Check the strip’s manual first: slot layouts and fastener requirements vary, and this method is not appropriate for a strip that is not designed for it.
How the keyhole-slot method works
Keyhole slots have a wider opening that fits over a screw head and a narrower section that catches the screw shaft. With compatible slots and screws, the strip can hang against a wall or desk underside without drilling through or modifying its electrical enclosure. Tripp Lite/Eaton manuals describe hanging compatible strips on screws through keyhole slots on mounting clips; the manufacturer says users must select hardware suitable for the mounting surface.
Start by unplugging the strip. Find its factory slots and follow the model-specific mounting instructions. Hold it in the intended position, transfer the slot spacing to the surface with careful measurement or a template, then choose screws whose heads and shafts fit the slots and whose type suits the substrate. There is no universal screw size for every strip and surface.
- Check the location. Confirm the strip will remain accessible and that a desk screw will not emerge through the top.
- Mark the mounting points. Use the strip’s slots or the manufacturer’s template; do not guess at spacing.
- Install compatible screws. Follow the strip instructions and use fasteners suited to the wall or desk material.
- Test the fit while unplugged. Engage the wide slot openings over the screw heads and slide the strip into its retaining position. Check that ordinary plug insertion or removal will not make it slide free.
- Reconnect and check access. Keep the switch, reset button, and breaker reachable. Route the supply cord without pulling it taut or using it to support the strip.
Choose a mounting method for the surface

Adhesive holder
3M describes its Command Power Strip Holder 17310 as suitable for mounting under a desk or on a wall, for power strips up to 15 inches long. The product page excludes surfaces including wallpaper, fabric, textured walls, brick, and rough surfaces. Follow the holder’s directions and check that the specific strip fits.

Include plugs and adapters when considering support: they add weight and can pull on a mounted strip. A strip’s empty weight alone does not establish whether an adhesive mount is suitable, and no universal adhesive load limit applies to every holder and surface.
Clamp-on tray
A clamp-on cable tray can hold a strip beneath a desk without fastening it directly to the desk. Check the tray’s dimensions, capacity, and clamp range against the desk, and make sure the mounted strip remains reachable.

Electrical and installation checks
- Do not drill into or modify the strip’s enclosure; use only its designed mounting features.
- Do not exceed the amperage rating marked on the strip. Tripp Lite/Eaton also advises leaving enough clearance for the breaker to operate.
- Keep controls accessible and avoid a cord route that creates tension or transfers the strip’s weight to the cord.
- If the mounting surface, fastener fit, or holder compatibility is uncertain, consult the strip and mounting-product instructions rather than relying on a guessed screw size or load rating.
Manufacturer instructions and product details
Tripp Lite/Eaton’s power-strip wall-mounting instructions state: “The user must supply other mounting hardware (screws, etc.) and determine its suitability for use with the chosen mounting surface.” Its wall-mounting and equipment connection instructions cover the marked amperage rating and breaker clearance. 3M lists the length and surface limits for its Command Power Strip Holder.
