The Best Sonos Speakers to Buy in 2026

The best Sonos speaker for most people in 2026 is the Sonos Era 100. It is compact, versatile, supports Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Trueplay and multiroom audio, and can later become part of a stereo or home-theater system. But it is not the best choice for every room: the Era 300 is better for spatial audio, the Five suits serious music listening, the Move 2 is the best home-and-outdoor option, and the Beam (Gen 2) is the strongest compact TV soundbar.

Sonos is an ecosystem rather than a single speaker type. The right purchase depends on whether you want music, television sound, portability, analog inputs, voice control or a system you can expand. This guide separates standalone speakers, portable models and soundbars so you can choose the right product without paying for features you will not use.

Sonos’ current catalog includes these models alongside products such as Sub Mini, Sub and Sub 4. Check the official Sonos catalog and support product list for regional availability and compatibility.

Which Sonos speaker should you buy?

  • One mains-powered speaker for a bedroom, kitchen or office: Era 100.
  • A cheaper speaker without voice control: Era 100 SL.
  • Dolby Atmos music or immersive listening: Era 300.
  • The biggest music sound from one cabinet: Five.
  • Indoor and patio listening: Move 2.
  • A speaker for a suitcase or day trip: Roam 2.
  • TV sound in a small or medium room: Beam (Gen 2).
  • A premium living-room theater: Arc Ultra.
  • A TV with only optical output: Ray.

Sonos Era 100: best overall

The Era 100 is the safest recommendation for most Sonos buyers. Its compact bookshelf-friendly design combines a stereo presentation from two angled tweeters and a midwoofer with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, AirPlay 2, Trueplay, touch controls and optional voice control.

Sonos Era 100 SL - Black (Pack of 2)
  • The information below is per-pack only
  • Dual angled tweeters and a powerful midwoofer deliver rich, balanced stereo sound with deep bass.
  • The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
  • Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.
  • Go from unboxing to incredible sound in minutes with a quick plug-in and the Sonos app

It can work alone, pair with another Era 100 for stereo, join a multiroom system or serve as rear speakers with a compatible Ray, Beam, Arc Ultra or Amp. It also supports analog sources through the separately sold Sonos Line-In Adapter.

Sonos lists dimensions of 7.19 × 4.72 × 5.14 inches and a weight of 4.45 pounds. It uses an internal 100–240V power supply and must remain near a mains outlet. The product page also lists Trueplay support for iOS and Android, subject to current software and regional availability.

Why buy the Era 100?

  • It fits more rooms and budgets than the larger models.
  • It offers Bluetooth as well as Sonos Wi-Fi streaming.
  • It can grow into a stereo pair or surround system.
  • It supports AirPlay 2 and Trueplay.
  • It is more flexible than the Five and less specialized than the Era 300.

Why skip it?

It is not portable, a single unit is not the same as a true left/right stereo pair, and line-in requires an adapter. Choose the Era 300 if immersive music is your priority, or the Five if you want a larger, more substantial music-first speaker.

Sonos Era 100 SL: best value and best without a microphone

The Era 100 SL is the better choice for buyers who do not want built-in voice control. It retains Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, touch controls, line-in readiness and stereo-pairing capability, while omitting the microphone and associated voice-control features.

That makes it particularly suitable for bedrooms, offices, secondary rooms and stereo pairs. It is not a battery speaker, and it should not be described as completely identical to the Era 100: the absence of built-in voice control is a material difference. The official Era 100 SL page specifically highlights Trueplay for iOS, while the regular Era 100 page lists iOS and Android support, so check the current regional specification before buying.

Sonos pricing changes frequently. Retrieved U.S. store pages showed different prices and discounts for Era 100 and Era 100 SL, so treat any saving as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent price relationship.

Sonos Era 300: best for spatial audio

Choose the Era 300 when compatible Dolby Atmos music and an enveloping presentation matter more than compact size or value. Sonos positions it as a spatial-audio speaker, and it can also be used as a surround speaker in compatible home-theater systems.

The main advantage is content-dependent. Ordinary stereo music does not automatically justify the price premium, and placement matters because the speaker relies on room interaction for its spatial effect. In a small room, an Era 100 may be the more sensible purchase. In a larger room, or for a listener with a substantial Dolby Atmos music library, the Era 300 makes more sense.

  • Trueplay fine-tunes Era 100 SL for the unique acoustics of the room.

