New Google Nest Lineup Puts 2K Video and Gemini Front and Center

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s refreshed wired Nest security lineup includes the Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen), and—on the U.S. Store—the Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen). All three offer 2K HDR video, while Gemini adds more descriptive alerts, searchable video history, event explanations, and Daily Summaries. The catch is important: basic monitoring works without a subscription, but many of the features that make Gemini compelling require Google Home Premium Advanced.

What is in the new Nest lineup?

Google’s current U.S. wired lineup is made up of three products:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Product Best for Video
Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) Rooms, pets, children, and entryways 2K HDR
Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) Yards, driveways, patios, and exterior approaches 2K HDR
Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) Front-door and package monitoring 2K HDR

Google’s U.S. camera comparison lists the two wired cameras with a 152-degree diagonal field of view and a 16:9 aspect ratio. This is a wired refresh—not a replacement for every Nest camera. Google still lists battery Nest Cam models at 1080p HDR, so buyers who need flexible, cable-free placement are choosing a different product category.

There is also a regional naming discrepancy. Google’s U.S. Store calls the doorbell the wired, 3rd gen, while a Canadian-language promotional page calls it wired, 2nd gen. U.S. buyers should use the U.S. Store name and confirm the exact regional model listing before ordering.

#1 Best Overall
Google Nest Cam Outdoor (Wired, 2nd Gen) - Security Camera - Snow - 2 Pack | 2K video, motion detection, color night vision, 2-way audio, works with Google Home and Gemini, weather resistant
  • Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Outdoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
  • Stay in the know with always-on power: Nest Cam Outdoor keeps you plugged into home, day and night, with no need to recharge or replace batteries
  • Google Nest Cam Outdoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification,
and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a
green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
  • With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Rabbits eating garden plants”[3]; get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
  • Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; a wider, taller field of view means almost nothing’s out of frame[1] – even in a long driveway or big yard

What 2K HDR changes in practice

2K is the hardware improvement. Compared with older 1080p cameras, the higher-resolution image can preserve more detail when you view or digitally crop footage. That can help with faces, packages, signs, labels, and people farther from the camera. It is particularly useful when a wide-angle view captures a large area but you need to inspect one part of the frame.

Google says the wired cameras provide 2K HDR and a 152-degree diagonal field of view. However, “2K” is not a guarantee that every stream will always arrive at maximum resolution. Google says 2K availability depends on Wi-Fi and network conditions and requires at least 3.3 Mbps connectivity speed. Lighting, focus, compression, the viewing device, and camera placement also affect the result.

Higher resolution will not automatically fix poor night footage. A camera pointed toward glare, mounted too high, or lacking useful lighting may produce less actionable video than a lower-resolution camera installed at a better angle.

What Gemini adds

Gemini is primarily a software and subscription upgrade, not a new camera sensor. Google says Gemini can help the system interpret security events and present them in more useful language.

  • Detection: The system identifies an event or category such as a person, animal, vehicle, or package.
  • Description: Gemini attempts to explain what happened in more natural language.
  • Search: You can look through recorded video using natural-language queries instead of manually scrubbing a timeline.
  • Summary: Daily Summaries condense multiple events into a shorter digest.

Google also promotes more descriptive notifications, additional context around alerts, searchable video history, event descriptions, Daily Summaries, and AI assistance for creating home automations.

These features should be treated as assistance, not as proof of identity, intent, or wrongdoing. Google warns that Gemini results may vary, features can change, and users should check responses for accuracy. Availability can also depend on country, language, camera, account, Google Home app version, subscription tier, and rollout status. Google’s promotional material says Gemini for Home experiences began early access in the U.S. in October, but it does not provide a complete device-by-device rollout matrix for every market.

