The Best Smart Locks for 2026: Top Picks for Apple Home, Matter, Renters and More

The best smart lock depends on your door and smart-home ecosystem. Compare full replacements, retrofit locks, Apple Home Key, Matter-over-Thread, fingerprint and video models.

For most homeowners replacing a complete deadbolt, the Schlage Encode Plus is the most practical starting point: it combines a keypad, remote control, status checking and unique access codes through the Schlage Home app when connected to Wi-Fi. Apple Home and Home Key buyers should verify the exact Encode Plus model, trim and regional SKU before ordering.

There is no universal best smart lock. The right choice depends first on the door and then on the smart-home platform. The shortlist below separates full deadbolt replacements from retrofit locks, and distinguishes Apple Home/Home Key, Matter-over-Thread, fingerprint and camera-equipped models. It is a synthesis of current manufacturer information and reputable third-party testing; it does not claim that this publisher personally tested 30 locks.

Best smart locks at a glance

These are category recommendations rather than a claim that one lock wins every home. Forbes has favored the Level Lock Pro after team testing, while other review outlets have selected different models. That disagreement is useful: hardware fit, connectivity and fallback entry matter more than a single overall score.

Pick Best for Lock type Important qualification
Schlage Encode Plus Most full-replacement buyers who want a built-in keypad and Wi-Fi Full deadbolt replacement Confirm the exact model and trim; Encode variants do not all have the same connectivity or features.
Schlage Sense Pro Premium hands-free access and a newer Matter-over-Thread setup Full replacement UWB and Thread features come with higher cost and hub or border-router considerations. Tom’s Guide reported a June 2026 launch at approximately $399; check the current price.
Aqara U400 Apple Home, UWB, fingerprint and Matter-over-Thread in one lock Full replacement Verify door-cylinder compatibility and the need for a Thread-enabled home hub.
Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus Apple Home/Home Key buyers who also want Yale’s ecosystem Full replacement Matter features differ across Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings; a compatible Thread border router may be required.
Level Lock Pro A discreet, conventional-looking installation Full replacement Its concealed hardware is the main attraction. Check the exact connectivity configuration, door fit and available unlock methods.
August Wi-Fi Smart Lock Renters or homeowners who want to preserve the exterior key cylinder Interior retrofit The Wi-Fi bridge and keypad are configuration-dependent accessories, not features to assume are included with every package.
Eufy Smart Lock Touch and Wi-Fi S230 Fingerprint access, access logs and app-based convenience Full replacement Keep the ordinary biometric models separate from Eufy’s larger camera-equipped locks.
Eufy Video Smart Lock S330 A front-door lock with an integrated camera Full replacement A camera adds monitoring capability, physical size, privacy decisions and additional battery considerations.
Nuki Smart Lock Ultra Retrofit buyers in markets where Nuki is available Retrofit Availability and model configuration vary by country; confirm United States support before importing or ordering.

When comparing smart locks for front doors, begin with the door’s mechanical compatibility. A lock that cannot operate a misaligned or binding deadbolt reliably is not made useful by a better app.

Choose the lock type before comparing brands

Full replacement deadbolts

A full replacement removes the existing exterior and interior deadbolt hardware. Depending on the model, the new assembly may include a keypad, fingerprint reader, built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread or a combination of those features.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This is usually the cleanest route for a homeowner who wants a new keypad or a different exterior design. It also creates the greatest compatibility responsibility: the replacement must match the door thickness, backset, bore and strike position, and the exterior cylinder or keyway must fit the door hardware.

Interior retrofit locks

A retrofit lock replaces the inside thumb-turn while leaving the exterior deadbolt cylinder and key in place. This is often the better answer for renters, older homes with unusual exterior hardware or households that want to keep using existing keys.

  • 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: Create up to 100 custom passcodes for family, friends, or renters. Easily share unlimited one-time or scheduled codes to guests, cleaners, or deliveries— no need to be home to open the door.

August is the clearest mainstream example in this comparison. Nuki’s Smart Lock Ultra is another retrofit-focused product, although its availability is more market-dependent. A retrofit lock still needs a correctly aligned deadbolt: preserving the outside cylinder does not excuse a door that requires force to lock.

Apple Home and Home Key locks

Apple Home compatibility and Apple Home Key are related but should not be treated as identical. Home Key allows an authorized Apple device or wallet credential to act as an entry method on supported lock models. It is a model-level feature, not something to assume from the manufacturer name.

Schlage Encode Plus, Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus, Aqara U100 and U400, and some Level products appear in current Apple Home discussions. Check the exact product page, regional SKU and firmware notes. A brand may sell several locks with similar names but different radios, keypads or Home Key support.