Do not confuse product support with guaranteed immersive playback. The music service, specific recording, app and playback configuration all determine whether you actually receive spatial content.

Sonos Five: best for serious music listening

The Five is the music-first option for buyers who want a substantial powered speaker and do not need portability or voice control. Sonos positions it as a flagship hi-fi speaker with deep bass and built-in line-in, making it the cleanest choice here for a turntable or other analog source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A single Five can produce greater physical scale than a single Era 100, while two Era 100s may provide a more convincing left/right stereo image for some rooms and budgets. Two Fives are the premium stereo configuration, but the cost and cabinet size are considerable.

Choose Five for a dedicated listening room, strong output and a built-in analog connection. Skip it if you need a battery, voice control, a compact speaker or a straightforward route into a small TV system.

Move 2 versus Roam 2

Move 2: best for home-and-outdoor portability

Move 2 is the portable Sonos speaker for patios, kitchens, gardens and moving around the home. It combines Sonos multiroom functionality over Wi-Fi with Bluetooth use away from the home network, and its larger form is intended to deliver more output than Roam 2.

Its trade-off is practical rather than technical: it is heavy and comparatively expensive for travel. Think of Move 2 as a portable home speaker that can go to the patio, not a small travel speaker.

Roam 2: best for travel

Roam 2 is the choice when minimum size, waterproofing and Bluetooth portability matter most. It is suitable for travel, bathrooms, balconies and casual outdoor listening, but its smaller enclosure cannot replace Move 2 for large-room bass or high-volume playback.

The simple rule is: Roam 2 goes in a bag, Move 2 goes from room to patio, and Era 100 or Five stays in one place. Battery life varies with volume, temperature, usage and connection conditions, so do not compare portable speakers on a single headline figure alone.

  • The new acoustic architecture replaces Move's single tweeter with two, unlocking a higher-fidelity stereo soundstage with crisp vocals and detailed instruments. With deep, dynamic bass powered by the precision-tuned woofer, you'll feel the emotional charge of a live performance.
  • With automatic Trueplay tuning, Move 2 continually optimizes the sound for its surroundings. So, no matter where you are or what you play, you get the best listening experience.
  • Listen twice as long as with the previous generation. All the acoustic updates work in concert for increased efficiency, giving you up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge.
  • Shock absorbent materials protect against accidental drops, and the IP56 rating ensures spills, splashes, rain, dirt, and dust don't dampen your listening experience.
  • Use the built-in handle to bring your music from one place to the next. When the battery needs a boost, set Move 2 on the included Wireless Charging Base, upgraded with a detachable power cable and more compact adapter. Charge on the go with any USB-PD power supply.

Era 100, Era 300 or Five?

Priority Best choice Reason
Balanced features and price Era 100 Most flexible size and feature set
No microphone Era 100 SL or Five Era 100 SL saves space and money; Five offers a larger music presentation
Spatial music Era 300 Designed for Dolby Atmos and immersive content
Analog source Five Built-in line-in; Era models need an adapter
Affordable stereo Two Era 100 or Era 100 SL Matching pairs create dedicated left and right channels
Large-scale single-speaker listening Five Larger cabinet and music-first design

None of these is universally “best sounding.” The appropriate choice depends on room size, content, placement, listening distance and whether you prefer stereo imaging, spatial effects or physical scale.

Best Sonos soundbars for TV

Beam (Gen 2): best compact soundbar

Beam (Gen 2) is the strongest all-round choice for apartments, bedrooms and ordinary living rooms. It improves dialogue and scale over built-in TV speakers, supports Dolby Atmos and can later be expanded with surrounds and a subwoofer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It connects through HDMI ARC or eARC. Its Atmos effect is created through processing and psychoacoustic techniques rather than a full set of physical up-firing speakers, so room shape and ceiling reflections affect the result. It is also important to distinguish Atmos support from Atmos playback: the television, source device, streaming service, program and HDMI settings must all pass an Atmos signal.

Sonos says HDMI ARC or eARC is required for Atmos from a TV. HDMI eARC is required for lossless Dolby Atmos using Dolby TrueHD. See the Sonos Atmos compatibility guide before buying.

Arc Ultra: best premium home theater

Arc Ultra is the premium starting point for a Sonos theater. It offers a broader front soundstage than Beam (Gen 2), uses Sonos Sound Motion technology and is better suited to large or open-plan rooms. It is also the logical foundation for a more ambitious system with Sub 4 and Era 100 or Era 300 surrounds.

