The LHC Is Heating Homes—But Not Quite the Way You Think

Yes, CERN is using waste heat from the Large Hadron Collider’s cooling infrastructure to help heat a new residential and commercial development in Ferney-Voltaire, France. The heat does not come directly from particle collisions. Instead, hot water that has absorbed heat from accelerator equipment passes through heat exchangers and transfers that energy to a separate district-heating network.

The system became operational in January 2026. It is a genuine example of industrial waste-heat recovery—but not evidence that the LHC is heating an entire town, selling consumer energy, or operating carbon-neutral.

Where the LHC heat goes

The project connects CERN’s LHC Point 8, home to the LHCb experiment, with a district-heating network serving a new residential and commercial area in Ferney-Voltaire, just across the French border.

Buildings are not connected to the collider by individual pipes. CERN supplies recovered energy to the local network, which distributes heat to participating homes and businesses alongside other heat sources. The available information does not establish that every existing home in Ferney-Voltaire is connected.

CERN says the network is designed to serve the equivalent of several thousand homes. An older CERN sustainability paper referred to heating the homes of up to 8,000 people; that is a population-based description, not evidence of 8,000 dwelling units. (CERN’s current project description; earlier sustainability paper)

How the system works

The basic process is straightforward:

  1. CERN equipment produces heat during operation.
  2. Water circulating through the cooling system absorbs that heat.
  3. Instead of rejecting all of the heat through cooling towers, part of the warm-water flow is diverted.
  4. Two heat exchangers transfer energy to the local heating network.
  5. The municipal circuit distributes the heat to buildings.

The two water systems remain separate. Water that has circulated through CERN’s machinery is not simply sent into household radiators. The heat crosses a physical boundary inside the heat exchangers, allowing CERN’s cooling circuit and the district-heating circuit to operate independently.

That makes the project similar in principle to recovering heat from a data centre, factory or wastewater facility. The useful resource is the heat rejected by the cooling process—not the headline activity taking place inside the facility.

It is not recycled collision energy

The phrase “the LHC heats homes” can easily create the wrong impression. The project does not capture the energy of proton collisions, radiation or particle beams and pipe it into houses.

The recovered heat comes from industrial cooling loads associated with CERN’s equipment, including accelerator-related and cryogenic installations. Some LHC components operate at extremely low temperatures, but the facility also has warm-side cooling systems. Those systems remove heat and provide the practical source for the district-heating connection.

A useful comparison is a large server room: its computers perform the important work, but the heat-recovery opportunity comes from the cooling system removing heat from the servers. The same distinction applies at CERN.

The project’s key numbers

Measure Figure
LHC circumference 27 kilometres
Relevant CERN location Point 8
Heat exchangers Two
Rated capacity per exchanger 5 MW
Current CERN contribution Up to 5 MW
Theoretical CERN-side capacity Up to 10 MW
Expected Point 8 recovery About 20 GWh per year from 2026

The distinction between capacity and delivery matters. Two 5-MW heat exchangers provide a theoretical combined capacity of 10 MW, but CERN says Ferney-Voltaire is currently using up to 5 MW. The system will not necessarily operate at its maximum continuously; output depends on CERN’s operating conditions, the heating network and local demand.

CERN estimates that around 20 GWh of energy per year will be recovered from Point 8 from 2026. That is a project estimate, not a guarantee that 20 GWh will be delivered every year under all operating conditions. (CERN’s energy report)

What happens during the LHC’s long shutdown?

The LHC stopped its final Run 3 collisions on June 27, 2026, before entering Long Shutdown 3, or LS3, for a multi-year upgrade programme. That does not mean every Point 8 installation becomes inactive.

CERN says some Point 8 equipment will continue to require cooling during LS3. As a result, the heating network is expected to receive between 1 and 5 MW from CERN during the shutdown, apart from five months distributed across the shutdown period when the supply will not be available.

Amazon Basics Portable Space Heater with Remote Control, Adjustable Thermostat, Indoor Use, Energy-Saving Setting, LED Display, Classic Wood Casing, 1500W, 12"D x 13"W x 16"H, Brown
  • Elegant wood finish portable space heater with adjustable electronic thermostat and easy-to-read LED display (measures 13 x 12 x 16 inches; weighs 23.5 pounds)

This is also why it would be inaccurate to say that local homes depend on active particle collisions for heat. The district network has other sources, and the recovered contribution is tied to the operation of cooling equipment rather than to collisions themselves. Is CERN selling heat?

