The biggest kitchen trends of 2023 combined two different ideas: technology was making cooking more connected and automated, while kitchen design was becoming more personal, organized and task-focused. AI-assisted ovens, app-controlled appliances, smart baking tools and multifunction countertop ovens attracted attention, but practical upgrades such as workstation sinks, improved pantries, bold appliance colors and better prep space were more broadly useful for a kitchen remodel.

This is a historical look at the products and design directions forecast in 2023. Several examples were CES announcements, premium launches or emerging concepts rather than proven mainstream purchases. Prices, availability, subscriptions and software features may have changed, so treat the product details below as 2023 context rather than current buying advice.

What defined the 2023 kitchen?

The kitchen was increasingly being treated as a connected home hub rather than a room containing separate appliances. Refrigerators displayed recipes and controlled smart-home devices. Ovens used cameras, sensors and software to guide cooking. Stand mixers measured ingredients and monitored mixing. Countertop ovens attempted to combine several cooking methods in one appliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At the same time, the most durable design trends were not necessarily the most digital. Homeowners and designers were looking for better pantry storage, more flexible sinks, expressive colors, tactile materials and layouts that made everyday preparation easier. For a construction or renovation project, that distinction matters: a reliable prep surface or well-planned storage system can improve every meal, while a connected feature may depend on an app, a subscription or a compatible appliance ecosystem.

1. Connected appliances and AI-assisted cooking

Samsung provided one of the clearest examples of the connected-kitchen direction at CES 2023. Its Bespoke 4-Door Flex refrigerator with Family Hub+ was presented with a 32-inch display intended for recipes, appliance monitoring, entertainment and smart-home control. Samsung also emphasized the Bespoke range of customizable formats, colors and finishes, making the refrigerator both a technology product and a visible design element in the room.

The company’s Bespoke AI Oven pushed the software concept further. Samsung said its camera and AI Pro Cooking system could recognize approximately 80 dishes and ingredients, recommend cooking settings, monitor food and provide burn notifications. Those are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not independent validation of recognition accuracy or cooking results. In practice, the potential benefit was reduced friction: the appliance could offer guidance and alerts instead of requiring the cook to check every stage manually.

LG’s CES 2023 cooking-appliance announcement showed that connected features were moving beyond refrigerators and full-size ovens. Its ThinQ-enabled over-the-range microwave lineup emphasized remote control and monitoring, status notifications, smart recipe services, steam cooking and simmer cooking. That suggests a broader shift toward coordinating smaller steps in a cooking workflow, rather than treating smart technology as something reserved for a refrigerator screen.

What this means for a kitchen renovation

  • Plan for connectivity: Connected appliances need reliable Wi-Fi and ongoing software support. A location with weak wireless coverage can make an expensive feature frustrating.
  • Plan the physical installation first: Cabinet openings, appliance depth, ventilation, power and clearances still matter more than the app experience.
  • Watch ecosystem compatibility: A refrigerator, oven and microwave may offer their best coordination when they belong to the same manufacturer’s platform, which can make future replacements less flexible.
  • Separate alerts from automation: A notification that food needs attention may be genuinely useful. A promise that software will make every recipe foolproof deserves more caution.

For builders and homeowners, the practical lesson was not that every kitchen needed an AI oven. It was that appliance planning increasingly involved software, accounts, updates and compatibility alongside plumbing, electrical and cabinet decisions.

2. Smart baking brought measurement into the mixer

The GE Profile Smart Mixer with Auto Sense was one of the most specific examples of smart technology being applied to a familiar appliance. GE’s product materials described a built-in smart scale, Auto Sense technology that monitors changes in texture and viscosity through motor-torque feedback, voice control through Alexa or Google Home, and software updates that can provide guided recipes. GE also announced the mixer as a CES 2023 Innovation Awards honoree.

The built-in scale addressed a real baking problem: accurate ingredient measurement without using a separate device. Auto Sense was presented by GE as a way to help reduce overmixing and undermixing in supported recipes by detecting changes in the mixture. That does not mean it guarantees better results for every dough, batter or baker. The feature’s usefulness depends on the recipe support, the user’s habits and how much guidance the cook actually wants.

Independent coverage from Tom’s Guide added an important qualification. Its testing described the digital scale, app, voice control and Auto Sense features, but also questioned whether the smart functions would be valuable to most users at the product’s price. That is the central trade-off: the mixer was technically distinctive, but a buyer who already owns a reliable stand mixer and kitchen scale may see convenience rather than a transformational improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a frequent baker, the combination of weighing, guided instructions and hands-free controls could justify allocating more counter space and budget. For an occasional baker, a conventional mixer paired with a separate digital scale may deliver the core benefit at lower cost and with fewer software dependencies.