Matter-over-Thread locks

Matter is a smart-home interoperability standard; it is not itself a radio. A lock can use Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread, and the ownership experience can still vary by ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matter-over-Thread models such as the Schlage Sense Pro and Aqara U400 can require a compatible Thread border router or smart-home hub. Matter does not automatically eliminate the need for a hub. Yale’s own documentation illustrates why the ecosystem matters: activity feeds, entry-code management and other features can differ between Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings.

The best smart locks by use case

Best full-replacement choice for most connected homes: Schlage Encode Plus

The Schlage Encode Plus is a strong practical choice when the project calls for a conventional full deadbolt replacement with a keypad and built-in Wi-Fi. Schlage says the lock can provide remote locking and unlocking, lock-status checking and unique access codes through the Schlage Home app when it is connected to Wi-Fi.

It is especially relevant to Apple Home shoppers because the Encode Plus—not every Encode-branded product—belongs in the Home Key discussion. Confirm the exact model number and trim before purchase. A similar-looking Encode variant may use a different connection method or omit a feature you expected.

Choose it when: you want a keypad, app control and remote access without relying on a separate Wi-Fi bridge, and you are comfortable with a complete deadbolt replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think twice when: you are renting, need to preserve the existing exterior key cylinder, or specifically want fingerprint, UWB hands-free access or a camera.

Best premium hands-free option: Schlage Sense Pro

The Sense Pro is aimed at buyers who want a newer smart-home architecture and hands-free proximity access. Schlage describes it as a Matter-over-Thread deadbolt with UWB-based hands-free access and broad smart-home interoperability.

Tom’s Guide reported a June 2026 launch at approximately $399. That is a launch reference, not a permanent current price, so check the live listing before publication or purchase. The cost is easier to justify for a household that will actually use UWB and already has the required smart-home infrastructure.

There is also a setup trade-off. Tom’s Guide advises choosing between a direct Apple Home/Thread setup and the Schlage app’s Wi-Fi path rather than treating both as a recommended simultaneous configuration. Buyers should decide whether their priority is native ecosystem operation or Schlage’s app-based remote route before installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when: you want hands-free proximity unlocking, Matter-over-Thread and a premium full-replacement lock.

Think twice when: you want the lowest purchase price, do not have a compatible Thread border router, or prefer a simple keypad-and-Wi-Fi installation.

Best Apple Home and Matter combination: Aqara U400

The Aqara U400 brings an unusually broad set of entry methods to a full-replacement lock. Aqara lists Matter-over-Thread, UWB, NFC, fingerprint recognition, one-time and recurring passcodes, app access, voice-assistant support and a traditional mechanical key.

It is particularly interesting for Apple Home users because UWB and Home Key can reduce the need to open an app or type a code. Aqara also identifies compatibility with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant and SmartThings. Compatibility does not mean every feature behaves identically in every platform, however.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before ordering, verify the door-cylinder and deadbolt requirements and whether the intended setup needs a Thread-enabled home hub. The U400 should not be used as a stand-in for the Aqara U100 or U200: those are separate models with different hardware and connection paths.

  • Integrated eufy ecosystem: If you have a eufy doorbell, you can add your wifi door lock to your routines and control devices together for keyless entry within the eufy Security app.

Choose it when: you want to combine fingerprint entry, Apple Home/Home Key, UWB and Matter-over-Thread.

Think twice when: your door has an unusual cylinder, you do not have the necessary Thread infrastructure, or you want the least complicated installation.

Best Yale option: Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus

The Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus is a good candidate for households already committed to Yale or looking for an Apple Home/Home Key full replacement. The broader Assure Lock 2 family is sold in multiple configurations, so do not treat every Assure Lock 2 as a Plus model.

Yale’s Matter documentation is valuable because it shows the practical limits of the label. Matter operation can require a compatible Thread border router, and functions such as activity feeds and entry-code management vary by Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. The ecosystem you select can therefore change what the lock can do after installation.

Choose it when: you want Yale hardware and are prepared to match the exact model, hub and smart-home platform.

Think twice when: you expect Matter to provide the same controls in every app or want to avoid checking hub requirements.

Best discreet design: Level Lock Pro

The Level Lock Pro is the design-forward option. Forbes selected it as an overall pick after weeks of team testing, highlighting its conventional appearance, multiple unlock methods and relatively discreet hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes Level’s value proposition different from a keypad-heavy lock: much of the hardware is concealed, so the door can continue to look like a conventional entry door. The trade-off is that buyers must pay close attention to which access methods and connectivity features are present on the exact configuration.

