For most people who practice Pilates at home, the best dedicated mat is the AIREX Pilates 190. It is 8 mm thick, firmer than many extra-soft exercise mats, and designed to balance cushioning with traction during lying, kneeling, standing, and transitional movements.
That recommendation comes from Verywell Fit’s reported testing, which covered more than 4,200 minutes of at-home use and included Pilates movements and stretches performed standing, lying, and kneeling. The testing and 4.8/5 rating belong to the cited Verywell Fit guide—not to this publication or the current writer.

A thin yoga mat can work for some Pilates routines, but Pilates mat work places different demands on the surface. Exercises may move from lying on the back to kneeling, sitting, standing, or transitioning between positions. The Hundred, roll-ups, bridges, side-lying movements, planks, and similar exercises can put repeated pressure on the spine, hips, knees, wrists, and elbows.
That makes cushioning important, but maximum softness is not the goal. A mat that compresses too easily can make balance work feel unstable and reduce the clear floor feedback that helps with controlled movement. Pilates emphasizes breath, alignment, control, flow, and movement quality; a useful mat should support those priorities rather than wobble underneath them.
#1 Best Overall
- Extra thick, cushy floor mat in Black for yoga, gym, and everyday exercise
- 1/2 inch thickness offers comfortable padded support and shock absorption; textured surface provides extra traction
- Durable foam construction offers stretchability and springs back into shape
- Elastic strap for secure rolled-up mat storage and easy over-the-shoulder carrying
- Wipes clean easily
The American Council on Exercise’s Pilates education materials recommend using a mat or another cushioned surface for comfort during movements such as the Pilates Hundred. That is a practical explanation for choosing a purpose-built Pilates mat rather than automatically using the thinnest travel yoga mat available.
How the reported testing should be interpreted
The headline figure—more than 4,200 minutes—comes from the testing methodology reported by Verywell Fit. The guide evaluated mats during at-home use, including standing, lying, and kneeling movements and stretches. Its ratings considered grip, comfort, portability, durability, and value.
In that reported testing, the AIREX Pilates 190 received the overall recommendation and a 4.8/5 rating. The guide reported that it remained comfortable during slower and faster sequences on carpet, hardwood, and tile. Those are reported editorial test results; they have not been independently reproduced by this article’s publisher.
Best dedicated Pilates mat: AIREX Pilates 190
The AIREX Pilates 190 is the strongest choice for someone who primarily wants a mat for Pilates rather than one universal surface for every type of workout.
AIREX lists it at 8 mm thick and describes it as the thinnest mat in its range while still providing softness and support. Its firmer construction is intended to reduce stretch and improve slip resistance compared with the brand’s other mats. That combination is useful for Pilates: there is enough padding for floor-based work, but the surface is not designed to feel like a deep, unstable cushion.
- Size: 190 cm long—about 75 inches—with a standard-width footprint of approximately 23 inches.
- Feel: Supportive and relatively firm for an 8 mm mat.
- Handling: Rolls and unrolls easily and is designed to lie flat immediately.
- Surface protection: Includes integrated Sanitized antimicrobial protection. This should not be interpreted as sterilization or as a guarantee against infection.
- Cleaning: AIREX recommends ordinary soapy water followed by air-drying.
- Footwear: The manufacturer recommends barefoot use or socks.
The main trade-offs are price and width. It is not the cheapest way to put padding under a beginner’s home routine, and its approximately 23-inch width is standard rather than especially spacious. Taller users or people who frequently move laterally may want to compare the full dimensions before ordering.

