The Oasa R1 Robotic Lawn Mower Hit 800% Funding in Under 12 Hours—What Happened Next?

The viral mower was Oasa’s R1, a proposed autonomous robotic reel mower that launched on Kickstarter on June 25–26, 2024. Oasa said it passed 800% of its $50,000 goal in less than 12 hours—meaning roughly $400,000 had been pledged, not that the mower was 800% better or discounted by 800%.

The campaign ultimately attracted more than $2 million in pledges. But crowdfunding success proved demand, not manufacturing readiness, delivery, reliability, or long-term support. Later reporting reproduced an apparent backer notice describing restructuring, manufacturing difficulties, and financial constraints, making the R1’s operational status an essential part of the story.

What was the Oasa R1?

The R1 was marketed as a different kind of robotic lawn mower: a robotic reel mower rather than a conventional rotary robot mower.

A reel mower uses a cylindrical reel of blades that cuts grass against a fixed bedknife. The action is often compared with scissors and can produce a clean, precise cut when the grass is maintained at a suitable height. Oasa also promoted a self-resharpening blade concept, intended to reduce routine sharpening and replacement.

Oasa described the R1 as the “world’s first” consumer robotic reel mower. That is a company claim, not an independently verified industry fact. Its appeal was clear, however: autonomous mowing combined with a mechanism associated with finely maintained, golf-course-style turf.

The mower was also designed around LiDAR and vision-based mapping. Oasa’s pitch was that homeowners could establish virtual boundaries without installing conventional perimeter wire or relying on RTK GPS.

BGR’s launch coverage reported the R1’s unusual cutting system, mapping approach, cutting range, and early crowdfunding milestone.

What did “800% funded” actually mean?

The Kickstarter goal was $50,000. Reaching 800% funded therefore represented approximately $400,000 in pledges. It was a measure of money pledged against the original goal—not a performance rating.

The early milestone was attributed to Oasa in launch coverage. Campaign-tracking pages provide a fuller picture: the campaign ended on August 14, 2024, with final totals reported at approximately $2.13 million to $2.33 million, depending on the tracker and when its data was captured. That corresponds to roughly 4,263%–4,659% of the original goal.

The important distinction is between financial momentum and product validation. A campaign can attract thousands of backers before a company has solved tooling, supply chains, firmware, quality control, logistics, or after-sales service.

Feature Advertised information What it means in practice
Cutting width About 13 inches / 335 mm A relatively narrow cutting path can suit smaller areas but may require more passes.
Cutting height About 0.8–4 inches / 20–100 mm The low end appealed to finely managed turf; the correct setting depends on grass type and lawn condition.
Navigation LiDAR, vision, and 3D auto-mapping Intended to reduce installation work, but not a guarantee of flawless boundary recognition.
Boundary setup Wire-free virtual boundaries Still requires accurate mapping, suitable terrain, and periodic adjustment when the yard changes.
Edge cutting Claimed operation within about 2 inches of fences A marketing claim requiring real-yard testing around irregular edges and obstacles.
Blade system Self-resharpening reel blades Potentially less routine sharpening, but not maintenance-free operation.
Weather behavior Rain detection and return-to-dock behavior Actual reliability would depend on sensors, firmware, and dock access.
Slope About 45% in secondary campaign summaries Real traction varies with moisture, soil, tire condition, and direction of travel.
Controls App scheduling and remote control Useful only while the app, firmware, connectivity, and any required services remain supported.

Additional campaign and technical summaries are available through Kicktraq, a secondary technical presentation, and Notebookcheck’s campaign-era report.

Why a robotic reel mower was interesting

The R1’s cutting mechanism addressed a real distinction in lawn care. Reel mowing can make a clean cut when blades are sharp, the turf is even, and the mower is used frequently. That is attractive to homeowners who care about a short, uniform finish rather than simply keeping grass under control.

A lower cutting range could also appeal to owners of carefully managed turf. The wire-free mapping concept promised easier installation than digging in perimeter wire, while the self-resharpening design suggested a lower blade-maintenance burden.

Those advantages belong to the concept, though—not automatically to the complete autonomous machine. A reel mower is generally less forgiving of:

  • Overgrown grass that has not been cut regularly.
  • Wet, flattened, coarse, or tangled growth.
  • Sticks, stones, acorns, heavy leaf litter, and other debris.
  • Deep ruts, uneven ground, muddy areas, and poorly defined transitions.

“Self-resharpening” also does not mean that the cutting components never need cleaning, adjustment, inspection, or eventual replacement. A damaged reel or bedknife can still affect cut quality.

Wire-free mapping versus perimeter wire

LiDAR and vision-based mapping can reduce installation labor. There is no physical boundary cable to bury, locate, repair, or move when a garden bed changes. That is particularly attractive on properties undergoing landscaping work.

But a virtual boundary depends on the mower correctly interpreting its surroundings. Potential trouble spots include narrow corridors, reflective surfaces, dense shade, steep drop-offs, changed landscaping, and visually ambiguous lawn edges. Dirty sensors, tall grass, glare, or software errors can also affect navigation.