Do not interpret a discreet exterior as proof that the lock will fit every door or that it is universally more secure. Confirm the installation dimensions, deadbolt operation, platform support and fallback entry method before choosing it.

Best for renters and preserved keys: August Wi-Fi Smart Lock

The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is an interior retrofit. It can preserve the exterior deadbolt and existing key, which is a major advantage when a landlord, homeowner association or historic-door installation makes exterior hardware changes undesirable.

Tom’s Guide identifies Bluetooth, Wi-Fi through an add-on bridge, geolocation or proximity access, keys, and compatibility with Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings. Access codes require an add-on keypad. The bridge and keypad should therefore be treated as configuration-dependent accessories rather than universal in-box features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

August is a particularly sensible design when the outside cylinder works well and the project is mainly about remotely turning the inside thumb-turn. It is less suitable if you want a new exterior keypad or fingerprint reader integrated into the deadbolt.

Choose it when: retaining existing keys and minimizing exterior changes matter more than having every access method built into one assembly.

Think twice when: you want a self-contained keypad, fingerprint access or a Matter-over-Thread installation.

Best fingerprint-focused choices: Eufy and Aqara

Fingerprint entry is useful for people who dislike carrying keys, remembering codes or opening a phone app. Eufy Smart Lock Touch and Wi-Fi S230 are relevant biometric options; consumer testing coverage describes fingerprint access, access logs, auto-unlock and voice-control features.

Philips WiFi Keypad Deadbolt with Handle, Built-in WiFi, APP Remote Control
  • Connect to 2.4GHz WiFi, No Hub Needed:Connect your Philips 4200 Series Wifi Door Lock Deadbolt directly to your home WiFi network—no extra hub or bridge required. Manage your door anytime, anywhere through your smartphone. 𝙉𝙊𝙏𝙀: Please keep the smart lock within 33 ft (10 m) of your Wi-Fi router. Minimize obstacles such as walls, metal objects, and interference sources for a stronger connection.
  • App Control with Real-Time Access:Control smart lock remotely via the Philips Home Access App: lock/unlock, manage user codes/fingerprints, check your door lock status, and monitor access history in real time, etc, whether you’re at work or on vacation.
  • Voice Assistant Compatible:Hands full? No problem. Use voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant to lock or check the status of your front door lock set effortlessly.
  • Versatile Passcode Options: This Keypad deadbolt supports permanent, one-time, periodic, and recurring PIN codes—perfect for family, guests, housekeepers, or Airbnb use. Easily manage and share access through the app for ultimate convenience and control.
  • 0.3S Fingerprint Fast Access:With this fingerprint keyless entry door lock, unlock your door in 0.3 seconds with fast, secure biometric access. Store multiple fingerprints for family and trusted visitors.

Aqara also offers fingerprint access, particularly in the U400 feature set. Compare the exact model rather than assuming that the U100, U200 and U400 share the same reader, radio or smart-home behavior.

Biometric convenience is not the same as a security guarantee. Ask where templates and access logs are stored, how users are removed, whether remote management requires an account and what happens when the battery is depleted. Keep a mechanical key or another documented fallback available unless the specific model provides a reliable alternative.

Best camera-equipped lock: Eufy Video Smart Lock S330

The Eufy Video Smart Lock S330 combines a smart lock with a front-door camera. That can be useful when the goal is not only controlled entry but also a view of visitors and deliveries.

A camera changes the buying decision. The unit may be physically larger than an ordinary deadbolt, needs a suitable field of view and creates separate privacy questions for household members, visitors and neighbors. Review recording, storage and cloud settings before installation, and consider whether a camera is genuinely needed. If the objective is simply keyless entry, an ordinary Eufy or Aqara biometric lock is a less complicated category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best international retrofit comparison: Nuki Smart Lock Ultra

Android Central’s year-long use report describes the Nuki Smart Lock Ultra as a strong retrofit product with built-in Wi-Fi, end-to-end encryption, auto-unlock and night mode. Those features make it relevant to an international comparison of retrofit designs.

Its market context matters. Availability, cylinder compatibility, regional support and app features can vary, particularly for United States buyers. Confirm U.S. availability and the exact door-cylinder requirements before importing it. It should not be presented as a universally available alternative to August.

Smart-lock compatibility: the questions that prevent expensive mistakes

1. Is the door compatible?

Check the manufacturer’s specifications for:

  • Deadbolt type and whether the product is a complete replacement or an interior retrofit.
  • Backset and door-thickness range.
  • Existing cylinder, thumb-turn and keyway requirements.
  • Strike-plate position and clearance.
  • Available bore and edge dimensions.

