BISSELL Little Green

The Best Upholstery Cleaners We’ve Ever Tested

The BISSELL Little Green is the strongest overall choice for deep-cleaning upholstery, while Woolite INSTAclean is better for quick spots. Here is how the tested picks, alternatives, fabric rules, and machine-versus-spray trade-offs compare.

The BISSELL Little Green Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner is the best overall choice for deep-cleaning upholstery, while Woolite INSTAclean is the better option for quick spot treatment. The right purchase depends mainly on whether you need extraction for a larger or embedded mess, or a spray for a small stain. Before using either, check the furniture’s care instructions and test an inconspicuous area.

For deep cleaning couches, cushions, car seats, and other soft surfaces, the BISSELL Little Green Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner is the strongest overall choice in the current tested-product landscape. It is an extraction machine rather than a simple spray: it applies cleaning solution, agitates the fabric, and pulls dirty liquid back out. That makes it better suited to embedded soil, repeated spills, pet messes, and larger areas.

For a single fresh mark or a small odor problem, however, a spray is usually the more sensible purchase. Good Housekeeping’s tested guide names Woolite INSTAclean Permanent Stain and Odor Remover the best spray, Sunbrella Stain Remover the best choice for outdoor furniture, and Method Stain and Odor Treatment Spray the best plant-based option. Consumer Reports has also tested Folex, Resolve, Woolite, and a do-it-yourself formula against food stains. Those results are useful alternatives, but they come from a different test method and should not be treated as one combined ranking.

Quick picks

Best for Pick Why it makes sense
Deep cleaning and larger jobs BISSELL Little Green Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner A portable spray-and-extraction machine for upholstery, carpets, and other soft surfaces in the home or car.
Fast spot treatment Woolite INSTAclean Permanent Stain and Odor Remover A spray-format option for small stains and odor treatment.
Outdoor furniture Sunbrella Stain Remover Designed as a specialty option for compatible outdoor fabrics.
Plant-based positioning Method Stain and Odor Treatment Spray The tested plant-based pick; verify the current formulation and availability before buying.
Additional tested sprays Folex and Resolve Both were included in Consumer Reports’ independent spray-cleaner comparison.

Best overall: BISSELL Little Green Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner

The Little Green is the right starting point when “clean” means more than disguising a visible mark. Portable extractors are designed to put cleaning solution into the fabric and remove loosened soil and liquid. That deeper process is why they are generally a better fit for a whole sofa cushion, a heavily used chair, a dining-seat set, or recurring pet accidents than a bottle of spot cleaner.

Good Housekeeping names the BISSELL Little Green its best overall upholstery-cleaning machine after evaluating factors including stain removal, fabric safety, instructions, warnings, appliance performance, attachments, runtime, tank capacity, maintenance, and storage. Its testers also incorporated feedback from staff and consumers cleaning couches and cushions at home. That is an editorial test result—not a claim of personal hands-on testing for this article.

The current BISSELL catalog contains multiple products in the Little Green family, including standard, Mini, Pet, Max Pet, HydroSteam, cordless, and other variants. They are not interchangeable in every specification or included-accessory package. Before ordering, confirm that the listing is the exact BISSELL Little Green Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner corresponding to the editorial pick, rather than assuming every product with “Little Green” in its name is the same machine.

What it is best at

  • Deep-cleaning fabric that has accumulated soil over time.
  • Cleaning larger areas more efficiently than repeated hand blotting.
  • Refreshing upholstery, rugs, carpeted areas, car seats, and similar soft surfaces when the care instructions permit wet cleaning.
  • Handling recurring messes where having an extractor available is more practical than buying a new spray for every incident.

What to expect

Extraction is slower and more involved than spraying and wiping. You must fill the clean-water or solution tank, use the correct formula, make controlled passes, empty and rinse the dirty-water tank, and allow the fabric to dry. Upholstery can remain damp after cleaning, so ventilation matters. Do not judge the machine solely by how quickly a surface looks better while wet.

Best spray for quick spot treatment: Woolite INSTAclean

Woolite INSTAclean Permanent Stain and Odor Remover is the better format when the problem is limited to a small area: a fresh food drip, a localized mark on a cushion, or an odor that does not justify setting up a machine. A spray avoids the storage, filling, extraction, and drying work associated with a portable cleaner.

That convenience comes with a limit. A spray is not a substitute for extracting an entire heavily soiled sofa, and the word “permanent” on a product name does not mean every stain will disappear from every fabric. Follow the label, use only on labeled materials, and blot rather than aggressively scrubbing the stain farther into the weave.