Buying note: Retail availability and pricing for the GE Profile Smart Mixer with Auto Sense are volatile. Verify the current model, warranty, retailer and return policy before purchasing; the product details discussed here describe its 2023 launch context.

3. Countertop ovens became multifunction cooking centers

Countertop ovens were competing to do much more than toast bread. The premium Brava Glass smart oven added a transparent glass door to Brava’s light-based cooking platform. The 2023 source coverage described functions including air frying, roasting, baking, broiling, toasting, reheating, slow cooking and warming. Brava’s product information also described three independently controlled cooking zones and a wireless temperature sensor.

Lifewit Utensil Organizer for Kitchen Drawers, Expandable Utensil Tray | Adjustable Cooking Cutlery Silverware Flatware Holder, Plastic Spatula Tools Storage Divider, 13-22 x 15", Black
  • Maximum Organization: Featuring 3 large compartments (13.4"L × 3.5"D) and 2 expandable slots on the side (14"L × 4.7"D), this utensil organizer offers ample space for storing most cooking utensils in the kitchen, such as spatulas, ladles, tongs, utensil sets, and whisks. Please check drawer dimensions before purchase
  • Expandable and Adjustable: The utensil organizer for kitchen drawers can be expanded from 3 slots to 5 slots, offering extra storage space for utensils. It is adjustable to fit different drawer sizes, ranging from 13 to 22.4 inches wide. When folded, it measures 13" x 15" x 2", but expands to 22.4" x 15" x 2" for added space
  • Safe to Use: Crafted from BPA-free PP material, this cutlery drawer organizer guarantees the safety of all your utensils, silverware, and flatware. Cleaning is a breeze as well - simply rinse with water to remove stains
  • User-Friendly Design: With its solid bottom panel, attached dividers, and sturdy support frame, this cooking utensil organizer ensures that your utensils do not slide under the dividers. The curved grooves ensure convenient access to utensils, while the unique edge design allows for effortless movement
  • Efficient and Versatile Storage: This 5 compartment flatware organizer for drawer categorizes and neatly stores utensils, making it easy to pick up what you need. Not only for kitchen utensils, it can also be used in drawers in other rooms to store various small items

Those features illustrate the appeal of the category: one countertop appliance could combine several cooking modes with guided recipes, sensors and app-based control. Independent cooking zones could also make it possible to prepare different foods at different settings, while a wireless sensor could provide more direct information about food temperature.

But the historical price was approximately $2,000, placing Brava Glass firmly in the premium category. It was not a universal replacement for a conventional oven, and the source material did not establish that every advertised mode or sensor feature would outperform a purpose-built appliance. For many renovation projects, the more important question is whether a countertop unit solves a real space or workflow problem. If the kitchen already has a capable wall oven and a suitable ventilation plan, the additional appliance may consume valuable counter space without adding enough practical value.

When a multifunction countertop oven makes sense

  • A small kitchen needs several cooking modes without a full-size second oven.
  • The household regularly uses air frying, reheating, baking or roasting and wants to consolidate appliances.
  • The cook values guided programs and temperature monitoring enough to accept a higher purchase price.
  • The remodel includes a dedicated, accessible countertop location with adequate power and clearance.

For a new build or major remodel, countertop appliances should be considered during layout planning rather than added after the cabinets are installed. A dedicated appliance garage or open shelf can keep the unit accessible, but the design should not assume that every large smart oven will fit standard cabinet dimensions.

4. Smart cutting boards moved instructions to the prep surface

CES 2023 also produced early experiments in smart cutting boards. The Blok was described as a premium walnut cutting board with a detachable screen for cooking videos. Its reported 2023 pricing was approximately $799 upfront plus a $39 monthly subscription. Versaware’s Smart Cutting Board used a smaller integrated screen to provide recipe instructions, technique information, calorie information and nutrition guidance.

The underlying idea was simple: put instructional content directly where food preparation happens. A screen at the cutting board could make it easier to follow a recipe without repeatedly touching a phone or looking across the room. It could also turn a basic prep station into a guided workstation for inexperienced cooks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These products should be understood as CES-era category experiments, not established kitchen essentials. The available source material did not demonstrate broad availability or independent testing. Their price and, in Blok’s case, subscription requirement also raised a basic value question: would a homeowner use the dedicated system often enough to justify its cost, or would a tablet, phone stand or printed recipe provide nearly the same benefit?

There is also a design issue for builders. A prep-surface screen needs to coexist with water, food debris, knives and cleaning routines. A connected cutting board may be visually impressive, but a conventional, durable cutting surface remains easier to replace and easier to integrate into a long-term kitchen plan.

