The Chinese Windlass: How the Differential Lifting Mechanism Works

The Chinese windlass uses two unequal drums to lift a load slowly with mechanical advantage. Here’s how rope transfer works—and what its historical name does not prove.

A Chinese windlass is a differential lifting mechanism: two different-diameter drums turn on one shaft, winding rope onto one drum while letting it unwind from the other. The rope’s moving loop supports the load, so each full turn raises it by half the difference between the drums’ circumferences. The name is familiar in Western technical writing, but it does not establish that the mechanism originated in China.

How a Chinese windlass works

Imagine two cylinders fixed side by side on the same rotating shaft. A rope is arranged so that turning the shaft winds it onto one drum while paying it off the other. A movable pulley, or another attachment for the load, hangs from the loop of rope between the drums.

Because the drums have different diameters, they move unequal lengths of rope during a turn. The larger drum takes up more rope than the smaller drum releases. That difference shortens the two supporting sides of the loop, lifting the load.

Lift per turn

For one complete revolution, the ideal lift is half the difference between the drums’ circumferences:

Lift per turn = (larger drum circumference − smaller drum circumference) ÷ 2

The division by two matters: the load hangs from a loop supported on two sides, so the net rope-length difference is shared between those sides. John Scott Russell described this relationship in an 1851 account of the machine, and Gardner D. Hiscox gave the same rule in his 1901 mechanics reference: Russell’s 1851 account; Hiscox’s 1901 reference.

Why it provides mechanical advantage

The drums differ only slightly in how much rope they move per revolution. As a result, the load rises slowly while the shaft turns, rather than advancing by the full amount of rope wound onto a drum. That slow movement is the source of the mechanism’s ideal force advantage: the operator trades speed and distance for reduced effort.

A smaller difference between drum diameters means less lift per turn and, in the ideal geometry, greater mechanical advantage. A numerical advantage cannot be stated from the mechanism’s name alone; it depends on the drum diameters, the crank length, and the assumptions used. Friction and changes in the rope’s effective winding diameter also affect real performance. The historical descriptions establish the geometric relationship, not a tested load rating or safe working load.

How it differs from other lifting arrangements

The Chinese windlass should not be confused with a windlass in general. A simple windlass winds rope onto a drum to raise a load; the differential arrangement uses two coaxial drums of unequal diameter and transfers rope between them. A block and tackle gains advantage through multiple rope sections supporting the load. The later Weston differential pulley uses a related differential principle but a different rope-and-sheave arrangement.

These mechanisms cannot be ranked as universally better or worse without a particular load, geometry, and task. Their rope routing, lift per turn, operating effort, speed, and control differ.

What is known about the name and origin

“Chinese windlass” is a name used in Western technical writing for the differential arrangement, not conclusive evidence of where it was invented. Joseph Needham and Colin A. Ronan write that “The history of the related machine known as the ‘Chinese windlass’ is also obscure.” They report that they found no Chinese text supporting the Western name. They note a possible connection with Chinese windlasses using two ropes on one drum, where one load descends as another rises, but leave that derivation uncertain. See Needham and Ronan’s historical discussion.

Russell’s 1851 account reports the machine’s use for raising water and describes its application to deep wells. That is a historical author’s account, not evidence of how commonly the device is used today.

The later Weston differential pulley

A separate, better-documented development came in 1859. Tangye’s company history says Thomas Aldridge Weston’s improved pulley-block patent was based on his observation of the Chinese windlass. The Weston design replaced the broad drum arrangement with narrow sheaves, used chain instead of rope, and joined the chain’s ends. This is a related engineering development; it does not resolve the original mechanism’s geographic origin. Tangye’s company history.

A demonstration is not a rated lifting device

A construction project can make the rope transfer and slow lift easier to understand. Make: documents a demonstration using two steel-pipe barrels of different diameters: the Make: Chinese windlass project. It illustrates the principle, but it does not establish a safe working load or make a homemade assembly suitable for lifting people, materials, or other hazardous loads.

For real lifting work, use equipment with a stated rating and follow its manufacturer’s instructions and applicable site safety requirements. Do not infer capacity from drum dimensions or from a demonstration build.