The Balanced Body EcoWise Pilates Mat is a good alternative for people who want a dedicated Pilates surface with a pronounced textured grip and clearly specified material exclusions.
Rank #2
- EXTRA THICK FOR COMFORT AND BALANCE: Solana firm 1⁄2-inch extra thick fitness mat w/ mat strap alleviates stress on pressure points such as joints, hips, hands, and knees. 72" x 24" x 1⁄2"
- NON-SLIP SURFACE: Solana's non-slip material keeps you steady and balanced while staying securely on the floor, preventing injury and allowing you to focus on your practice or workout.
- DURABILITY: Solana's thick, durable material allows for everyday use, regardless of the intensity of your exercise. Ideal for your home or studio practice.
- BPA FREE: Our products are free of Phthalate, heavy metals and latex. Your mat may initially release a harmless odor. If so, unroll your mat and air it for a day or two before using.
- EASY TO CLEAN: Solana is easy to keep clean and fresh for your next workout. Use a mix of gentle soap and water, wipe clean, and hang it to dry. Do not submerge.
Balanced Body describes the mat as approximately 1 cm thick—roughly 3/8 inch—and 72 by 23 inches. Its proprietary textured surface is intended to provide traction, while the closed-cell construction is relatively easy to wipe clean. The company specifies that this model is made without latex, PVC, or chloride, which may matter to buyers who are trying to avoid particular materials. Anyone with a sensitivity or allergy should still confirm the current manufacturer information and consult an appropriate professional rather than relying on a general product description.
The EcoWise is thinner than a very plush 5/8- or 1-inch mat, so it should provide a more direct floor feel. That can be an advantage during controlled movements and transitions, but users who are especially uncomfortable on hard floors may prefer the thicker Aeromat.
Best for extra cushioning: Balanced Body Aeromat
The Balanced Body Aeromat is the better direction for users who prioritize pressure relief and comfort over a low-profile feel. Balanced Body lists it at 5/8 inch thick and 72 by 23 inches, using closed-cell foam to provide additional cushion.
That extra thickness can be useful when a routine includes a lot of kneeling, side-lying work, or extended floor sequences. It may also appeal to people who find hard surfaces uncomfortable. The trade-off is that more foam is not automatically better: a softer or thicker mat can feel less stable during balance work and can make transitions feel less precise. If you regularly practice standing Pilates or exercises where foot and hand stability matter, compare the mat’s firmness as well as its thickness.
Balanced Body also lists a thinner EcoWise Flat Mat at 1/4 inch for people who want less cushioning and more floor feedback. It is better understood as a low-profile option within the same product family, not as a direct substitute for the Aeromat.
Best multipurpose premium mat: Manduka PRO
The Manduka PRO makes more sense than a dedicated Pilates mat when one surface needs to cover Pilates, yoga, strength training, and stretching.
Manduka lists the PRO at 6 mm thick and made from PVC. The standard version measures 66 by 180 cm, while a longer version measures 66 by 215 cm. The brand positions the PRO line as highly durable and suitable for several forms of training. That broader use case is its main advantage: it offers a relatively firm, stable surface for Pilates while also working for yoga and strength exercises.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There are two important compromises. First, it is about 26 inches wide, so it is narrower than the 72-by-23-inch dedicated Pilates models listed above. Second, PVC construction makes it a poor match for shoppers specifically seeking a PVC-free mat. Manduka’s durability language is a brand claim, not a promise that every mat will last a particular number of years, so care, storage, floor type, and use frequency still matter.

- EXTRA THICK FOR COMFORT & BALANCE: Solana firm 1-inch extra thick fitness mat w/ mat strap alleviates stress on pressure points such as joints, hips, hands, and knees. Solana measures 72" X 24" X 1".
- NON-SLIP GRIP: Solana's non-slip material keeps you steady and balanced while staying securely on the floor. The innovative design helps prevent injury and allows you to focus on your practice or workout.
- DURABLE & PORTABLE: Solana's thick, durable material allows for everyday use, regardless of the intensity of your exercise. Solana comes equipped with a nylon carrying strap so you can easily transport it from your home practice to studio salutations.
Best lighter premium crossover: Manduka PROlite
The Manduka PROlite is the crossover choice for people who want a premium mat but expect to carry it to a studio or store it in a smaller space.
Manduka lists the PROlite at 5 mm thick, with standard and long versions, and positions it for studio sessions and flows in more compact spaces. Its lighter construction is easier to transport than the PRO, but it also supplies less cushioning for spine, hip, knee, and wrist pressure. It is therefore a better fit for users who value portability and multipurpose use than for someone seeking the softest surface for long floor-based Pilates sessions.
Best budget option: Gaiam Essentials Fitness Mat
The Gaiam Essentials Fitness Mat is a sensible starting point for a beginner who practices occasionally and wants to spend less before committing to a dedicated Pilates model. Verywell Fit identifies it as a budget option and reports good grip on hard flooring. Gaiam’s official product information places the Essentials line in the exercise and yoga-mat category.
Do not assume that every product sold under the Essentials name has the same dimensions or thickness. Product variants can differ, so check the live listing for the exact model’s measurements, cushioning, material, cleaning instructions, and return terms. A budget mat may be perfectly adequate for short, occasional sessions, but it is less likely to provide the same combination of consistent cushioning, floor stability, and long-term durability as a purpose-built premium mat.
Low-cost Amazon search path: BalanceFrom GoYoga or a comparable thick exercise mat
The BalanceFrom GoYoga All-Purpose Yoga Mat is another low-cost route identified in Pilates-mat coverage. It is an exercise mat that may support beginner Pilates, but “all-purpose yoga mat” should not be treated as equivalent to a dedicated Pilates mat.
Before buying, inspect the exact current listing for thickness, length, width, material, floor traction, seller, and return policy. Listings and variants can change. A thick mat may look attractive on paper but still shift on a smooth floor or compress too much during balance work. If the listing does not clearly state those details, it is safer to choose a product with more complete specifications.
Best grip and alignment crossover: Liforme Classic Yoga Mat
The Liforme Classic Yoga Mat is primarily a yoga mat, but it may suit people who combine Pilates with yoga and value a grippy surface plus visual alignment references.
Recommended Free Tools
Liforme’s product information describes its AlignForMe system of alignment markers and a grip-oriented surface. The markings can serve as visual reference points when setting up a movement, but there is no basis here to claim that they improve Pilates outcomes. The mat also should not be judged as a direct replacement for a thicker dedicated Pilates mat: users who need more cushioning for kneeling or lying work may be better served by AIREX or Balanced Body options.