“Sustainable side hustle” is a memorable headline metaphor, but it should not be taken literally. CERN’s published material presents the scheme as energy recovery and environmental management connected to local authorities and district-heating infrastructure.

CERN is supplying recovered energy to a local network. There is no evidence in the cited material that it has launched a consumer heating brand or operates the project as a profit-centred retail energy business. The project also requires substantial infrastructure: pipes, pumps, heat exchangers, controls, monitoring, maintenance and agreements between the industrial site, local authorities and heat-network operators.

Recovered heat is not automatically free heat. The energy may otherwise have been wasted, but the system needed to capture and transport it still has construction and operating costs. The reviewed sources do not publish a complete capital cost, tariff structure, payback period or revenue-sharing arrangement.

How much does it improve CERN’s environmental footprint?

The project should reduce the need for conventional heating energy in the connected development. CERN says it avoids the use of conventional sources such as gas and describes the potential benefit as preventing thousands of tonnes of CO2 emissions. Its public announcement does not provide the complete calculation, including the displaced fuel mix, occupancy assumptions or attribution method. (CERN’s project announcement)

The defensible conclusion is therefore narrower:

  • It recovers energy that would otherwise be rejected to the atmosphere.
  • It can reduce fossil-fuel use for local heating.
  • It creates a practical local benefit from existing industrial infrastructure.
  • It does not make CERN carbon-neutral or turn the LHC into a low-energy facility.

The LHC remains a large, electricity-intensive research installation. Waste-heat recovery improves how some of that energy is used; it does not erase the facility’s total electricity demand or wider environmental impacts.

Part of a wider CERN heat-recovery programme

The Ferney-Voltaire connection is one element of CERN’s broader energy-management work. Other projects include:

  • Prévessin Data Centre: a heat-recovery system intended to heat most buildings on the Prévessin site from winter 2026–2027.
  • LHC Point 1: a planned project to recover heat from cooling towers for buildings on CERN’s Meyrin site.
  • Efficiency measures: initiatives such as cryogenic “eco-mode”, building renovations and reductions in heating demand.

CERN estimates that the Prévessin and Meyrin projects together could save approximately 25–30 GWh per year from 2027. That figure is separate from the estimated 20 GWh per year for Point 8. (CERN energy management; CERN Environment Report 2023–2024)

Why this approach cannot be copied everywhere

Waste-heat recovery is most useful when a suitable heat source is close to a suitable heat demand. CERN and Ferney-Voltaire are a good match because Point 8 is near a new development with a district-heating network.

Future projects must assess several constraints:

  • Temperature: heat may be too cool for existing buildings without heat pumps or network upgrades.
  • Distance: long pipe runs increase construction cost and heat losses.
  • Network availability: a district-heating system must already exist or be built.
  • Seasonality: demand is high in winter but much lower in summer.
  • Operating schedules: the industrial source may be offline for maintenance or upgrades.
  • Reliability: networks need backup or complementary heat sources.
  • Governance: industrial operators, local authorities and consumers need workable agreements.

Research into waste-heat reuse for future accelerator facilities identifies temperature mismatch, distance, insufficient infrastructure and the absence of agreements with heat consumers as recurring barriers. (European Physical Journal Special Topics)

The project’s timeline

  • July 23, 2019: CERN announced an agreement with French local authorities to recover heat from Point 8 for a new Ferney-Voltaire development.
  • End of 2024: CERN reported that the final stage of its side of the connection had been completed.
  • December: the local heating network was inaugurated; the cited CERN material does not make the year sufficiently clear to state it more precisely here.
  • Mid-January 2026: recovered heat began supplying the network.
  • June 27, 2026: the LHC ended its final Run 3 collisions and entered LS3.
  • Winter 2026–2027: the Prévessin Data Centre project is scheduled to begin contributing heat on the Prévessin site.
  • From 2027: CERN expects combined savings of approximately 25–30 GWh annually from its Meyrin and Prévessin projects.
