These tools are designed for coarse threads in wood; an ordinary metal tap-and-die set is not a substitute.
What tools cut threads in wood?
A wood-threading kit pairs two cutters. The threadbox—also called a screwbox or die—cuts the male thread on round stock. The matching tap cuts the female thread inside a hole. Check that both tools are included and intended to work together; some kits also offer a bottoming tap for blind holes. ICS’s 2026 catalog lists sets in 1/2-, 3/4-, and 1-inch sizes. Axminster’s product page describes starter and bottoming taps and additional sizes. Availability and included components vary, so check the specific kit’s instructions and contents.
Do not use metal tap-and-die drill charts to choose a wood pilot hole. IRWIN’s tap-and-die directions cover metalworking tools, while wood-threading kits specify their own coarse thread geometry and hole preparation.
How to cut external threads on a wooden dowel
- Choose suitable stock. Use a straight, round, straight-grained hardwood dowel sized for the threadbox. It should fit the guide without being loose or tight. Avoid end grain for the strongest threads, as Woodcraft advises in its wood-threading instructions.
- Prepare and secure the dowel. Chamfer the entering end, then clamp the dowel vertically in a vise with protective jaws. Woodcraft describes applying a light coating of oil; follow the chosen kit’s directions for lubrication and preparation. Axminster also suggests soaking dowels in oil, but treat that as product guidance rather than a universal requirement for every wood or finish.
- Start square and cut. Set the threadbox squarely on the dowel and turn it to begin the spiral. Keep the tool aligned as it advances. The kit’s instructions take precedence for the exact cutting method.
How to cut matching internal threads
Drill the pilot hole for your kit
Pilot-hole size is specific to the kit and intended hole. Woodcraft describes a hole 1/8 inch smaller than the dowel for the kit in its procedure. Axminster lists these recommendations for its kits; its page does not state a publication date:

| 3/4 inch | 5/8 inch |
| 1 inch | 7/8 inch |
| 1-1/2 inch | 1-3/8 inches |
These are Axminster product specifications, not a universal chart. Use the instructions supplied with your own kit rather than assuming that the same reduction applies across brands or sizes.
Tap the hole
- Secure the workpiece and place the tap vertically in the pilot hole.
- Turn the tap to cut, keeping it aligned with the hole. Reverse the cutting motion regularly to clear chips.
- For a through hole, support the exit side with scrap to help reduce tear-out.
- For a blind hole, use a compatible bottoming tap to cut the thread closer to the hole’s bottom. A starter tap does not reach as close; whether a bottoming tap is included or sold separately depends on the kit.
Where threaded wood is useful
Wood threads let wooden parts tighten, adjust, or connect without relying on a metal fastener for every joint. Woodcraft lists antique planes, handscrews, bar clamps, vises, and veneer presses as applications. ICS also gives lamps, stools, chairs, and broom or mop handles as examples. The Dominy collection at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library documents historical screwboxes for cutting spiral threads on wooden cylinders and taps for threaded receptacles used with clamps, vises, and other tools. These examples show the technique’s uses, not a quantified strength rating.