Google Nest Cam Indoor (Wired, 3rd Gen) - Security Camera - 2025 - Snow | 2K video, motion detection, color night vision, 2-way audio, works with Google Home and Gemini, intelligent alerts
  • Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Indoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
  • With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Kids are playing soccer in the living room”[3]; and get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
  • Google Nest Cam Indoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification,
and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a
green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
  • Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; and with a wider, taller field of view, you can see even more of a long hallway or large room[1]
  • Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)

What works without paying for a subscription?

A paid plan is not required for basic use. Google’s current U.S. Store pages list these included capabilities for the wired cameras:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Live view
  • Two-way talk and listen
  • Built-in intelligent alerts
  • Person, animal, and vehicle detection
  • Activity Zones
  • Six hours of event-video previews
  • Clips of up to 10 seconds for the wired cameras

The wired Nest Doorbell also includes basic intelligent alerts and six hours of event previews without a paid plan. That makes the cameras usable as ordinary connected security devices, but the available history is limited. “No subscription” does not mean “no useful features”; it means less retained footage and fewer advanced AI tools.

Google Home Premium: Standard versus Advanced

Google’s U.S. camera and doorbell product pages currently list the following plan structure:

Plan Price Listed additions
Included No subscription Six hours of event previews
Google Home Premium Standard $10/month or $100/year 30 days of event-based history, whole-home history, and automation assistance
Google Home Premium Advanced $20/month or $200/year 60 days of event history, 10 days of 24/7 continuous history, descriptive notifications, searchable video history, event descriptions, and Daily Summaries

The annual plans reduce the equivalent monthly cost to about $8.33 for Standard and $16.67 for Advanced. Google says one Home Premium subscription covers security features across the Google smart-home ecosystem, rather than requiring a separate plan for each supported device.

There is an unresolved inconsistency in Google’s own promotional material: a broader Home page says plans start at US$13 per month, while the current U.S. camera and doorbell pages list Standard at $10 per month and Advanced at $20 per month. For a camera purchase calculation, the product-page prices are the clearer figures, but check the checkout page for the latest price in your account and region.

Model-by-model buying advice

Choose the Nest Cam Indoor if you need simple indoor coverage

The wired Indoor Cam is the most straightforward choice for a living room, nursery, pet area, hallway, or interior entryway where an outlet is nearby. It is the least complicated way to enter Google’s new 2K lineup if you do not need weather resistance.

Rank #3
Google Nest Cam Outdoor or Indoor, Battery - Wireless Security Camera | Home security camera, built-in intelligent alerts, 1080p HDR video, works with Google Home and Alexa
  • Nest Cam has built-in intelligence and can tell the difference between a person, animal, and vehicle and send alerts directly through the Google Home app[1], no subscription required.Controller Type:Google Assistant.Connectivity protocol:Bluetooth;Wi-Fi.Power source type:Battery Powered.Operating Temperature : –4°F to 104°F (–20°C to 40°C).
  • Easily check in from anywhere 24/7 with 1080p HDR video[1] with night vision, and see what you missed with 3 hours of free event video history[2]; add a Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) for up to 60 days of video history[3]
  • If your Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage, Nest Cam will store up to an hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed[4]. Nest Cam Outdoor comes with a wall plate that can be mounted on your brick wall.
  • Put Nest Cam anywhere, outside or in; it’s battery powered, so you don’t need to set it up near an outlet, and the magnetic mount makes installation effortless
  • For continuous power and 24/7 video recording with Nest Aware Plus, add a weatherproof power cable or indoor stand with power cable (both sold separately)

It is a poor fit if you rent and cannot place the camera where a cable can reach, or if you expect to move it frequently. In those cases, Google’s battery Nest Cam is the more flexible internal alternative, although Google’s comparison lists that model at 1080p HDR rather than 2K HDR.

Choose the Nest Cam Outdoor for permanent exterior coverage

The wired Outdoor Cam is intended for a yard, driveway, patio, or exterior approach. It makes sense when you can provide safe, permanent power and want the same Google Home, 2K, and Gemini ecosystem outside.