The full-system cost matters. An Arc Ultra is only the beginning if you add a subwoofer, two rear speakers, stands or wall mounts. A Beam can be the better purchase in a small room, especially when the TV is close to the listener or the budget is limited. Arc Ultra is also a poor fit for a television without suitable HDMI ARC/eARC connectivity.

Ray: best low-cost TV upgrade

Ray is the simplest way into Sonos TV audio and suits small rooms or televisions with optical output. It can be a substantial improvement over built-in speakers, but it does not support Dolby Atmos and uses a more limited connection path than Beam or Arc Ultra.

If your TV supports HDMI ARC/eARC and the price difference is modest, Beam (Gen 2) is usually the more future-proof purchase. Choose Ray when optical compatibility, compactness or the lowest sensible cost matters most.

Which Sonos speakers work as surrounds?

Era 100 can be used as rear speakers with Ray, Beam, Arc Ultra or Amp. Era 300 can also serve as surrounds in compatible home-theater configurations. Matching pairs are normally the sensible choice: one speaker does not create a conventional left/right rear pair.

For an affordable compact system, pair Beam (Gen 2) with two Era 100s. For a larger premium theater, Arc Ultra with two Era 300s and a Sub 4 is the ambitious configuration—but it is not automatically the best value. Room size, seating position and listening habits should determine whether the extra speakers are worthwhile.

Turntables and other analog sources

Five is the cleanest Sonos choice when you want a built-in line-in connection. Era 100 and Era 100 SL can accept analog audio through the separately sold Line-In Adapter. A turntable may also require its own phono preamp, depending on whether it provides line-level output.

Do not assume that every CD player, turntable or wired source can connect directly. Check both the source’s output level and the Sonos product’s input requirements before ordering.

What owners of older Sonos speakers should know

Sonos support still lists older products including One, One SL, Play:1, Play:3, Play:5, the original Move and older soundbars. New and old products may use different app generations or have feature limitations. Check the specific model before assuming that it will combine seamlessly with Era, Move 2, Roam 2 or current soundbars.

For an owner of One, One SL or Play:1, Era 100 is the most straightforward modern replacement or expansion. If you specifically want spatial audio, move to Era 300; if you want a portable companion, choose Move 2 or Roam 2 instead of trying to make a fixed-location speaker serve outdoors.

Connectivity and buying checklist

  1. Check the TV connection. Beam and Arc Ultra need HDMI ARC/eARC for integrated TV audio and Atmos. Ray is the simpler option for optical-only televisions.
  2. Confirm Wi-Fi. Sonos relies on a network for its full multiroom experience. Wi-Fi standards and compatibility vary by product generation; consult Sonos’ supported Wi-Fi documentation.
  3. Decide whether Bluetooth is essential. It is useful away from home Wi-Fi, especially on Move 2 and Roam 2.
  4. Check the input requirement. Era 100 and Era 100 SL need the Line-In Adapter; Five has built-in line-in.
  5. Decide about microphones. Choose Era 100 SL if you do not want built-in voice control. Voice features also vary by language and country.
  6. Budget for the whole system. Include two surrounds, a subwoofer, stands, wall mounts and adapters—not just the headline soundbar price.
  7. Check the current price. Sonos promotions change by date, region, color and bundle. A displayed comparison price is not proof that a discount is permanent.
  8. Check placement. Era 300 and Arc Ultra benefit especially from careful positioning, while portable and fixed speakers have different practical requirements.

Best Sonos systems to build

  • Affordable music room: one Era 100 or Era 100 SL.
  • Better stereo music: two matching Era 100s or Era 100 SLs.
  • Spatial music: one or two Era 300s, provided you regularly listen to compatible content.
  • Compact TV: Beam (Gen 2), optionally followed by two Era 100 surrounds.
  • Premium theater: Arc Ultra, two Era 300 surrounds and a Sub 4, if the room and budget justify it.
  • Indoor/outdoor listening: Era 100 indoors plus Move 2 or Roam 2 outside, depending on how portable the second speaker needs to be.

Sonos makes the most sense if you value synchronized multiroom audio, app control, AirPlay 2, supported music services and a coherent expansion path. A traditional receiver and passive speakers may be better if you need many physical inputs and maximum upgrade flexibility. A conventional Bluetooth speaker may offer better value if you only want simple portable playback.
