On a bowl gouge, the grind is the tool’s overall front profile; the bevel is the angled surface at the tip. Together, profile and bevel angle affect which cuts you can make, how the tool contacts the wood, and how it must be sharpened. Any bowl-gouge profile can make a push cut, but pull cuts require a fingernail grind, according to WOOD magazine’s guide to the technique.
Grind and bevel: two different features
The bevel sits at the lower tip of the bowl gouge. The wings extend from the bevel around the flute and along the remainder of the grind. In other words, “grind” describes the tool’s overall front profile, while “bevel” identifies the angled surface that can rub against the wood during a cut.
That distinction matters because the profile affects the cuts the tool can make, while the bevel angle changes how the tool approaches the wood and how far it can reach into a bowl.
How bevel angle changes access and cutting
WOOD magazine measures bevel angle from the bottom of the flute, treated as 0°. Its comparison of 45° and 80° describes different task-based advantages, not a universally best angle.

- Material: HSS blade and beech wood handle
- Size: Total length: 22.4 inch; blade length: 9 inch; handle length:13.4 inch
- Blade: High Speed Steel blades outlast high carbon steel and sharper (Hardness: HRC60)
- Handle: The handle is made of wood beech. High hardness, can be used for a long time

| Bevel angle | Advantage described by WOOD | Trade-off or use |
|---|---|---|
| 45° | More acute and efficient, with less tear-out. | Compared with 80°, it offers less ability to rub the bevel deeper inside a bowl. |
| 80° | Lets the bevel rub deeper into a bowl and moves the shaft away from the rim, creating room to maneuver. | WOOD contrasts its access and clearance with the efficiency and reduced tear-out associated with 45°. |
Choose the angle in light of the cut and the shape of the bowl: a more acute angle favors efficiency and less tear-out, while a steeper angle can improve access and shaft clearance deeper in the bowl.
Push cuts and pull cuts
Push cut: guide the tool with the bevel
In a push cut, the turner advances the gouge while the bevel rubs the wood. That contact helps guide the direction of the cut. A bowl gouge with any profile can make a push cut.
Rank #2
- ✅ Premium M2 HSS Blades with 60 HRC Hardness--Crafted from high-grade M2 high-speed steel, the bowl turning gouge features 60 HRC high hardness for exceptional wear resistance and long-lasting sharpness. It holds cutting edge far better than ordinary carbon steel chisels, reduces frequent sharpening and delivers smooth clean wood cuts for hardwood & softwood turning projects.
- ✅ Precision Side Grind Cutting Edge for Bowl Turning--Professionally ground side bevel design specially optimized for bowl hollowing work. The unique side grind geometry prevents rubbing on workpiece inner wall, allows effortless deep hollowing, ideal for making wooden bowls, cups, curved spindle crafts on wood lathe. 3 common sizes:3/8"(10mm),1/2"(12mm),5/8"(16mm) meet most daily turning demands.
- ✅ Extra Long 230mm Blade & Ergonomic Beech Handle--Features extended 230mm/9-inch blade length for deep hollow access on large bowls, paired with 340mm/13.4" solid beech wood handle. Polished solid beech grip offers non-slip comfortable holding, effectively buffers cutting vibration to ease long-hour wood turning fatigue.
- ✅ Sturdy Custom Wooden Storage Case Included--All 3pcs turning gouges are neatly stored inside a well-fitted solid wood storage box with metal lock buckle. Prevents chisel edge damage during storage & transportation, easy to organize your lathe tools and convenient for outdoor woodworking carry.
- ✅ Versatile Woodturning Tools for All Skill Levels--Perfect wood lathe accessories for hobbyists, DIY crafters and professional woodturners. Widely applied in spindle turning, bowl hollowing, curved workpiece shaping on all standard wood lathes, great gift choice for woodworking enthusiasts.
Pull cut: cut with the wing
In a pull cut, the turner pulls the tool with both hands and cuts with the wing; the bevel does not touch the wood. Ruegsegger’s WOOD article states: “A bowl gouge with any profile can make push cuts, but only fingernail-grind tools can make pull cuts.”
WOOD describes pull cuts as easier to control and generally less bumpy, but they can tear out grain. To reduce tear-out along the bark line, the article recommends pushing from the rim to the bottom of the bark line.
Rank #3
- Sharp: The bowl chisel has been pre-sharpened with a CBN grinding wheel, ready to use right out of the box.
- More durable: M2 HSS is cryogenically treated, the hardness and wear resistance are increased by 6-8 times, can hold an edge well.
- Extended handle: The beech wood handle is comfortable to use, non-slip and long enough
- Dimensions: Usable Flute Length 6.9" - Handle Length 15.55" - Overall Length 25.1";The shaft is 5/8" , flute is 1/2"

Grind profile and sharpening
| Profile | Cut availability described by WOOD | Sharpening implication |
|---|---|---|
| Square grind | Supports push cuts; the article does not identify it as a profile for pull cuts. | Easy to sharpen freehand. |
| Fingernail grind | Supports push cuts and is the profile WOOD identifies for pull cuts. | Requires a special grinder jig attachment. |
The pull-cut option therefore comes with a sharpening trade-off: a fingernail profile offers that cut, but maintaining it takes a jig attachment rather than straightforward freehand sharpening. WOOD does not specify a brand, model, or grinder interface for the attachment, so check compatibility with your grinder before choosing one.

- For a push cut: either profile can work; the bevel rubs the wood and helps direct the tool.
- For a pull cut: use a fingernail-grind bowl gouge and cut with the wing without rubbing the bevel.
- For deeper bowl access or rim clearance: consider the 80° bevel advantage described by WOOD.
- For efficiency and less tear-out: consider the 45° bevel advantage described by WOOD.
- For sharpening simplicity: a square grind is easier to sharpen freehand; a fingernail grind needs a grinder jig attachment.
These are the trade-offs presented in Craig Ruegsegger’s WOOD magazine article, updated July 18, 2022: The Push and Pull of Grinds and Bevels.
