species profile gives that qualified figure.

A 2026 study used a more systematic approach on one dead plant. Sarah L. F. Martin and colleagues dated the oldest tissue they sampled—at the base of the plant’s caudex—to 531 ± 20 radiocarbon years. The specimen was moderately sized; the result does not date the species’ oldest living individual. The authors describe the measurement as a basis for estimating larger plants in future work, not as a record for Welwitschia. Martin and colleagues’ 2026 study in Radiocarbon reports the measurement and sampling method.

The difference matters because dating a long-lived plant depends on which tissue is sampled. The 2026 paper notes that earlier estimates often did not describe a method for ensuring the oldest tissue was tested. It reviews a prior reported date of 920 ± 20 radiocarbon years, but says the sampling strategy was not detailed enough to show whether the oldest tissue had been dated. The paper also cautions that a much-repeated age estimate for the largest plants became a “mythical fact” through repetition, rather than a well-documented measurement.

Does that make Welwitschia the oldest plant in the world?

Not on the available evidence. “Oldest plant” can mean a directly dated individual, an age inferred from growth or other proxies, a clonal colony, or the age of an entire evolutionary lineage. Those are not interchangeable comparisons. The sources here do not establish a global ranking across those categories, nor do they identify the oldest living Welwitschia.

The 2026 radiocarbon result is valuable because it explains what was sampled and how the age was determined. Kew’s over-2,000-year statement remains a qualified estimate for some plants. Neither claim alone settles a worldwide oldest-plant contest.

Why does Welwitschia have only two leaves?

Welwitschia mirabilis is a gymnosperm in the gnetophyte lineage, native to desert and dry shrubland in southwestern Angola and northwestern to west-central Namibia. It is generally found within a few hundred kilometres of the coast. Kew describes it as a dwarf tree or shrub, usually under one metre tall, though some plants can reach two metres. Kew’s Plants of the World Online profile records its range and growth form.

It produces just two leaves, which grow continuously from the base of the stem throughout the plant’s life rather than being replaced. As the long leaves weather, they split and fray into strips. This wear can make a single pair appear to be many separate leaves. Male and female cones grow on separate plants, so Welwitschia is dioecious.

A 2021 genome study assembled a chromosome-level genome of 6.8 Gb/1C and reported an ancient whole-genome duplication in the plant’s lineage about 86 million years ago. That is an event in evolutionary history—not the age of any individual Welwitschia. The genome study in Nature Communications describes the assembly and its findings.

How does it survive in the Namib Desert?

Welwitschia’s survival is not simply a matter of tolerating drought. Kew says its leaves capture moisture from coastal sea fog, while its long taproot searches for underground water. The plant can also contribute moisture and some nutrients to ungulates during severe drought; birds, reptiles, and arthropods use it for shelter or nesting.

What threatens Welwitschia?

Kew describes broad, currently abundant populations, but also notes slow growth and low recruitment. Fungal infection in female cones and seeds can severely reduce seed viability. Other reported pressures include damage from off-road vehicles, wild-plant collection, and overgrazing.

Plants are protected in national parks and communal conservancies in Namibia and Angola. Kew also says illegal trade is monitored under CITES and that Namibia’s Nature Conservation Ordinance provides protection. Kew describes the species as monitored through the IUCN Sampled Red List Index for Plants; that is not a completed IUCN Red List category. Its profile says the range and currently abundant populations do not suggest the species is threatened, alongside the pressures it reports.

Can you see Welwitschia in the wild?

Yes. Kew describes Welwitschia as a tourist attraction and notes excursions in Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park to see large plants. Viewing them on a guided excursion is a way to appreciate their scale and habitat without disturbing slow-growing wild specimens. Check local park guidance and current tour availability before planning a visit.

Can Welwitschia be grown at home?

Kew’s cultivation notes describe specialist requirements rather than an easy houseplant. A deep pot accommodates the taproot; loam-based compost with extra grit provides drainage; and the plant needs full light and careful watering. Kew warns that the root system is delicate and does not tolerate disturbance. Seed propagation is possible, but raising seedlings onward is difficult.

These horticultural notes do not establish a safe or suitable source of plants or seeds. They are not a reason to collect wild specimens; wild collection is among the pressures Kew reports.
