A drill/driver is the versatile choice for ordinary holes and occasional screw driving; an impact driver delivers rotational pulses to drive stubborn fasteners; and a hammer drill adds forward hammering to help bore into brick and masonry. The key difference is the direction and purpose of the added force—not simply how powerful the tool is.
How the three tools work
Drill/driver: continuous rotation
A standard drill/driver turns its bit continuously. It is the flexible starting point for drilling ordinary holes and driving screws around the home or jobsite. Select a bit and speed suited to the material and task.
Impact driver: rotational blows
An impact driver delivers short, powerful twisting pulses around the fastener axis. Those rotational impacts help drive long screws or other resistant fasteners, unlike a conventional drill’s continuous turning force. DEWALT explains the distinction in its impact driver and impact wrench guidance.
Hammer drill: forward blows while rotating
A hammer drill turns the bit while adding a rapid forward hammering action. The added motion helps when drilling materials such as brick and masonry, which resist ordinary rotary drilling, according to DEWALT’s hammer-drill guidance, updated 24 November 2025. Hammer-drill mode is not the same as a rotary hammer for heavy concrete work; check the specific tool’s rated capacity and instructions for demanding masonry jobs.

Which tool suits which job?
| Tool | What moves | Best fit | Practical caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drill/driver | The bit rotates continuously. | General holes and occasional screw driving. | Use a bit and speed suited to the material and task. |
| Impact driver | Rotational impacts pulse around the fastener axis. | Repeated or demanding screw and fastener driving. | Commonly uses 1/4-inch hex bits; choose impact-ready bits. A chuck adapter enables some drilling, but does not make it the best choice for every hole. |
| Hammer drill/driver | The bit rotates and receives forward hammering. | Brick or masonry drilling; ordinary drilling too, if the model offers those modes. | Confirm the model has hammer mode and is rated for the material and hole size. |
This is a practical comparison of the cited manufacturer guidance; individual models vary.
Can an impact driver replace a drill?
Sometimes, but not for every drilling task. DEWALT says an impact driver can be used with impact-ready bits, or with its DW0521 adapter to convert a 1/4-inch hex interface to a three-jaw 3/8-inch drill chuck. It also notes that an impact driver’s speed can be higher than a drill’s, depending on the model. Check the tool and accessory instructions before drilling, and use a drill/driver when you need a general-purpose drilling tool. See DEWALT’s impact-driver drilling guidance.

How to choose for your work
- Household repairs, furniture assembly, and ordinary holes: A drill/driver often covers the widest range of tasks.
- Many long screws or resistant fasteners: Consider an impact driver, paired with impact-ready bits.
- Holes in brick or masonry: Consider a hammer drill/driver with hammer mode and capacity suited to the job; use an appropriate masonry bit.
- Both frequent fastener driving and masonry-capable drilling: Compare a two-tool combo kit rather than expecting one tool to do every job equally well.
Before buying, compare the actual work you need to do, the chuck or drive interface and bit compatibility, speed control and tool size, battery platform, and which batteries and charger the package includes. Published torque, speed, and impact figures belong to specific models and conditions; do not treat a figure as representative of an entire tool category or compare brands without checking how the figures were measured.
Manufacturer product pages illustrate why package contents and specifications need to be checked model by model: Makita’s CX205RB combo kit and XT296SMR combo kit are distinct configurations, not category-wide benchmarks.
