The Importance of Proper Insulation in Garage Door Installation

Garage-door insulation can limit heat transfer, especially in attached garages, spaces below living areas, and workshops. Compare tested door performance—not just material R-value—and verify retrofit fit, added weight, and local requirements.

Proper garage-door insulation matters most when the garage shares a wall with conditioned rooms, sits below occupied space, or doubles as a workshop. It can reduce heat transfer and make the garage feel more stable, but it cannot guarantee a particular indoor temperature or utility-bill reduction. Choose based on how the space is used, the door’s tested whole-assembly performance, its construction, and the requirements for your location.

When garage-door insulation matters most

An insulated door is most relevant when the garage is attached to the house, located beneath a living area, or used regularly as a workspace. In these situations, limiting heat transfer through the large door surface may help moderate conditions in the garage and reduce heat exchange with adjacent spaces.

The benefit is not a guaranteed energy saving. No generally applicable savings figure or payback estimate is established here; results depend on the local climate, the rest of the building envelope, how the garage is used, and the door’s fit and installation. Insulating the door also does not, by itself, seal gaps around the perimeter or floor.

How to compare R-value and U-factor

R-value and U-factor describe thermal performance in different ways. R-value describes resistance to heat flow; higher is better. U-factor describes the rate of heat transfer through a tested door assembly; lower is better. Amarr says the two ratings are not mathematically associated because they use different methods. A material or insulation-section R-value should not be treated as interchangeable with a tested whole-door U-factor.

Reach Barrier Garage Door Insulation Kit, Reflective, 8x8 Single Door
  • SINGLE DOOR COVERAGE (8ft x 8ft): Designed to insulate one standard single garage door. For double-wide or two-car garage doors, purchase two kits for full coverage.
  • KIT COMES WITH 8 PRE-CUT PANELS: Each panel measures 24"x48" and includes 48 one-inch square adhesive pads. Each panel is 5/32 inch thick and has reflective film on both sides, with 2 layers of bubble between the layers.
  • RADIANT HEAT CONTROL: Reflective air insulation reduces radiant heat transfer for more consistent garage temperatures. Durable in extreme conditions, engineered to perform in high heat and humidity while maintaining insulation integrity over time.
  • COMPLETE DO-IT-YOURSELF KIT: Installation requires no special tools. Panels can be trimmed with scissors or a box knife. Make sure door surfaces are free of dirt, moisture, and oil before applying the adhesive squares.
  • HIGH-TEMPERATURE ADHESIVE PADS: Open-cell polyurethane foam pads are 1/8 inch thick with double-sided acrylic adhesive that conforms to multiple surfaces for secure attachment.

DASMA’s publication guidance says a tested installed-door U-factor should follow procedures referenced in the latest published ANSI/DASMA 105. Its guidance for an R-value calls for identifying it as calculated under TDS-163 and noting that actual R-value may vary. When comparing products, check the rating’s basis and what part of the door it represents. DASMA advises: “Always consult with individual manufacturers regarding specific building construction applications and garage door thermal performance.”

  • Ask what the number measures: the insulation material or section, or the complete installed door assembly.
  • Check the test or calculation basis: ratings produced by different methods are not direct equivalents.
  • Look for construction details: layers, insulation placement, thermal breaks, and the fit of the door all affect the decision.
  • Request model-specific documentation: Amarr describes the DASMA Thermal Performance Verification Program as using certified third-party testing and inspection for participating sectional-door manufacturers’ U-factor ratings. Participating models may carry the program badge.

For context, Amarr says its R-16 insulation is not twice as effective as R-8 and states a 5% reduction in heat flow and a 5% improvement in energy efficiency for that comparison. This is Amarr’s claim, not a universal conversion rule or a prediction of a homeowner’s energy savings.

What insulation construction changes

Polystyrene inserts

Clopay describes polystyrene as rigid panels fitted between steel panels or installed inside a single-layer door. The exact result depends on the door model and assembly, so the material name alone is not enough to compare performance.

Injected polyurethane

Clopay describes polyurethane as foam injected between door layers, where it expands and bonds to the frame. The company says polyurethane doors offer the highest R-values in its range. Clopay also describes thermal breaks as reducing heat transfer between the inner and outer door surfaces. These are manufacturer explanations and product claims; consult the specific model’s specifications and rating basis.

Published figures illustrate why product context matters: Clopay states R-values up to 20.4 for its Intellicore doors, while Amarr lists R-19.4 and a U-factor of 0.19 for its commercial 2742, a 2-inch triple-layer polyurethane door. The figures concern different products and their stated bases are not established as directly comparable here. Amarr’s 2742 is a commercial example, not a default residential target.

Choose a specification for your garage

There is no universal R-value that suits every garage. The Home Depot’s June 20, 2025 guide suggests R-7 to R-9 for attached unheated garages, R-10 to R-13 for heated garages, and at least R-14 for garages with living space above. These are retailer recommendations, not code requirements or universal thresholds.

  • EASY TO INSTALL- easy to install, very clean, finished look, Non toxic / Non carcinogenic.

Use those ranges only as a starting point for a conversation with the door manufacturer or a qualified installer. Compare candidate doors on the same basis:

  • Use and location: note whether the garage is attached, below occupied space, heated, or regularly used as a workspace.
  • Whole-assembly performance: ask for the tested U-factor and whether DASMA verification is identified.
  • R-value basis: determine whether it is a calculated section or material figure and how the manufacturer defines it.
  • Construction and fit: compare the insulation type, number of layers, thermal breaks, and how well the door fits its opening.
  • Project constraints: review installed cost, warranty, local code and fire requirements, and dealer availability.

Insulating an existing door: check fit and added weight

A garage-door insulation kit may work for some existing doors, but compatibility is not universal. The Home Depot’s DIY guide describes kits that may include pre-cut insulation and tape or retention fasteners. It advises measuring each panel because dimensions can differ, cutting material to fit, and using the supplied attachment method as directed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the door model and ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer whether it can accept an aftermarket insulation kit.
  2. Confirm attachment and clearance so the material and fasteners do not interfere with door movement or hardware.
  3. Check the added weight with the manufacturer or installer before fitting insulation; do not assume the existing door system can safely accommodate it.
  4. Follow the kit instructions for measurements, cutting, and fastening. The retailer guide advises gloves and eye protection because insulation, especially fiberglass, can irritate skin and eyes.

If the existing door is a poor fit for a retrofit or its performance is inadequate for the space, compare it with a replacement door using the same whole-assembly and construction criteria. Have installation, warranty, and local availability included in that comparison.

Insulation, air leakage, and fire requirements are separate checks

Insulation limits heat transfer through the door assembly; it does not automatically correct air leakage at the edges or threshold. DASMA lists ANSI/DASMA 105-2017 for testing thermal transmittance and air infiltration of garage doors. A perimeter seal or bottom seal may help address a specific gap, but compatibility depends on the door profile and it is not a substitute for insulation.

DASMA also lists ANSI/DASMA 107-2012, a room fire-test standard for garage doors using foam-plastic insulation. These listings identify relevant standards, not the current code obligation for a particular project. Check the locally adopted building and fire codes and the door maker’s installation instructions; do not assume a product or retrofit meets code based on its insulation rating. Verify current standard editions and local applicability before specifying work.