What to look for before you buy
1. Cushioning and firmness together
Thickness is only a starting point. A thicker mat can reduce pressure from a hard floor, but a very soft mat may compromise balance and control. For most home Pilates users, a supportive mat in roughly the 8–10 mm range is a useful starting category. Choose thicker cushioning if floor comfort is your primary concern; choose a firmer, thinner surface if you want clearer feedback and greater stability.
2. Traction on your actual floor
Test the mat’s underside and surface as separate features. The underside should resist traveling across hardwood, tile, or another smooth floor. The top should keep hands and feet reasonably secure during transitions without becoming so sticky that repositioning is difficult.
Socks, perspiration, dust, and floor finish all affect traction. A mat that behaves well on carpet may not behave identically on polished tile. If possible, buy from a seller with a clear return policy and test the mat in the room where you will use it.
3. Dimensions
A length around 72–75 inches and width around 23–24 inches accommodates most full-body mat exercises. Taller users should check whether their head and heels remain supported during fully extended movements. Users who take up more lateral space may want to look beyond the standard width, even though a wider mat can be heavier and harder to store.
4. Material and cleaning
Closed-cell foam and non-porous surfaces are generally straightforward to wipe clean because they absorb less moisture than open-cell materials. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than applying harsh cleaners by default. AIREX, for example, recommends ordinary soapy water and air-drying for the Pilates 190.
Material labels also matter for personal preferences and sensitivities. If avoiding latex or PVC is important, verify the manufacturer’s current specification for the exact model. Do not infer that one product in a brand’s range has the same material construction as every other product.
5. Portability and storage
Dedicated Pilates mats often provide more cushioning than travel yoga mats, but that usually means more bulk and weight. A mat that remains on a home workout floor can be thicker and heavier. A mat that travels to class should be evaluated for weight, roll diameter, carrying straps, and whether it lies flat without a long settling period.

A Pilates specialist will usually prioritize cushioning and comfort. A yoga-Pilates crossover user may prefer a firmer, thinner, grippier mat such as the Manduka PRO, Manduka PROlite, or Liforme Classic. Those models are not automatically better for Pilates; they simply make more sense when one mat must serve several activities.

A simple decision guide
- Your knees, wrists, hips, or back feel pressure on hard floors: Start with a thicker, supportive option such as the AIREX Pilates 190 or Balanced Body Aeromat. A mat cannot diagnose or treat pain, so persistent or significant symptoms warrant qualified medical advice.
- You want balance and clear floor feedback: Favor a firmer construction, such as the AIREX Pilates 190 or EcoWise, instead of choosing the softest available mat.
- You need to carry the mat: Consider a lighter crossover model such as the Manduka PROlite, while accepting less cushioning.
- You practice yoga and strength training too: The Manduka PRO offers the broadest crossover positioning; the PROlite is the lighter version. Liforme is another option if grip and alignment markings matter.
- You are on a tight budget: Compare the exact Gaiam Essentials or BalanceFrom GoYoga variant. Confirm its measurements and thickness rather than relying on the family name.
- You want to avoid latex, PVC, or chloride: The Balanced Body EcoWise specification is the clearest match among the products discussed, but verify current product information before purchase.
How to care for a Pilates mat
- Wipe the surface after use, especially if it has come into contact with perspiration or bare feet.
- Use the cleaner recommended by the manufacturer; avoid assuming that disinfectants, oils, or abrasive products are compatible.
- Allow the mat to dry fully before rolling it up.
- Store it away from prolonged heat and direct sunlight unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
- Inspect the surface and edges periodically for cracking, permanent compression, or loss of traction.
Antimicrobial treatment, where included, is not the same as sterilization and does not remove the need for ordinary cleaning. A clean, dry storage routine is more useful than treating an antimicrobial label as a substitute for care.
Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should a Pilates mat be?
For general home Pilates, a supportive mat around 8–10 mm is a practical starting point when cushioning is important. A thinner, firmer mat can provide better floor feedback and stability, while a thicker mat can feel more comfortable during kneeling and lying exercises but may feel less stable.
Can I use a yoga mat for Pilates?
Yes, especially for crossover workouts, but many yoga mats are thinner and less cushioned than dedicated Pilates mats. A yoga mat such as the Manduka PRO, PROlite, or Liforme Classic may make sense when you also practice yoga, while a dedicated model is usually better for extended floor-based Pilates.
Is a thicker Pilates mat always better?
No. Thickness improves cushioning only if the mat remains stable. Excessively soft foam can make balance work and transitions feel less secure, so compare firmness, surface grip, and underside traction along with thickness.
How do I clean a Pilates mat?
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. AIREX recommends cleaning the Pilates 190 with ordinary soapy water and allowing it to air-dry. Do not assume that harsh disinfectants or abrasive cleaners are safe for every mat.
The Bottom Line
Choose the AIREX Pilates 190 if you want the best all-around dedicated Pilates mat based on Verywell Fit’s reported testing. Choose the Balanced Body EcoWise for specified material exclusions and textured traction, the Aeromat for extra cushioning, Manduka for Pilates-plus-yoga versatility, and Gaiam or BalanceFrom for a lower-cost entry point. Whichever model you choose, verify the exact current variant’s dimensions, thickness, materials, and return terms before ordering.