Plan the cable route before buying. A permanently powered outdoor camera can offer advantages over a battery model, but installation is less flexible. It is not the best choice for a location without convenient power, a buyer seeking cellular backup, or someone who expects local recording.

Choose the Nest Doorbell for front-door context

The wired Nest Doorbell is the logical choice when the front door is the priority and compatible low-voltage doorbell wiring is already installed. Its value comes from combining door-area video with package and visitor-related alerts, context, and—on Advanced—searchable history and descriptive notifications.

The U.S. Store currently lists the doorbell at $179.99, with a displayed financing option of $15 per month for 12 months. The product page also advertises one month of Google Home Premium Advanced with purchase.

Before ordering, verify the doorbell’s electrical requirements and chime compatibility on Google’s current technical-specification page for your region. A contemporaneous launch report described requirements of a 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA transformer and chime, but the abbreviated Store text reviewed here does not establish those details for every market.

The real cost of the Gemini experience

The hardware price is only part of the decision if you want searchable history, event descriptions, and Daily Summaries. Using the listed U.S. doorbell price and current plan prices, first-year costs before tax are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Doorbell plus Standard for one year: $179.99 + $100 = $279.99.
  • Doorbell plus Advanced for one year: $179.99 + $200 = $379.99.

For the cameras, Google’s launch coverage reported approximately $99 for the Indoor Cam and $149 for the Outdoor Cam, but those launch prices should not be assumed to be current. At those illustrative hardware prices, first-year ownership with Advanced would be approximately $339.99 for the indoor model and $389.99 for the outdoor model, before tax. Confirm the live Store price before purchasing.

For a two-year comparison, subscription cost becomes even more significant: Advanced adds $400 over two years, while Standard adds $200 when paid annually. That recurring charge is the central trade-off behind the new lineup.

Wired power, cloud history, and privacy trade-offs

All three headline products are wired. Continuous power can be useful for dependable monitoring and makes 24/7 history possible with the appropriate plan, but it restricts placement and can require installation work.

The Store pages describe event-based history and subscription-based 24/7 history. They do not establish that these products include local microSD recording or a fully offline recording mode. Do not buy them expecting local-storage resilience unless a current regional specification explicitly confirms it.

The system also depends on the Google Home app, a Google account, an Internet connection, and Google’s cloud services. A network outage, account issue, feature rollout change, or unsupported language can affect the experience. Buyers who prioritize local storage, offline operation, cellular backup, or no recurring fee should compare other ecosystems before committing.

Who should buy—and who should skip—the new Nest lineup?

Buy it if:

  • You already use Google Home and want one app for cameras, alerts, and automations.
  • You can provide permanent power.
  • You value 2K detail for wider scenes and digital cropping.
  • You are comfortable paying for cloud history and Advanced features.
  • You want natural-language video search and summaries more than manual timeline review.

Skip it or choose an alternative if:

  • You need battery-powered placement.
  • You want local recording or a fully offline security system.
  • You only need occasional live viewing and basic alerts, making Advanced poor value.
  • Your doorbell wiring or chime is incompatible.
  • You prefer a different smart-home ecosystem. Ring is the obvious comparison path for Alexa households, while Arlo is relevant for buyers comparing a wider mixture of wireless and wired hardware; exact features and plan terms vary by model.

Bottom line

The new Nest lineup is best understood as two upgrades sold together: 2K HDR improves the camera hardware, while Gemini improves how Google Home interprets and retrieves video. The Indoor Cam is the sensible indoor entry point, the Outdoor Cam suits locations with permanent exterior power, and the wired Doorbell is the front-door choice for homes with compatible wiring.

Basic monitoring remains available without a subscription, but the most distinctive Gemini security features sit in Google Home Premium Advanced. For Google Home households willing to accept cloud dependence and a recurring fee, that combination can make security footage easier to understand and search. For battery users, local-storage buyers, and no-subscription shoppers, the new lineup is considerably less compelling.