5. Food freshness technology tested the limits of the smart kitchen

The Kaltech Fresh Food Keeper was presented as an electrically powered breadbox or food-preservation device using photocatalysis. Its reported price was approximately $315. The intended appeal was to help preserve bread and other food in a dedicated environment rather than relying only on a conventional breadbox or refrigerator.

This product requires especially careful wording. The source article explicitly stated that it had not tested the Fresh Food Keeper and that meaningful evaluation would require several days. There is therefore no basis here to claim that it prevents mold, extends freshness by a specific amount or saves money on groceries. The product’s intended use and claimed mechanism can be described, but performance should be treated as unverified in this research.

  • Thoughtful Design: Unique groove design for easy access to cutlery. Lifewit utensil holders bring seamless order to your kitchen!

More broadly, freshness technology shows how the connected-kitchen category expanded into food management. The potential benefit is less waste through better storage and awareness. The unresolved question is whether the device creates a measurable improvement over good storage practices, appropriate refrigeration and buying only what the household will use.

6. Appliances became part of the kitchen’s visual identity

Smart technology was only half of the 2023 kitchen story. Appliances were also becoming more visually expressive. Samsung’s Bespoke announcements emphasized customizable refrigerator configurations, colors and finishes. Food Network’s 2023 Kitchen Report described hyper-customized appliances from brands including BlueStar, Samsung and Big Chill, including coordinated colors and printed refrigerator designs.

This reflected a larger design movement away from the assumption that every appliance should be white, black or stainless steel. A refrigerator could act as an accent, coordinate with cabinetry or contribute to a deliberately distinctive palette. However, customization options were not necessarily available for every model or in every market. A design should be finalized against the exact product specification rather than a showroom image or a broad brand promise.

Other visual trends reported for 2023

Food Network’s report identified several complementary details:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Upgraded pantries: Wallpaper, stronger finishes and more deliberate organization turned pantry storage into a designed room or feature rather than an afterthought.
  • Fluted islands: Ribbed or fluted surfaces added texture to island bases and helped break up large uninterrupted cabinet faces.
  • Cork accessories: Cork introduced a softer, tactile material for accessories and accents.
  • Textured cabinet knobs: Hardware with more pronounced texture added visual and tactile interest.
  • Wood hoods: A wood range hood could make ventilation equipment feel integrated with the cabinetry and architectural character of the room.
  • Checkerboard backsplashes: High-contrast tile patterns created a stronger focal point than a uniformly neutral backsplash.
  • Oversized basket lights: Large woven or basket-style pendants brought scale and texture above islands or dining areas.
  • Bold appliance colors: Colored appliances provided an alternative to matching every surface in a single neutral finish.

Some of these changes are easier to update than others. Lighting, hardware and accessories can often be changed without rebuilding the kitchen. Cabinet fronts, hoods, backsplashes and appliance finishes require more commitment, so they should be evaluated as part of the room’s overall proportions and material palette.

7. Workstation sinks made the sink area more flexible

Among the more practical 2023 design directions was the workstation sink. Food Network described these fixtures as multifunctional sinks with interchangeable accessories such as cutting boards, colanders and drying racks. Instead of treating the sink as a single basin surrounded by unused counter space, the workstation approach turns it into a flexible prep and cleanup area.

That can be valuable in kitchens where counter space is limited or where several people prepare food at once. A cutting board that spans the sink can create temporary prep space. A colander that rests inside the basin can make rinsing and draining more convenient. A drying rack can keep wet dishes contained rather than occupying the counter.

Workstation sinks also need careful construction planning. The sink, faucet, accessories and surrounding countertop must be selected as a coordinated system. The cabinet below must accommodate the basin, plumbing and any waste-disposal equipment. The sink’s dimensions and the counter material need to be confirmed before fabrication, because changing the opening later is far more difficult than changing a countertop accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a practical upgrade, workstation sink accessories may provide more everyday value than a novelty screen. They are still dependent on the exact sink dimensions and accessory system, so measure the existing or planned sink before buying.

8. Sustainability and efficiency supported the trend, but did not prove it

Sustainability, connectivity and wellness were identified by Euromonitor’s CES 2023 analysis as major areas of appliance-industry investment. Samsung also framed its connected-kitchen lineup around convenience, personalization and more sustainable kitchen use.

Smart features can potentially support efficiency. Inventory awareness may help a household use food before it spoils. Programmable operation and remote monitoring may reduce unnecessary cooking time or make it easier to avoid leaving an appliance running. Sensors may provide more precise information than guesswork.

