Chompshop recommends it for ages 3 and up, but its age guidance, materials advice and safety claims should be read as the manufacturer’s—not as a guarantee that the tool is suitable for every child or project.
How the ChompSaw cuts cardboard
Chompshop describes a cutter that oscillates inside a metal guard and removes small pieces of cardboard, which collect in a dust tray. The company likens the action to a precision hole punch running at high speed. MoMA Design Store also describes it as a high-speed hole punch. These are product descriptions, not independent performance tests.
The product is intended to make straight cuts, curves and slots. Its separate hole punch can start holes or cuts inside a sheet, while the scoring tool makes fold lines or compresses thicker cardboard. Those features can help turn flat cardboard into shapes for forts, costumes, dioramas and other 3D projects; Chompshop also suggests it for camps, workshops and maker spaces. The suggested uses are not evidence of independently measured educational outcomes.
Age guidance, safety claims and materials
What the age recommendation means
Chompshop recommends the ChompSaw for ages 3 and up. The company says it was independently tested against child-product standards for ages 3+ in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union and Australia, and says it met the applicable standards as of March 2025. Its FAQ names ASTM F963 and CPSIA for the United States; CCPSA toy-safety requirements for Canada; EN IEC 62115 and EN71, with CE and UKCA marks, for the UK and EU; and AS/NZS ISO 8124 for Australia. The underlying test report was not included with the reviewed product information, so these remain manufacturer-reported claims. MoMA Design Store separately warns of small parts and says the product is not for children under 3.

An age label does not decide whether a particular child can use a powered tool responsibly. Follow the current product instructions, supervise use according to the child’s abilities, and keep small parts away from younger children.
What it is designed to cut
Cardboard is the intended material and the material Chompshop says it focused on for usability and durability testing. The company says softer materials under 3 mm—such as felt, fabric and craft foam—may work, but does not guarantee their performance. It explicitly says not to cut metal. The product information does not establish other materials as approved or tested.

Noise, stability and cleanup
Sound and workspace
Chompshop reports operating noise of about 70–75 dB, roughly comparable to a household vacuum, and suggests ear protection for children sensitive to sound. The reported figure was not independently verified in the sources reviewed. The manufacturer lists approximate dimensions of 10 × 10 × 4 inches and a weight of 5.5 lb.
Chompshop notes that forward pressure on large pieces can make the saw slide. Its Chompin’ Station anchors it at a table edge; the FAQ also suggests double-sided tape or a non-slip mat. Set up the machine on a stable work surface and manage cardboard scraps and dust as you work; the cutter’s small waste pieces collect in a dust tray.

Chompshop describes a one-year warranty and a full refund within 30 days of receiving an order. Its FAQ says replacement cutting heads are available, and its collection page lists table accessories and an Inventor’s Workbook. Is it a fit for your cardboard projects?
The ChompSaw is most relevant when a child or maker expects to make repeated cardboard cuts, curves, slots or interior openings and values a guarded, powered cutting action. It is less compelling if the work is occasional, the workspace cannot be stabilized, or the project depends on materials other than cardboard.
