Designed by Sou Fujimoto Architects, it encircled the fairgrounds for about 2 km (1.2 miles), combining a ground-level visitor route with an elevated path called the Sky Walk.
How large was the Grand Ring?
New Atlas reported the ring at approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) in circumference and about 30 m (98 ft) wide. Its outer edge measured roughly 675 m (2,214 ft) in diameter. These are reported project dimensions, not measurements from a general study. New Atlas also reported that Guinness World Records certified it as the world’s largest wooden structure. New Atlas
The height figures describe different aspects of the structure. New Atlas put the Sky Walk about 12 m (40 ft) above ground, while Architectural Record described the structure’s height as ranging from 40 to 66 ft. Architectural Record
What was it designed to do?
The ring served as a major circulation route around the Expo grounds, helping visitors move between areas and orient themselves within the site. Its elevated Sky Walk offered views across the fair. An Expo 2025 statement reproduced by New Atlas said the structure was intended to provide shelter from wind, rain, and sunlight.

The same statement called the Grand Ring a symbol of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, expressing “Unity in Diversity.” That was the Expo’s stated concept, rather than a claim about a measured visitor or environmental outcome.
How was the timber structure built?
Sou Fujimoto Architects’ design combined contemporary construction methods with the traditional Japanese Nuki joint technique, used in buildings such as shrines and temples. New Atlas reported the use of cedar and cypress, along with some Scots pine. Architectural Record described interlocking joints reinforced with steel. The project should therefore not be described as wholly free of metal reinforcement or as having every connection made without mechanical reinforcement.

The construction approach brought traditional joinery into a large contemporary public structure. The available project descriptions do not establish a quantified carbon benefit or comparative lifecycle advantage, so timber use alone should not be treated as proof of either.

Expo 2025 closed on October 13, 2025. The cited reporting does not establish whether the ring was ultimately retained, dismantled, or repurposed. In April 2025, New Atlas reported that keeping the structure was under consideration and that ideas were being solicited; that was a proposal-stage discussion, not confirmation of a final decision.
