Do you actually need a TV screen cleaner?
Usually, no. Routine TV dirt is generally dust, fingerprints, and light oils. A dry, clean microfiber cloth handles loose dust. Distilled water applied sparingly to the cloth handles many fingerprints without introducing a stronger chemical to the panel.
LG explicitly says that no special product is necessary for periodic screen cleaning. Samsung recommends distilled water on a microfiber cloth when dry wiping is not enough. Sony advises checking with the TV manufacturer before using a commercial chemical or cleaning cloth.
A dedicated cleaner can still be useful if you frequently clean several screens, want a prepackaged bottle and cloth, or regularly deal with oily marks. Its advantages are convenience and controlled packaging—not an automatic cleaning advantage. The quality and cleanliness of the cloth may matter more than the liquid.

This is the safest and best-value default for most OLED, QLED, LCD, LED-backlit LCD, Mini-LED, and plasma televisions. “LED TV” normally means an LCD panel illuminated by LEDs; it does not necessarily have a fundamentally different cleaning surface.
- Dry microfiber: for dust and light marks.
- Distilled water: for fingerprints or residue that dry wiping does not remove.
- Two cloths: one slightly damp cloth and one clean, dry cloth for finishing.
Distilled water is preferable to tap water because it contains fewer dissolved minerals that can leave spotting or residue. It is not a solvent, so it will not remove every substance safely. For unknown, dried, or sticky material, consult the TV maker’s instructions rather than escalating immediately to household chemicals.
How to clean a TV screen safely
- Turn the TV off and unplug it.
- Let the panel cool. Cleaning a warm screen can encourage streaks and uneven drying.
- Remove loose dust first. Use a clean, dry, soft microfiber cloth or a gentle duster. Do not grind dust into the coating.
- Use very light pressure. Make light overlapping passes in one direction. Do not scrub or press hard.
- Dampen the cloth only if necessary. Put a small amount of distilled water—or permitted screen cleaner—on the cloth. The cloth should be barely damp, never wet or dripping.
- Never spray the panel. Keep liquid away from the lower edge, bezel, speakers, controls, and ports.
- Finish with a second dry microfiber cloth. Remove remaining moisture with light passes.
- Let the screen dry fully before reconnecting power.

How to choose a microfiber cloth
“Microfiber” by itself is not a quality guarantee. Choose a cloth that is:
- soft, lint-free, and non-abrasive;
- low-pile or smooth enough for lenses and displays;

- free of grit, sand, hair, and trapped debris;
- washed without fabric softener, grease, or heavy fragrance; and
- completely dry before use.
A contaminated or rough cloth can create scratches or streaks even when the cleaning liquid is appropriate. Keep a separate dry cloth for the final pass.
Best dedicated cleaner: WHOOSH! Screen Shine

Best alternative to liquid: dedicated microfiber cloths
If your TV mainly collects dust, buying several high-quality display cloths is a lower-risk alternative to buying cleaning fluid. WHOOSH! listed a 3XL cloth at $12.99, while Screen Mom listed cloth packs from approximately $7.99 to $14.99 in the supplied material.
Do not choose solely by pack size. A large collection of low-quality or contaminated cloths is worse than two clean, soft, display-appropriate cloths. Wash them separately or according to the maker’s instructions and retire any cloth that feels rough or contains grit.
Never use these products or habits
Keep the following away from an ordinary TV screen unless the exact model instructions explicitly permit them:
- window or glass cleaner;
- ammonia;
- alcohol or alcohol wipes;
- acetone, benzene, paint thinner, or other solvents;
- soap or detergent mixtures;
- scouring powder, wax, or polish;
- paper towels, facial tissues, and rough rags;
- abrasive sponges and melamine foam; and
- any product that tells you to spray directly onto the panel.
Samsung specifically warns against window cleaner, soap, scouring powder, wax, and cleaners containing alcohol, benzene, ammonia, or acetone, as well as paper towels and abrasive pads. LG warns against abrasives, wax, benzene, alcohol, automotive polish, and industrial polish. Sony warns against insecticides, benzene, thinners, harsh chemicals, and unverified commercial cleaners.

Why direct spraying is risky
Liquid sprayed onto the panel can run down the surface and enter the lower edge, bezel, speakers, buttons, ports, or internal electronics. That may cause malfunction, staining, or electrical damage. Direct spraying also makes it easier to over-apply the product and leave residue.
Samsung, LG, and Sony all advise against spraying liquid directly on the screen. Spray or pour a small amount onto the cloth instead, and keep the cloth barely damp.
Removing fingerprints, grease, and dried spots
Use this staged approach:
- Gently lift loose particles with a dry cloth.
- Try a clean, dry microfiber pass.
- Use distilled water on the cloth if the mark remains.
- Use a dedicated screen formula only if the manufacturer permits it for your model.
- Finish with a dry cloth.
Never scrape dried material with a fingernail, card, blade, or plastic tool. If you cannot identify the substance, stop and consult the model manual or manufacturer support.
Sony describes a narrow exception for oil-marker ink: a non-soap synthetic cleanser diluted to less than 1% with water, applied to a tightly wrung cloth and followed immediately by dry wiping. This is Sony-specific guidance for that situation, not general permission to use detergent on other TVs.

Samsung also describes a melamine-foam exception for certain Frame and Serif TV reflective surfaces. Do not generalize that exception to ordinary OLED, QLED, LCD, Mini-LED, or plasma screens.
How to remove streaks and cloudy residue
- Use less liquid on the next pass.
- Replace a dirty or saturated cloth with a clean one.
- Follow the damp pass with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Work only on a cool, switched-off screen.
- Avoid repeatedly buffing one spot with pressure.
- If haze or blotching remains after the panel dries, stop using stronger chemicals and contact the manufacturer.
Streaks can result from too much solution, a dirty cloth, residue from an earlier product, a warm panel, or uneven pressure. A persistent haze may instead indicate damage or alteration to an anti-glare coating. Not every cloudy mark is removable dirt.

How often should you clean a TV?
Clean the panel when dust or marks are visible rather than following an invented universal schedule. Light dust can be removed as needed; fingerprints are best spot-cleaned promptly. Homes with children or pets may need more frequent inspection.
Clean vents and rear surfaces separately and gently. Sony recommends vacuuming dust around vented areas once a month to reduce overheating and failure risk. That instruction concerns ventilation areas—not vacuuming the screen itself.

Can I use Windex on my TV?
No. Window and glass cleaners may contain ammonia, alcohol, solvents, or other ingredients that can damage or alter screen coatings. Use dry microfiber first, then distilled water on the cloth if needed.

Can I use distilled water?