Shark StainStriker Portable Carpet/Upholstery Cleaner, 4 Tools, PX202BRN
  • UNDO TOUGH SPOTS AND STAINS THROUGHOUT YOUR HOME: Shark StainStriker is a portable carpet and upholstery cleaner that delivers powerful tough stain elimination. It’s loaded with a lineup of tools that give you maximum cleaning performance on carpets, rugs, stairs, cars, and more.

  • FOUR SPECIALIZED TOOLS FOR EVERY MESS: Includes four specially designed tools to easily clean tough spots and stains on carpets, area rugs, upholstery, carpeted stairs, and more.
  • REMOVES ODORS INSTEAD OF JUST MASKING THEM: Stubborn, lingering odors like smoke and pet urine aren’t just covered up, they’re trapped and removed.^
  • PULLS OUT EMBEDDED MESSES: Ultra-powerful suction digs deep into carpet fibers, giving you a thorough clean across your whole home.

Best for outdoor furniture: Sunbrella Stain Remover

Sunbrella Stain Remover is the specialty pick for compatible outdoor furniture fabrics. Outdoor cushions may be exposed to food, drink, soil, sunscreen, and weather-related grime, but “outdoor fabric” is not a universal material category. Check the cushion’s care instructions and the current product label before use, particularly if the cover has a coating, backing, printed pattern, or a manufacturer-specific cleaning requirement.

Do not assume that a product intended for Sunbrella fabric is automatically suitable for every patio cushion, acrylic textile, performance fabric, or waterproof-treated surface. Test an inconspicuous area first and allow it to dry before assessing color or texture changes.

Best plant-based option: Method Stain and Odor Treatment Spray

Method Stain and Odor Treatment Spray is the tested plant-based choice in Good Housekeeping’s current guide. It may appeal to shoppers who want a plant-based formulation, but that description should not be confused with a blanket guarantee that a product is harmless to every fabric, person, pet, or ecosystem. Read the current ingredient information, warnings, directions, and material restrictions.

“Plant-based,” “natural,” and “eco-friendly” are not interchangeable with independently verified safety or environmental performance. If ingredient and environmental screening is a priority, use the EPA’s current Safer Choice directory as a product-specific check. EPA says the voluntary program evaluates ingredients and requires performance standards; certification applies to listed products, not automatically to an entire brand or product family.

Tested alternatives: Folex and Resolve

Consumer Reports independently compared several spray cleaners, including Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover, Resolve Upholstery and Multi-Fabric Spot & Stain Remover, Woolite Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner, and a DIY formula. Its testing included food stains such as chipotle in adobo and curry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This evidence supports considering Folex carpet and upholstery spot remover and Resolve upholstery cleaner as tested alternatives for spot treatment. It does not establish that either is better or worse than the Good Housekeeping picks, because the organizations used different test designs, scoring approaches, products, and stains. Treat the two comparisons as useful but separate pieces of evidence.

Machine or spray: the decision that matters most

If your situation is… Choose… Reason
One small, fresh spill Spray Fast setup and limited wetting.
A whole sofa, several cushions, or a frequently used chair Portable extractor More appropriate for deeper cleaning and larger areas.
A recurring pet-accident problem Extractor plus a compatible labeled formula Extraction can remove more liquid and soil; odor treatment still depends on the formula and stain.
Outdoor cushions Fabric-specific spray or cleaner Compatibility with the outdoor textile matters more than a generic “upholstery” label.
Very delicate or specialty upholstery Professional advice or the manufacturer’s recommended method Wet extraction and household sprays are not universally safe for all materials.

Match the cleaner to the stain—but let the label decide

Formulation can provide a useful starting point:

  • Pet accidents and odors: An enzyme-based formula may be useful because enzymes are commonly used to target organic residues. Use that description only when the specific label supports it, and follow any required dwell time.
  • Food and drink stains: Oxygen-based formulas may suit many such stains, but colorfastness and fabric compatibility still need testing.
  • Grease: A product specifically labeled for oily or greasy soils may be more appropriate than a general fabric spray.
  • Red wine and strongly colored spills: A specialty formula may be worth considering, but age, heat, fabric dye, and previous cleaning attempts can affect the result.

These are formulation guidelines, not guarantees. Never substitute a homemade mixture or a carpet product for an upholstery-approved cleaner without checking the material and label directions.