These measurements are not optional. If the door is warped, the hinges have sagged or the strike is misaligned, the deadbolt may bind. A motorized lock has less tolerance for a mechanically difficult door because its motor must move the bolt without the leverage a person normally applies.

2. What is the fallback if the battery or network fails?

Compare the actual emergency options for the model:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Mechanical keyway.
  • One-time or recurring code.
  • Fingerprint or NFC credential.
  • External emergency power, such as USB-C, if provided.
  • Physical interior thumb-turn.

Do not assume that a keypad means a lock has external emergency power, or that a rechargeable model has the same backup procedure as a disposable-battery model. Read the exact installation and emergency-entry instructions before fitting the lock.

3. What does the connection actually mean?

Connection What it generally does What to verify
Bluetooth Short-range phone or local-device control Whether remote access needs a bridge or hub.
Wi-Fi Direct internet connection for app-based remote control on supported models Whether Wi-Fi is built in, how the lock handles outages and whether a proprietary account is required.
Zigbee or Z-Wave Hub-based smart-home connectivity Which hub, frequency region and lock functions are supported.
Matter-over-Wi-Fi Matter control over a home Wi-Fi network Supported ecosystems and model-specific feature limitations.
Matter-over-Thread Matter control over a low-power Thread mesh Whether a compatible Thread border router is required and which platform supplies it.

A product listing that says Matter compatible is not enough. Yale’s ecosystem chart is a useful example of why platform-specific feature checks matter. Code creation, activity history, remote control and automation behavior may differ between Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings.

4. Which entry method will the household really use?

Keypads are convenient for guests, children, cleaners and tradespeople because a code can be changed without issuing another physical key. Fingerprint readers reduce code entry. Home Key and NFC can simplify phone-based access. UWB can enable hands-free proximity behavior. Mechanical keys remain valuable as a fallback.

Geofencing and auto-unlock deserve special caution. They can be convenient, but they depend on phone permissions, location behavior and household routines. Confirm exactly how the model handles an arriving user, a second household member and an accidentally left phone before relying on them as the primary entry method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. What remote access and account setup are required?

Remote locking and unlocking may require a proprietary cloud account, Wi-Fi connection, bridge, smart-home hub or Thread border router. A Bluetooth-only lock may work well locally but offer no remote control without additional hardware.

Ask four questions before purchase:

  1. Can the lock be controlled when nobody is physically near the door?
  2. Does remote access require the manufacturer’s account?
  3. Can another household member manage codes without sharing the owner’s login?
  4. What functionality remains if the internet or cloud service is unavailable?

Installation guidance for a construction-minded buyer

Before removing the old lock

  1. Test the existing door. Close it and turn the thumb-turn or key. The bolt should extend and retract smoothly without pushing, pulling or lifting the door.
  2. Inspect the strike. Look for rubbing, loose screws, split wood or a strike opening that is too small or poorly positioned.
  3. Measure the hardware. Record the deadbolt type, backset, door thickness and cylinder arrangement using the prospective lock’s installation guide.
  4. Decide whether the outside hardware must remain. If the answer is yes, eliminate full replacement models that cannot retain the existing cylinder.
  5. Confirm the network plan. For Wi-Fi locks, check signal strength at the door. For Matter-over-Thread locks, identify the compatible Thread border router before buying.

During installation

Keep the bolt and strike aligned while tightening screws. Over-tightening can distort the lock body or make the motor work harder. After installation, test the lock with the door open first, then closed, and finally from the inside and outside using every intended entry method.

Do not configure auto-lock or auto-unlock until manual operation is reliable. If the lock makes repeated motor noises, stalls, reports a jam or requires pressure on the door, correct the mechanical problem rather than repeatedly recalibrating the app.

When to call a professional

If the door binds, the frame is damaged, the strike needs relocation, the deadbolt bore is nonstandard or the lock must be integrated into a complex access-control system, professional smart-lock installation is sensible. Search for a qualified smart-lock installation provider or locksmith who can work on the door hardware as well as the electronics. No app can correct a sagging door or a weak frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and privacy: evaluate the whole system

A smart lock has both physical and digital attack surfaces. Avoid absolute claims such as unhackable, safest or most secure. Instead, evaluate the specific model and installation.