Potential is not the same as measured household savings. A connected appliance may consume additional electricity for displays or networking, and a feature that is rarely used cannot justify a higher purchase price on efficiency grounds alone. The most defensible construction advice is to prioritize efficient equipment, appropriate sizing, durable materials and good layout first. Treat app-based efficiency claims as a bonus that should be verified for the specific model.

9. The reality check: announcements are not the same as adoption

The 2023 kitchen forecast included impressive demonstrations, but several limitations were already visible:

  1. High prices: A roughly $2,000 countertop oven, an approximately $799 cutting board with a monthly subscription, and a premium smart mixer all limited the audience.
  2. Limited or uncertain availability: Some products were CES debuts or new announcements. A product shown at a trade show was not automatically available in every country or through ordinary retail channels.
  3. Subscription exposure: A recurring fee can change the long-term cost of a gadget and may affect whether its software remains useful after several years.
  4. Ecosystem lock-in: Smart appliances often work best when connected to a manufacturer’s broader platform. That convenience can make it harder to mix brands or replace one appliance independently.
  5. Software dependence: Recipes, alerts, recognition features and remote controls may depend on apps, accounts, internet access and future software support.
  6. Unproven claims: Manufacturer descriptions explain intended functions, but they do not replace independent testing. This is particularly important for AI accuracy, food-preservation performance and claims about optimization.

For a construction project, these risks have a physical consequence. Cabinets, outlets, plumbing and ventilation can last for decades, while an app or connected service may change much sooner. Install the room so it works well even if the smart feature is discontinued.

10. How to choose useful upgrades for a remodel

A sensible 2023-inspired kitchen does not need every gadget. Use the following order of priorities:

Start with the workflow

Identify where the household loses time or counter space. Is the problem measuring ingredients, preparing food, storing pantry items, washing produce, or monitoring food while doing another task? Choose technology only when it addresses a specific problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prioritize permanent improvements

Good lighting, accessible storage, durable counters, adequate outlets, suitable ventilation and a well-planned sink area continue to work without an app. These are usually safer investments for a long-term renovation than a device whose key features depend on a subscription.

Check the complete installation

Before ordering a smart appliance, confirm its dimensions, door swing, power requirements, ventilation needs, water connection, network requirements and control method. Also check whether the product can be operated manually if the internet or manufacturer service is unavailable.

Calculate ownership cost

Include the appliance, installation, accessories, subscription fees, replacement parts and likely software requirements. A lower-priced conventional appliance may be the better value if it performs the core task reliably for many years.

Keep replacement flexibility

A kitchen should not become unusable if one connected appliance is replaced with a different brand. Avoid designing the entire room around a single screen or proprietary accessory system unless the household accepts that trade-off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the technology to the user

A serious baker may appreciate a mixer with a built-in scale and guided recipes. A busy household may value remote oven status notifications. Someone who rarely uses recipe apps may prefer a simpler appliance and better storage. The right trend is the one that fits the way the kitchen is actually used.

The bottom line for homeowners and builders

The most important kitchen trend of 2023 was not one particular AI appliance. It was the convergence of personalization, connected services, multifunction cooking and more deliberate task planning. Samsung and LG demonstrated how appliances could communicate and provide guidance. GE applied measurement and sensor feedback to baking. Brava combined cooking modes in a premium countertop format. Smart cutting boards and food-preservation devices explored more specialized ideas.

For most remodels, the strongest long-term choices are likely to be the practical ones: a well-organized pantry, a flexible workstation sink, useful lighting, durable surfaces, sufficient power and an appliance layout that fits the household. Add connected technology when it solves a real problem, but design the kitchen so its fundamental functions do not depend on a screen, subscription or manufacturer ecosystem.

Did Samsung’s AI Oven independently prove that it could recognize 80 dishes or ingredients?

The approximately 80-dish-and-ingredient figure and related recognition, recommendation and burn-notification features were manufacturer-stated capabilities. They should not be treated as independently validated performance results.

Was the Brava Glass a replacement for a conventional oven?

It was positioned as a premium multifunction countertop oven, not a universally suitable replacement for a full-size oven. Its reported 2023 price of about $2,000 and countertop footprint made it a specialized option.

What is the most practical kitchen trend from this list?

For many remodels, workstation sinks, better pantry organization, improved lighting and a well-planned prep layout are more broadly useful than experimental smart gadgets. Technology is most worthwhile when it solves a specific household workflow problem.

The Bottom Line

In short: 2023’s kitchen forecast was a mix of genuinely useful workflow improvements and expensive early technology. Build the room around storage, prep space, durability and flexible infrastructure first; then add AI, sensors or app control where the benefit is clear and the kitchen will still work without them.