How to clean upholstery more safely

  1. Find the manufacturer’s care code. Check the furniture tag or care documentation before applying water or any chemical. A code or instruction permitting water-based cleaning is materially different from a recommendation for solvent-only cleaning or professional cleaning.
  2. Vacuum loose soil first. Removing grit reduces the chance of turning dry dirt into muddy residue during wet cleaning.
  3. Read both labels. Check the cleaner’s approved surfaces, dilution instructions, dwell time, warnings, ventilation guidance, and whether it can be used in your machine. Also read the machine manual.
  4. Patch-test. Apply the product to a hidden area and let it dry completely. Look for dye transfer, rings, discoloration, stiffness, pile changes, or a lingering residue.
  5. Use the minimum necessary moisture. Overwetting can lengthen drying, create water marks, or contribute to odor and other fabric problems.
  6. Blot or extract—do not grind. Work from the outside of a spot toward the center when using a spray. With a machine, make slow, controlled passes and avoid flooding the cushion.
  7. Rinse when the instructions require it. Residual cleaner can attract soil or leave the fabric feeling stiff. Use only the rinse method and water amount permitted by the label and upholstery instructions.
  8. Dry thoroughly. Separate cushions if appropriate, improve airflow, and keep the furniture out of use until it is dry. Do not seal damp cushions in place.
  9. Maintain the machine. Empty and rinse tanks, clean the recovery path and tools as directed, and store the unit dry. Maintenance affects odor, performance, and readiness for the next spill.

Materials that require extra caution

No general upholstery cleaner should be assumed safe for leather, suede, velvet, silk, antique textiles, heavily dyed fabrics, or specialty performance materials. Some of these surfaces can react badly to water, agitation, solvents, or surfactants even when the product is marketed for “multi-fabric” use. For valuable or irreplaceable furniture, follow the manufacturer’s instructions or use a qualified upholstery-cleaning professional.

How these picks were evaluated

The central machine and spray recommendations reflect Good Housekeeping’s July 15, 2026 tested-product guide. Its evaluation considers cleaning performance, fabric safety, ease of use, rinsing, instructions, warnings, appliance performance, attachments, runtime, capacity, maintenance, and storage, with additional feedback from people cleaning couches and cushions at home.

  • AMERICA'S #1 BRAND IN PORTABLE DEEP CLEANING: Trusted by over 7 million households.
  • TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF MESS: Scientifically proven to lift and remove 100+ common messes and stains.
  • ULTRA-POWERFUL TRIPLE ACTION FORMULA: Permanently removes stains and powerfully eliminates odors for “like new” results.
  • LARGE 48OZ. CLEAN WATER TANK: Clean more, uninterrupted, with large capacity clean water tank.
  • EASY STAIN REMOVAL: Just spray, scrub & suction.

Folex, Resolve, Woolite Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner, and a DIY formula come from Consumer Reports’ separate spray-cleaner comparison, which used food stains including chipotle in adobo and curry. The sources establish reported editorial testing; they do not establish personal testing for this article, universal stain-removal rates, noise measurements, drying-time measurements, long-term durability, warranty outcomes, or current prices.

Bottom line

Buy the BISSELL Little Green Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner if you need deeper cleaning or expect to tackle more than occasional small spots. Choose Woolite INSTAclean when speed and convenience matter more than whole-furniture extraction. Choose Sunbrella Stain Remover for compatible outdoor fabric, and consider Method if a plant-based option is your priority. Folex and Resolve remain reasonable tested alternatives for spot treatment, but whichever product you choose, fabric-care instructions and a hidden-area test matter more than a broad marketing claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy an upholstery-cleaning machine or a spray?

A portable extractor is usually the better choice for embedded soil, several cushions, recurring pet messes, or a whole sofa. A spray is faster and more practical for one small, fresh spot. Extraction also leaves fabric damp and requires more cleanup and drying time.

Can I use these cleaners on any upholstery?

No. Check the furniture manufacturer’s care code and the product label first, then test an inconspicuous area. Upholstery cleaners are not automatically suitable for leather, velvet, silk, suede, antique textiles, or every performance fabric.

Which BISSELL Little Green model should I buy?

The current editorial pick is the BISSELL Little Green Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner. Confirm the exact model because the Little Green family also includes Mini, Pet, Max Pet, HydroSteam, cordless, and other variants.

Does plant-based mean an upholstery cleaner is environmentally safe?

An EPA Safer Choice listing can be a useful product-specific filter because EPA reviews ingredients and performance requirements. Do not assume that a whole brand or product family is certified; verify the exact product in the current directory.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: BISSELL Little Green for deeper cleaning and larger upholstery jobs. Best quick fix: Woolite INSTAclean for small spots. Always verify the furniture care code, current label, exact machine model, and formula compatibility before cleaning.