  • Physical hardware: Examine the deadbolt, cylinder, strike attachment and frame condition. A strong lock on a weak or poorly attached strike is still a weak installation.
  • Credentials: Use unique codes for different people where possible, remove old users promptly and avoid predictable codes.
  • Accounts: Use a unique password and multifactor authentication if the manufacturer supports it. Limit who can administer the lock.
  • Logs: Check whether access history is available, how long it is retained and whether it is visible only in the manufacturer’s app or also in the chosen smart-home platform.
  • Cloud reliance: Understand which features stop working during an internet, account or service outage.
  • Updates: Confirm how firmware updates are delivered and whether the lock remains supported by the manufacturer.
  • Cameras: For video locks, review recording, storage, notifications and privacy settings separately from the locking mechanism.

Fingerprint access can be convenient without being the right choice for every household. Consider whether all residents are comfortable using biometrics and whether the product offers a dependable code or key fallback.

Battery, keypad and installation accessories

Accessories can determine whether a smart-lock project works smoothly. Depending on the model, budget for smart-lock batteries, an optional keypad, a Thread border router or hub, replacement strike hardware and basic installation tools.

Never assume that an accessory fits all locks. An August keypad is not interchangeable with a Schlage keypad, and a Thread border router must be compatible with the chosen ecosystem. Check the model number before purchasing replacement batteries, bridges, keypads or strike plates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manufacturers’ battery specifications should be reported as specifications, not as a guaranteed result in every house. Wi-Fi configuration, frequent motor operation, cold weather, video functions and auto-unlock behavior can affect maintenance. Set a low-battery notification where the app provides one and keep the documented emergency-entry method available.

How to choose in five minutes

  1. Renting or preserving the outside key? Start with August or another verified retrofit model such as Nuki where available.
  2. Replacing the complete deadbolt? Compare Schlage Encode Plus, Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus, Aqara U400 and Level Lock Pro based on the door and preferred access method.
  3. Already use Apple Home? Check exact Home Key support for Schlage Encode Plus, Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus, Aqara U400, Aqara U100 or U200 and Level products. Do not infer support from the brand alone.
  4. Want Matter-over-Thread? Compare Schlage Sense Pro and Aqara U400, then confirm the Thread border router, UWB behavior and ecosystem-specific features.
  5. Want a fingerprint or camera? Choose between a conventional biometric lock from Eufy or Aqara and a camera-equipped Eufy video lock. Do not accept the extra size and privacy implications of a camera unless you need its monitoring function.

What not to use as a deciding factor

Do not choose solely from a brand name. Schlage, Yale and Aqara each sell multiple models with different radios and feature sets.

Do not treat Matter as a guarantee of identical controls. Thread-border-router requirements and ecosystem differences remain significant.

Do not treat a review’s battery life or installation time as your own test result. Manufacturer specifications and third-party observations should remain clearly separated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not select the cheapest current listing without checking the SKU. Smart-lock prices, stock and regional availability change, and similar product names can conceal major differences.

Do not rank a lock as universally safest or most reliable. Physical installation, account security, credential management and software support all affect the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a hub for a Matter smart lock?

Often, yes—especially for Matter-over-Thread models. A compatible Thread border router or smart-home hub may be required. Matter-over-Wi-Fi has different requirements, and supported features can still vary between Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. Check the exact model’s setup documentation.

Which smart lock is best for a renter?

An interior retrofit such as the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is usually the most relevant starting point because it can preserve the exterior deadbolt and existing key. Confirm that the interior thumb-turn and deadbolt dimensions match the retrofit kit, and remember that August’s bridge and keypad may be optional accessories.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Are fingerprint smart locks safer than keypad locks?

Fingerprint readers are another convenient credential, not a universal security ranking. Compare how the model handles failed reads, user removal, access logs, battery failure and mechanical fallback. A well-managed keypad code and a properly installed lock can be more practical than a biometric feature that household members cannot use reliably.

What should I do if a smart lock jams during installation?

Disable auto-lock, open the door and test the bolt manually. Check door alignment, strike position, screw tension and the manufacturer’s fit requirements. Do not repeatedly force the motor. If the door or frame needs repair or the strike must be relocated, use a qualified locksmith or smart-lock installer.

The Bottom Line

The best smart lock is the one that matches the door, the household’s preferred entry method and the smart-home platform already in use. Choose the Schlage Encode Plus for a straightforward full replacement with a keypad and Wi-Fi; look to the Schlage Sense Pro or Aqara U400 for premium Matter-over-Thread and UWB features; choose August for a preserved exterior key; consider Level Lock Pro for discreet hardware; and treat Yale, Eufy, Aqara’s other models and Nuki as exact-model decisions rather than brand-wide recommendations.

Before publication or purchase, recheck the current price, United States availability, exact SKU, firmware-dependent features and hub requirements. Then fix the door alignment before asking the electronics to solve the problem.