Perimeter-wire systems are more laborious to install and can develop wire breaks. Their advantage is a more established and deterministic boundary once installed correctly. Neither approach is universally superior: the relevant question is how reliably the complete system handles a particular property.

Who would have been a good fit?

The R1’s intended audience was not every homeowner with grass. It was better suited in principle to a regularly maintained, relatively even lawn with clearly defined boundaries and limited debris.

Potentially suitable properties

  • Flat or moderately sloped lawns.
  • Grass maintained on a frequent schedule.
  • Clear transitions around beds, paths, fences, and ponds.
  • Few narrow passages or disconnected lawn zones.
  • Owners willing to map the property and troubleshoot a new product.

Higher-risk properties

  • Lawns that routinely become tall or overgrown.
  • Rough terrain, loose gravel, deep ruts, or muddy sections.
  • Many narrow corridors or separate areas.
  • Yards containing toys, hoses, pet waste, sticks, stones, or heavy leaf litter.
  • Commercial sites requiring predictable uptime.
  • Buyers who need local repairs, guaranteed parts, or an established warranty process.

Common failure points to consider

Docking

A mower may fail to dock because the approach is obstructed, the dock is uneven or poorly placed, charging contacts are dirty, or navigation software cannot reliably retrace the route.

Mapping and boundaries

Virtual boundaries can become inaccurate after landscaping changes. Narrow transitions, reflective objects, tall grass, sensor contamination, and poor visibility can all create mapping problems.

Coverage

A mower can navigate successfully and still leave missed strips. Route planning, zone configuration, cutting width, and schedule frequency determine whether the lawn is actually covered evenly.

Cutting performance

The reel system’s clean-cut promise is most vulnerable when grass is wet, tall, coarse, or contaminated with debris. A robotic reel mower is not necessarily a tool for reclaiming an abandoned lawn.

Slopes and traction

A stated 45% slope capability, reported in secondary campaign material, should not be treated as a universal guarantee. Wet grass, soft soil, tire wear, and travel direction can make a major difference.

Software and batteries

Long-term ownership depends on app support, firmware updates, replacement batteries, charging hardware, reels, bedknives, wheels, and electronics. A technically advanced mower becomes difficult to own if those parts or services disappear.

What happened after the campaign?

The campaign’s final funding total was impressive, but the later story became less certain. A May 2025 report reproduced what it described as an official backer message concerning team restructuring, manufacturing complexity, and financial constraints. The report said continuing operations was no longer sustainable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That account should be treated cautiously because the evidence available here is a secondary report rather than a directly confirmed current statement from Oasa or Kickstarter. It is nevertheless important enough that prospective buyers should not treat the R1 as an ordinary, established retail appliance.

The supplied reporting does not establish that every backer lost money, nor does it independently document the outcome for every order. It also does not justify calling the product a scam. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the campaign’s success did not guarantee production, delivery, customer support, or continuing operations.

For the same reason, the campaign-era price—reported by secondary coverage at about $1,199—should not be mistaken for a current 2026 retail price. Current official availability and support cannot responsibly be confirmed from the available evidence.

Questions to ask before backing or buying any crowdfunded mower

  1. Has the promised configuration actually shipped?
  2. Is the company operating and answering support requests?
  3. Are reels, bedknives, batteries, wheels, docks, and electronics available?
  4. Who performs warranty repairs, and where?
  5. Does the mower support your grass type and intended cutting height?
  6. How does it handle disconnected zones and narrow passages?
  7. What happens if Wi-Fi, the app, or cloud services stop working?
  8. Is local control available?
  9. How does it behave near children, pets, ponds, steps, roads, and sidewalks?
  10. Are shipping, taxes, import charges, and accessories included?
  11. Is the product a finished appliance or still effectively a development project?

Should buyers choose an established mower instead?

For readers who need a mower they can order, repair, and rely on now, an established product is generally the safer category. It may offer less novel cutting technology, but a mature ecosystem can provide clearer documentation, replacement parts, dealer support, warranty procedures, and a longer record of firmware updates.

Potential alternatives to investigate include Husqvarna Automower, Mammotion LUBA, Segway Navimow, and Worx Landroid. These are not direct replacements for the R1’s reel-cutting concept, and exact prices, availability, and capabilities vary by country and model. Compare boundary reliability, terrain performance, service access, battery replacement, and total ownership cost—not just navigation claims.

Verdict

The Oasa R1 was an unusually ambitious mower concept: a proposed autonomous reel mower with low-height cutting, self-resharpening blades, LiDAR-vision mapping, and wire-free boundaries. That combination explains why it attracted extraordinary attention and millions of dollars in pledges.

But 800% funding in under 12 hours measured enthusiasm, not quality. By the time later reports raised concerns about Oasa’s manufacturing and financial position, the central lesson was clear: crowdfunding can validate interest without validating delivery or long-term ownership.

For an early adopter interested specifically in robotic reel mowing, the R1 remains a fascinating case study. For a homeowner who needs dependable mowing, parts, service, and a clear warranty today, an established robotic-mower ecosystem is the more defensible choice unless Oasa’s current availability and support can be independently confirmed.
