Its reported 4,000 feet refers to the proposed structure’s length along its inverted-U path, not its vertical height. The “world’s longest building” label depends on that unusual end-to-end measurement.
What is the Big Bend?
Oiio Studio presented the Big Bend in March 2017 as a glass-lined tower for Midtown Manhattan. The design bent upward in two legs and joined above Calvary Baptist Church, in the 57th Street area commonly associated with Billionaires’ Row. These details describe the proposal; they do not establish that the site was acquired or the design approved. amNewYork reported the proposed location and church context, while CBS New York covered the studio’s 2017 unveiling.
Does 4,000 feet mean it would be 4,000 feet tall?
No. The 4,000-foot figure reported for the concept is its proposed length measured along the U-shaped form from end to end. It is not a claimed vertical height. Architectural Digest described the design-length figure; it should not be read as a height ranking.
That distinction matters because skyscraper height rankings use vertical measurements. The Council on Vertical Urbanism’s Skyscraper Center defines architectural height as a vertical measure from the lowest significant open-air pedestrian entrance to the architectural top, and records “to tip” as a separate vertical measure. Its One Madison Park entry illustrates those height categories.

Could it be the world’s longest building?
Only under the proposal’s end-to-end path-length framing. “Longest” here describes the length of an unusually shaped design, whereas standard skyscraper comparisons rank vertical height. The phrase therefore does not mean the Big Bend would be the world’s tallest building. Its 4,000-foot figure is a reported design dimension, not a verified measurement of a built structure.
Was the Big Bend built or approved?
The 2017 coverage documents a design proposal, not a completed skyscraper. A 2021 fact-check identified a viral image of the giant U-shaped tower as a 2017 proposed design rather than a real completed building. Lead Stories’ fact-check addresses that claim.

The sources cited here do not establish whether the concept advanced after its 2017 unveiling: they do not verify later financing, permits, approvals, construction, cancellation, or a new developer. In its March 2017 report, amNewYork said Calvary Baptist Church and the Department of City Planning had not offered official comment at that time; that dated account does not establish their current positions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How was the concept supposed to work?
The proposal included an elevator described as traveling through curved and horizontal sections in a continuous loop, linking shafts at the top and bottom. This was a feature of the design concept, not evidence that such an elevator was built, tested, or certified. CBS New York’s 2017 report also quoted Oiio’s description of the design as a way to address Manhattan height limits. That was the studio’s promotional framing, not an independent legal determination that the proposal complied with zoning.
